I’m not THAT hard, I just stress the most important points because this is your very FIRST challenge, meaning, I don’t want you to repeat the same mistakes from now on. Make the same mistake again and you’ll see what "hard" means... |

I’d like to formally apologize to the Contestants, but there will be a delay on card-grading from today until the end of this week. Problem is I’m having a cycli of lectures at College I must attend to, ranging from 9:00 to 22:00, and I also have MTG tournaments on friday AND saturday, so I sincerely apologize, but until sunday, gradings will be delayed. |

Ok, cycle of lectures is over, so I’m resuming the Contest again, I’ll start grading the next one right away, hopefully, it’ll be posted here shortly. I thank you all for your patience, and again apologize for not keeping up with the schedule I’ve proposed myself... |

Good. The wait is over!
Hey Felipe, I posted this so you don’t have to keep double-posting. |

Ok, next one up for the massacr... ahem, for the grading is thonnas7. As he submited 2 companions, I simply cut the last one out.
•Bilbo Baggins, Lord of Bag-End
Ally • Home 1F and 3F • Hobbit
Strength: 2
Vitality: 3
Fellowship: Exert Bilbo and add to take a tale into hand from your discard pile.
Rare +
Card Title: 8
Rarity: 10
Twilight Cost: 10
Stats: 10
Abilities: 10
Creativity: 6
Spelling and other Issues: 7
Consistence: 9
Overall: 8,75
I had only issues with this card’s title, since Bilbo Baggins is not an acceptable title anymore, they’re all named just Bilbo to avoid confusion. Also, I think this one is TOO close to the FotR Bilbo, so that lost some creativity points. The rarity was a BIG upside, after all, it’s a nice catch to put an out-of-context ally as a R+, since it’s an out-of-contest set after all!
•Gandalf’s Staff, Device of Magic
Artifact • Staff
Vitality: +1
Skirmish: Exert Gandalf to reveal a card at random from an opponent’s hand. Make a minion strength -X until the end of the turn, where X is the twilight cost of the card revealed.
Rare
Card Title: 10
Rarity: 10
Twilight Cost: 10

Abilities: 9
Creativity: 7
Spelling and other Issues: 7
Consistence: 8
Overall: 8,88
Almost no complaints about this one, however, letting you lower the strength of ANY minion with the cost of only ONE exertion MAY be too powerful. Yes, it’s random, but you’d still get to do it "for free", just having the staff out, not having to use an event, thus unclogging your hand. Too much upsides for almost no downside is not always good. However, I COULD see this card being printed as it is.
Riddermark Rider
Companion • Man
Strength: 7
Vitality: 3
While this companion is in your starting fellowship, his twilight cost is -1.
Regroup: Exert this companion to place a event from your discard pile on the bottom of your draw deck.
Starter

Rarity: 10
Twilight Cost: 10
Stats: 7
Abilities: 8
Creativity: 10
Spelling and other Issues: 8
Consistence: 9
Overall: 8,63
This guy is nice, but the stats are too high for a starting 2-cost companion that’s not even unique. Also, the name is a bit off,it should have something to do with horses and being mounted, it would have been nicer.
•Fires of Isengard
Condition • Support Area
The twilight cost of each possession is -1.
Common
Card Title: 10
Rarity: 10
Twilight Cost: 9
Abilities: 10
Creativity: 10
Spelling and other Issues: 10
Consistence: 10

What can I say? I love the touch that, since you’re at the very fires of Isengard, weapons get built faster, so they’re cheaper. An almost perfect card. A spotting requirement COULD’ve been used, as common cards tend to enforce that.
Alliance of Old
Event • Maneuver
Exert 3 Elves to prevent a Man from taking wounds or exerting until the end of the turn.
Starter
Card Title: 10
Rarity: 10
Twilight Cost: 10
Abilities: 7
Creativity: 9
Spelling and other Issues: 6
Consistence: 6

I liked the cultural enforcement on this one, but it’s just a SO bad card... I mean, it’s absurdly underpowered, doesn’t do anything exciting and has one steep cost! I could see some uses if it went the other way around, as you’d get to exert Wraiths, and such, but I simply didn’t like it where it is.
•Deagol, Destined Discoverer
Follower
Vitality: +1
Aid - Add 2 burdens.
Response: If a companion is about to take a wound, exert bearer and add (2) to prevent that wound.

