I am joining a Nine Companions Tournament soon and I was hoping for some advice on how to go about constructing my deck. For those of you who don’t know, a Nine Companions Deck is when you must include one or more copies of each of the original Nine companions and you are not allowed to discard any of them. So basically, as soon as you draw a companion, you play him. Thankfully, the tournament director is eliminating all of the cards that play off of the number of companions and races. Please help!

I think a wounding deck would do good here. Use Shadowplay + Unheeded with the hobbits, Hand Axes on Gimli (oh, does this tournament use standard x- and r- lists?) any archer legolas + double shot, aragorn with Aragorn’s Bow, Ranger’s Longbow (nine companions, lots of threat room!) and maybe Gandalf, Powerful Guide. Then (again if it doesn’t rotate out the first two blocks) throw in Blade of Gondor for Boromir.

Just my first random thoughts. If it does use the standard rotations, I’m sure you could still make it work.

yes, it uses the normal X and R lists, but thanks for the advice. But i think ill just use the original aragorns bow seeing as how it is much better, and still legal in this tournament

Anybody? So far I’m thinkin that I’ll run a three hunters deck and just play the additional companions when i draw them, but just use them entirely as pincushions. The only key companions would be Gimli, Eager Hunter, Legolas, Of the Woodland Realm, Aragorn, Thorongil, and Gandalf, Leader of the Company. Thoughts? Comments? Ideas?

Yeah, that sounds cool. Maybe you should have some unbound hobbit discarding action a la Towers Block? And include Sam, Great Elf Warrior for something of a skirmishing guy (Strength 6 without possessions, so not a weak hobbit...)

I’ll have to think about Boromir...Boromir, Son of Denethor is an excellent choice for a 9 companions deck.

And don’t forget On Your Doorstep, for recycling.

Maybe use Aragorn, Swift Hunter instead of Aragorn, Thorongil? I know it sounds crazy, but it’s an awesome combination with Focus and Legolas.

Focus + Forth The Three Hunters! is better. Still one Aragorn exertion, but -3 for the minion instead of +1 for you!

Dauntless Hunter + Aragorn Wingfoot + Gimli Lockbearer and a few good
hobbits. I dunno.

Yeah, it is. But why not keep Swift Hunter just in case you don’t get your FTTH in time?

Good combo, except that Dauntless Hunter is X-listed because so many unbound Hobbits got released. And when you look at it, if it’s a Nine Companions deck, you can only get a 2-boost (unless I misunderstand the format), because only Merry and Pip are playable.

yes, your correct, in this format the only unbound hobbits playable are merry and pippin. So far I have decided to use Merry, Loyal Companion, Pippin, Hobbit of Some Intelligence (simply another cheap and disposable companion) Sam, Proper Poet (I can use him to soak up a couple beefy minions when necessary, and Boromir, Lord of Gondor (with his sword, he is almost impossible to overwhelm) Thoughts?

That sounds very good to me. Able to handle swarms, big minions, and damage+1 Uruk-Hai.
