Today’s new Free Peoples card isn’t one I expected to see in Rise of Saruman, and it doesn’t look too useful either. Both abilities are extremely minor; this new Barliman Butterbur is basically just an overcosted Hobbit. Laughing

he does seem horrible, though with a pallando and alatar attached he could reach a respectable 8.

Spammers really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know about their ways in a month. And yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you. Razz

could be good in a gandalf run.

He’s awesome with the Gandalf RB. I mean, Gandalf men are pretty weak, but start him with Brand and he’s strength 5 right off. Then with tons of followers, Alatar, Radagast, Pallando, Gwaihir, etc., and Barliman is strength 9, tougher then Aragorn. Plus all the followers pump him up more. With all followers attached, Bariliman is strength 11, each minion is strength -1 and doesn’t get bonuses from possessions, and then there is Gwaihir’s text if you attach it to Gandalf instead...

On top of that, Strange meeting and For a while less dark give him some pretty nice pumps, and get the cards flowing better (on tops of his ability), which is critical with a Gandalf RB deck. Plus, discoveries prevents his manuever ability from discarding to many cards.

Decent card. I would definitely start him with Brand and Gandalf RB. Now if they can get some Gandalf men possessions...

He’s not that strong, and I don’t think his strength bonus will help much. I like his maneuver ability though, especially with cards like On Your Doorstep.

On Your Doorstep...definitely a good combo! It’s almost like Gandalf telepathy!

I must admit, this is a disappointing card. But he is a decent companion, especially compared to most Gandalf men. I betcha we’ll see more Gandalf followers in this set, and that will make him worthwhile.

Alright, this guy, is great. Except for the fact that he gets a decent strength bonus for each follower attached, he also sets up non-elf telepathy even better. That can only mean a better set-up for the shadow side of the deck.