Such a cool card! Too bad, I think this one deserved a flavor text... But, I mean, making a Premium follower? Sweet!
•Ulaire Cantea, One of the Nine
Minion • Nazgul
Strength: 10
Vitality: 3
Site Number: 3
Fierce.
Skirmish: Remove a threat to make Ulaire Cantea strength +1.
Regroup: Remove a burden to add a threat.

By far, thonnas7’s worst card, worse even than that horrible event. I know Cantea usually costs , but this one is just too underpowered to cost that much, unless it was a common/uncommon. But it’s a RARE+! It should be a good and cool card, not just an amalgam of little abilities that don’t even add up to make a powerful minion. I like where you were going, just think you swerved out of the road halfway there.
Bow of Osgiliath
Possession • Ranged Weapon
Strength: +1
Maneuver: Exert bearer to wound a roaming minion with a twilight cost of 4 or lower.
Common

Rarity: 10
Twilight Cost: 10
Stats: 10

Check it all, everyone, the example of a perfect common! Not powerful, not underpowered, plain, simple, and good! Not to mention, falling in PERFECTLY with strategy! Thonnas7’s best card, and one of the best ones so far!
•The One Ring, Weapon of the Enemy
Strength: +2
While wearing the One Ring, each time the Ring-bearer is about to take a wound, add a burden instead.
Maneuver: Add a burden to wear the One Ring until the Regroup phase.
Rare
As it was brought to my attention, this Ring is an exact copy of The One Ring, Such a Weight to Carry. Because of that, I’m cutting this card out, and thonnas7’s grade for it will be changed to 0.
Shelob’s Lair [Site]
Mountain. Shelob’s twilight cost is -4.

Card Title: 10
Rarity: 10
Twilight Cost: 10
Abilities: 10
Creativity: 9
Spelling and other Issues: 8
Consistence: 10
Overall: 9,57
Very cool card! Loses some points on creativity, but HAD to be done, thus, do not lose much. However, being it such an important site, it SHOULD pack a Shelob-related flavor text.
FINAL GRADE: 8,136
Thonnas7 has the skills (as you can see, I only had to make very minor corrections), he’s just too "chained" to the old concepts of the game. Don’t be afraid to try something new, because unless you do, you won’t get anywhere, and will eventually be trumped over.
Now, go work on your pledge (remember, guys, ONE pledge for ONE grade, and NOT an "overall" one!)! I’ll get to the next Contestant’s submission right away! |

Thonnas7 is, hereby, given a WARNING for submiting existing cards. That’s the first one. Two warnings for the same reason, or 3 "general" warnings, and you’re out. However, he still gets a gp, since his grade’s still above 7. |

No problem. Next one up is AnxiousChieftain, who didn’t make a Ring. So, his grade for it will be 0 (I was actually surprised he’d forget a Ring and remember an Ally...).
•Rory Brandybuck, Master of Buckland
Ally • Home 1 • Hobbit
Strength: 1
Vitality: 2
Maneuver: Exert Rory Brandybuck and discard a tale from play or from hand to remove a burden.

I was worried to see such an opener from a Contestant I hold in high regard as AC. The title is ok on itself, but, how Rory helped Frodo bear the burden of The Ring? He didn’t even know it existed! Flavor text doesn’t link too well, either, but it IS a nice piece of text, thus the higher grade. Creativily speaking, the card goes nowhere, I mean, "Hey, it’s hobbit dealing with burdens, and staying out of fights. Hooray." Nothing new here. I liked how he tried to balance the card by limiting its use, but that does not make it a common. Simplicity and straightforwardness do, and this card is nowhere near simple. It’s an ally which works on any set; it has too many drawbacks; it’s unique; it deals with strict terms like Tales and such. Not that a common card can’t do that, but it shouldn’t do it all at once. Let’s hope things improve from here.

Bearer must be a Dwarf.
For each wound on bearer, he is strength +1 and damage +1.

