Each time a Shadow card is about to exert a companion, you may exert a Hobbit instead.
Maneuver: Exert a Hobbit (or spot Bilbo) to reveal a card from your draw deck and take it into hand. Discard this condition.
“‘Gandalf spoke true, as usual. A pretty fine burglar you make, it seems, when the time comes.’”
I liked the orignal version, to be honest. It makes Hobbits versatile with any Shadow culture (and much more sinister with the forest-loving culture). In my opinion, it should also be a stealth condition. |

interesting, you can make it 2-7 since there are no skirmishes on site 1

how about the top or bottom card?
My question: should I put a stealth keyword on this one?

Dáin’s DC Duos #60
Numero sesenta! Ay, caramba!
To understand the following cards, I think we need a refresher in capturing and rescuing.
Capturing is a new concept in my sets, in which captured characters are placed in your support area. Captured characters cannot be used by their owner, and the player who captured them can get some benefits from them via other cards. They can only become "un-captured" when their owner rescues them somehow. Basically rescuing (and capturing) works much the same way as site liberation (and control). That’s probably the easiest way of putting it.
Players who capture an opponent’s characters can do all manner of nasty things. They can spot them to add (or remove, if you’re a FP player with captured minions) twilight, threats, and burdens. They can have characters and other cards with text that triggers off captured characters (like "while you can spot a captured character in your support area, this minion is fierce"). They can exert or wound them, giving them a slow or quick death while you watch, helpless to do anything about it. And of course, while one of your unique characters is captured, you can’t play another version in their place, so it’s the equivalent of them being in the dead pile...without you potentially being able to get to them in the dead pile. Yuck.
The one exception? Because it would obviously break the game, you can’t capture the Ring-bearer, much like you can’t discard the Ring-bearer. Sorry, but it ain’t THAT easy, Shadow players. However, you CAN try and capture the bulk of his fellowship, or at least a couple key characters in it. Likewise, FP players can try and capture some of the nastier minions out there and keep them from causing trouble. Heck, capture the Witch-King or Sauron and laugh at they stew in your support area.
Today’s cards focus on the other side of things...rescuing. To put them in better perspective, I’m going to give a sneak peak of a couple other cultures and their capturing cards. This bonus brought to you by the number sixty. Enjoy!
Angry Spider
Minion • Spider
Strength: 4
Vitality: 5
Site: 7
Enduring. Fierce.
To play, spot a wounded Spider.
When you play this minion, you may exert it once for each captured character in your support area.
“‘I’ll soon put an end to that....’”
Fine Eating
Event • Shadow
Play a Spider and remove (X) to wound a captured character in your support area X times.
“‘Kill’em, I say. Kill ’em now and hang ’em dead for a while.’”
Since captured characters go in your support area, you can do lots of stuff to them. If you want to just kill them off, though, cards like this are good way to do it.
Spoils
Event • Response
If you capture any number of Free Peoples characters, exert your Orc to take any possessions on those characters into your hand.
“...and there were all the baggages and packages lying broken open, and being rummaged by goblins, and smelt by goblins, and fingered by goblins, and quarreled over by goblins.”
Normally a character keeps everything on him when he’s captured: wounds, conditions, possessions...whatever. Not so with this card.
To Rule Them All
Event • Maneuver
Toil 1.
To play, spot 3 Orcs, 2 minions, or Sauron.
Add or a threat for each site you control, companion or ally you have captured, and exhausted companion you can spot.
“‘One by one, the free lands of Middle-Earth fell to the power of the Ring....’”
Those are all pretty powerful, huh? There are several minions in those cultures and others that can pretty easily capture companions and allies, so it’s not going to be all that unlikely to have at least one or two characters in threat of being snatched from you.
Fortunately, you can fight back. Bilbo is one of the best ways.
NOW here comes the Duo.
Barrels Out of Bond
Event • Fellowship
Stealth.
Spot a Hobbit and exert X companions at a river to rescue X captured characters.
“‘For some time Bilbo sat and thought about this water-gate, and wondered if it could be used for the escape of his friends, and at last he had the desperate beginnings of a plan.’”
A Mad Idea
Event • Maneuver
Stealth. To play, spot a Hobbit and a companion of another race.
Add a threat and make the Ring-bearer put on The One Ring until the regroup phase to rescue every wounded companion in an opponent’s support area.
“‘We thought you had got some sensible notion, when you managed to get hold of the keys.’”
Each of these can outshine the other in the right situation. Barrels Out of Bond can grab as many captured character as the number of exertions you’re willing to dish out, so if your remaining fellowship is pretty healthy, you should be able to get all your captured characters back, or at least close to it. A Mad Idea only rescues companions (not allies this time), and only works if they’re wounded. That may seem like a deterrant, but keep this in mind: most minions only capture characters when they win skirmishes or otherwise wound them--plus cards like Fine Eating mean they may be wounded even AFTER they’re captured--so chances are that won’t be a problem. If you can live with the risk of voluntarily putting on the Ring (a "mad idea" ) and add just one little threat, you can save all the exertions of Barrels Out of Bond and still come out with lots of rescuing.
Whew! That was long. Hopefully you kept up and didn’t get bored.
EDIT: Some tweaks made after reviews. |

How on earth are you going to keep track of which cards are yours and which are your opponents? Great for gameplay, but how do you keep track of which cards are yours and which aren’t? LotR Online is good for this, but not the real game. Kinda like menace and triumph.

Actually, see a couple of the Lakemen. Minions capture in similar ways...during and after skirmishes. Makes sense, right? They also have a few possessions and other cards that can do it. We’ll get to them soon enough.

TOO powerful, though? Putting on the Ring IS awfully risky, as you yourself noted after reviewing Inside Information a couple days ago.
As for exerting captured companions, the short answer is no. You cannot do anything to YOUR companions that a Shadow player has captured...they’re as good as dead to you until you get them back. Shadow players MAY be able to exert YOUR caputured companions, however, but only if a card explicitly allows it (like how Fine Eating allows you to wound companions you’ve captured).
I editted in one more card while you were reviewing, by the way. Just in case you missed it.
Thanks for the review! I’m in a generous mood...so here’s a for the fast review. |
