there will only be about 5 eagles in the expansion altogether, and they are all unique. but i remembered something that comes later in the set which will make this card a little more dangerous. so, i will raise the cost and add toil.

ok, i’m trying to get up the next batch of cards, (i’ve been super-busy as of late) and i need your help.

the next part of this expansion expresses the part of the story where eagles carry other people. this could be done in two ways, and i want your input on which is better:

the first is obviously make eagle mounts for other companions. so Gandalf could bear Gwaihir etc...

but, the idea i’ve been working with takes a completely different direction, and, i believe, represents the story better. the way it would work is that some companions would be borne by the eagles. it would enable the eagles to fight skirmishes, and still be the main companions of the fellowship (which is what this expansion is about) and keep the storyline.

so what do you think?

Companions being borne by Eagles sounds interesting. Probably a better idea than Eagle mounts (the last thing we need is Durin flying around on Meneldor, here). I’d like to see how you do it.

I’m not sure how you’d do the second one, so explaining your thoughts would be good. I’ll think about it as well and try and come up with some suggestions.

Ditto SoP, EL, and Thran.

You could perhaps stack your companions on the Eagles. Or swap things around and somehow have the Eagles bear the other companion. Like this:

[?] Great Eagle Gandalf
Companion • Eagle
Strength: ?
Vitality: ?
Resistance: ?
Bearer – Wizard or Hobbit.

You certainly don’t have to use that exact wording (especially since "bearer" is kinda lousy), but I think it would be a concise way of showing that this companion can bear other companions, much as they would bear a possession or condition or any other card. It would require some rules clarification, of course, and probably a method of having them bear in a certain phase (and lasting until, say, the regroup phase), kind of like how followers have an aid cost to transfer them during maneuver. And you’ll notice that this lets you limit it to specific races, so that your Eagle can’t bear, say, an Ent.

I think it could work. *shrug*

Or you could have some sort of ’stacking’ mechanisim.
ie,

"When you play this companion, stack an [culture, race, whatever] companion and all cards borne by him or her here."

Then different bonuses for whatever’s stacked, like "This companion is str +1 for each card stacked here." or "while there are 4 cards stacked here," etc.

Whatever you do, it’ll be interesting to see.
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true.

I was thinking about followers with my brother and we came up with a similar thought process to DI’s, of allies with a sort of ’aid cost’ so that they were characters, but didn’t do anything unless they were borne by companions. You could certainly do something similar giving the Eagles texts like: ’Add a threat to make this card borne by a Gandalf companion. Bearer is strength +2’ etc. And they could just as easily be companions as allies.

ok, here is the basic idea i was thinking:

if a companion is borne by an eagle, that companion: (unless otherwise stated) cannot bear cards, cannot participate in skirmishes, and does not add to the number of companions you can spot. usually (i think Gandalf is the only exception) the strength of the companion being carried, is subtracted from the eagle’s strength. when an eagle is about to die, the companion is detached, and placed in the fellowship as a normal companion, able to participate in skirmishes and bear cards.

of course i’m still open to suggestions, i’m still working on the first batch of cards.

could you de ride them without the eagle dying? right now it seems downright worthless...I would have to see the cards though.