Very cool card. I’m impressed specially by the flavor text, since it "kindly" reminds us that D didn’t make all the Rings they should have. I just didn’t like the creative side, again, since the Ring pretty much follows a pattern. I know it’s part of a cycle, and that’s why it doesn’t lose too many points, but the cycle was never finished, so that doesn’t mean you can’t bend the rules a bit. I also had some problems with the damage part. It just seems TOO overpowered, either on a regular beater or an ARB.
Ithilien Scout

Ring-bound. Ranger.
Each time this companion wins a skirmish involving a roaming minion, you may play the fellowship’s next site.

No issues witht his card. I liked the idea very much, as you don’t usually put pressure on your opponent like that, it’s nice to have a psychological factor on the game, making your opponent SURE that, unless he backs up his minions, swarming you with less-than-enough for the kill is just helping you out. Also, it SLOWLY introduces some of the game’s aspects, which’s great for a new player. However, I think AC missed on the rarity by an inch or two, as this would have made for a FANTASTIC "build around me" Starter card, to show off Ring-bound Rangers and the power of knowing the Adventure Path ahead and planning accordingly.
Safe Haven

No real issues on this card, I just question the rarity, it should’ve been a common in my book, nothing fancy enought to up it to uncommon level. Also, I’m bugged if this card would ever see any play, it’s just TOO limited, it could’ve been applied to any site or at least been able to be activated by any elf. Loved the Response idea.
Double Vigilance

If a companion is played, reveal a Uruk-hai from your hand to exert that companion twice.

Didn’t like the flavor text, I don’t think it keys well to the card. Also, one minor issue on formatting: If it’s a Shadow card, then you’re on your Shadow phase, thus, ANY companion played WILL be being played by the Free Peoples Player, too redundant.
•Barliman Butterbur, Fat Landlord
Follower
Vitality: +1
Aid - Discard 3 cards from hand.
At the start of the regroup phase, if Barliman Butterbur is attached to a companion or a companion and you cannot spot any minions, you may transfer Barliman Butterbur to your support area to place one of your cards that is removed from the game beneath your draw deck.

Minor issues with formatting, but that’s it. VERY creative card breaking all the rules (from twilight cost, to aid cost, to game rules themselves) that’s still quite playable and balanced. Just missed a hand-written flavor text on this one...
Berserk Destroyer
Minion • Uruk-hai
Strength: 12
Vitality: 3

Damage +1.
Berserk Destroyer is strength +1 for each wound on each character in its skirmish.

I LOVED how the flavor text implied that they were advancing slowly over time. However, berserkers shouldn’t do this. They’re not deemed for this kind of job, they’re offensive minions, not defensive ones. This ability seems more like it should belong to Orcs, if any, or to Saruman himself. Also, I think that such a powerful and "remarking" minion should be unique. Last, but CERTAINLY not least, the last ability should include HEALING him, otherwise, it’s a POWERFUL ability with a pitful cost of one measly token.
Easterling Axe
Possession • Hand Weapon

Bearer must be an Easterling.
While you have initiative, bearer is damage +1.
While you can spot 6 companions, bearer is damage +1.

I didn’t like that the axe itself mentions ambush in its game text, and doens’t give Ambush to bearer. Also, it’s limited to only Easterlings, and the damage abilities are ALSO kind of limited, so it could cost only , it would’ve been no problem.

Nice enough site, but it could’ve been a common, the site’s simple enough for that. Also, loses one point in creativity, for copying the old "add/remove a burden/threat" game text, but removing threats like this, plain and simple, had to be done sometime, thus losing only ONE point.
FINAL GRADE: 8,502
Overall, I was "confused"by AC’s submission, almost as he had done it on two very different times, he was VERY creative on some points, and incredibly repetitive on others. However, his submissions are very solid, and very well written, only room for improving creativity here. For instance, I hoped to see him use some of the keywords he created himself, but that never happened. Actually, it didn’t happen in ANY submission so far, which IS kind of disappointing, when you give away such freedom for the Contestants to create as they please. As expected, AC qualifies for the gp for this challenge, all that’s left is working on his pledge, probably on one of my flavor text grades. |
