If you can’t vote for yourself, you had might as well say that you shouldn’t vote for anyone i your group. Otherwise, you’re rewarding people for not voting.

Alright, this is gonna take a while, so bear with me. I want to do this as fairly as possible. Don’t worry...I’m summarize my choices at the end.
Matchup 1
Not a huge fan of either of these. They both have some good things, but some not-so-good things that drag them down a bit.
SoP’s version is good, but a little overpowered in my opinion. The skirmish text is fine, and I understand exactly what the damage +1 part is about...fierce minions would love having this Saruman around. But the twilight reduction PLUS that nice skirmish ability seems a bit much.
AP’s version confuses me. I don’t know why I’d ever use him. For one thing, his site inexplicably jumps from the usual 4 to 5. And both of his abilities, while nice, can only be used once since they both discard Saruman. Without a couple serious support cards to get him back (which, unfortunately, the contest doesn’t include), he’s pretty weak...and I have to be fair and judge it as if those support cards don’t exist. If it had some kind of text on the card to get it back from the discard pile, this one might get my vote.
But it doesn’t, so I have to go with A here.
Matchup 3
Man, I don’t even have to look at the cards to know this one’s going to be tough. A class between two legends. Let’s get started!
Heh, both lurkers. Both culture. Great minds and all that.
I LOVE the idea behind Menace’s version. The wearing of The One Ring is perfect. Doing cool stuff when burdens are added: neato. And I like the lore, too.
I think the first ability is awesome. With a weaker second ability, this card would get my vote in a flash. But unfortunately, the second ability throws it out of whack. Getting a minion back ANY time a burden is added for just one exertion? Way, way too good. Still a cool card, though, so let’s see what AC’s got.
Yes, an old-old-school Saruman, with the archery and skirmish text and all! I know that doesn’t leave much time for other text, but the ability you DO have is great. Everything is old-school until now, and now you bring him up-to-date with resistance text. And this is good text, too. This is a good card.
They’re BOTH good cards, but somebody has to win and somebody has to lose. Sorry, Menace, but AC and card B wins here.
Matchup 5
A follower, eh EL? Interesting. Same initial cost and strength bonus as the other Saruman follower from Decipher. Now the differences: it’s more culture-specific, which is not a bad thing at all as and make perfect sense; the putting on of The One Ring is really neat and can be much better than the exertion the other Saruman follower does; the aid cost is higher, which helps offset everything. I’m still coming around to followers, but I’d use this one. Take that as a compliment.
Celebrimbor’s version is hurt just a tiny bit by lacking Minion • Wizard, but not too bad. Having a lower site number than all other versions hurts it a little more. But on to the actual text. It’s pure Hobbit hate, and specifically unbound Hobbits. It’s balanced, and if I had this card available to me, I’d consider using it.
But again, somebody has to win here, and while Cele’s card is okay, I like EL’s better. A gets my vote here.
Matchup 6
Corvus’ version has some nifty stuff. The fierce-adding text isn’t likely to trigger very often, but that’s okay since it’s such a powerful ability. Good balance. The response action ties in with it beautifully. I like cards that force you to make a difficult decision like this.
KingMike...er, Turin ( ) makes a good case too. The old-school archery/skirmish text makes my heart glad. The ability that goes with it is quite nice, too. Good balance here as well.
Hmmm...this is my toughest choice yet. But as much as I like your card, Turin, I think Corvus’ card is just a little more fun, even though it lacks the cultural enforcement. So I’m going with A here.
Matchup 7
I like the artifact hate of your card, Thonnas. I what his skirmish ability does, though I think it might be better with just two exertions or one threat or something. Seems a little extreme. Still, not bad at all. A rare fighting Saruman, without being a fighting Saruman. Good stuff.
culture? Companion? This should be fun. Not sure why you dropped his vitality, unless it was to keep his maneuver ability in check. However, I think his cost probably should have dropped to as well. Still, this is a good way of doing a FP Saruman. The resistance thing is a very nice touch, and his maneuver ability is pretty cool. A tiny bit overpowered, perhaps, but not too badly.
This one’s as tough as the last matchup. You both did a good job and should be commended. But I have to pick one, and I think that has to be A.
Whew! For those of you still awake , my picks are:
1A
3B
5A
6A
7A
Good job by all. Be proud of such neat cards. |

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!
Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North! |
