Rangers, the way to build/play/and use in your local games.
--- end description ---

Most people think Rangers are annoying, that they exhaust themselves to death from their exertions, and are just there to wound minions, but rangers are not like that!! In this article, I will explain how most ranger decks work, and are built. I will show some example decks, show how they work, and explain each card individually, and how it adjoins to the deck type. For further explanation, I will have a section on how to build an excellent ranger deck for your personal preference.
What exactly is a Ranger Deck/Build? This may be a dumb question, but rangers have many different styles of winning, and moving to site 9 without being cremated. Of all these deck types, I will go through and explain the wounding strategy, skirmish power strategy, and the wound prevention strategy.

First of all, let us look at a Wounding Strategy:

Ranger Wounding
The strategy of this build is to wound and exhaust most minions in your path to site nine. Using Key Cards such as madril, faramir’s aide, and hardy garrison to kill minions; this is one Fellowship side to mess with.

Ringbearer and Ring:
boromir, bearer of council
the one ring, the ring of rings
Starting Fellowship:
faramir, captain of gondor
aragorn, strider
gondorian prowler
madril, faramir’s aide
Free Peoples:
the saga of elendil
hardy garrison x3
sapling of the white tree x3
arrows thick in the air x3
gondorian blade x3
war and valor x3
ancient roads x3
might of numenor x2
much needed rest x2
houses of healing
boromir, my brother
ranger’s bow x3
aragorn’s bow
stewards’ legacy x2

Strategy:
Bid around 0-1, and play as many Free Peoples cards as possible to set up quickly. As soon as you obtain hardy garrison, play it as quickly as you can, and utilize gondorian blade/war and valor to win skirmishes as needed. Stewards’ legacy aides in wounding minions, and the rest are pretty explanatory.
The Reason behind Cards:
All right, if you are the type of guy that loves details, and figuring out how ideas work, here is an explanation of every card in this deck, that serves an important purpose. Otherwise, skip through this and go to the Matchups.
Ringbearer and Ring:
boromir, bearer of council: A decent Ringbearer, that is ideal for arrows thick in the air, and stewards’ legacy to dice and eat the minions raw. He can also discard annoying minions when winning a skirmish(like gollum, dark as darkness, etc.). If you happen to compete against a lot of filthy Morgul Orc wounding that targets the Ringbearer, he might not be as helpful.
the one ring, the ring of rings: A fairly nice ring, it gives him more resistance, and can prevent archery wounds in the archery phase that would prevent main Gondor Gondor companions that would have gone out of the door (get that pun?).
Starting Fellowship:
faramir, captain of gondor: One of the main fighters of this deck, who is usually 11 strength at the most, and can punch some damage. He also is able to bear ranger’s bow, and he goes well with arrows thick in the air.
aragorn, strider: An 8 strength guy that is pretty hard to beat, and when combined with aragorn’s bow, he is one deadly sniper. (he is also free, which is cool so that you can start out with your whole fellowship)
gondorian prowler: Another "free" guy in the Starting Fellowship that is there mainly to affect a minion’s site number so they can be roaming. Also, he can be your "fodder" companion, just in case someone important is about to die.
madril, faramir’s aide: Aha! The deadly minion slicer with his special ability to wound roaming minions, and when combined with hardy garrison, he is one crazy dude! (Note: He is also a great card cycler in case of a bad hand)
Free Peoples cards:
the saga of elendil: Cool card for Faramir when bearing ranger’s bow, or boromir, to skirmish more minions and have more vitality, or even Aragorn, to snipe off more sneering faces at you.
hardy garrison x3 The heart of the deck. Lose initiative, and wound more minions! Like I stated before, it is great when combined with madril, faramir’s aide. Sometimes, you even lose initiative when playing a Gondor skirmish event, or such.
sapling of the white tree x3 A very sweet card which helps tremendously against Ninja Gollum, or Fierce Nazgûl. It also can prevent wounds the Boromir, Bearer of Council at the start of his skirmish.
arrows thick in the air x3 Yep, this card is cool when combined with stewards’ legacy, it kills most exhausted roaming minions in the Archery/Skirmish phase. (Note: You have to exert Boromir and Faramir in order to use this card. Morgul Orcs that exert the Ringbearer are very hard to play against, so keep an eye out for them)
gondorian blade x3 A basic ranger sword that helps in strength boost and Damage. You can replace it with ithilien blade, but I decided I enjoyed the Damage boost better than a strength boost.
war and valor x3 A strength boost in order to win skirmishes, and sometimes kill minions in that skirmish (exert Faramir bearing gondorian sword, with ranger’s bow, then play war and valor to kill a 4 vitality minion)
ancient roads x3 Since this deck mostly relies on roaming minions, this is a must have. (Note: You have to spot 3 rangers in order to use this card’s text efficiently. If a couple rangers die, than this card is useless)
might of numenor x2 An emergency sort of card. It helps if you are wounded up, and decide to advance to site 9, you can heal your rangers during the maneuver phase to withstand the onslaught of minions.
much needed rest x2 One reason not to bid so high. This particular card heals all Gondor men who have resistance 5 or more. It really helps against beat-down builds.
houses of healing Not the best healing card, but in case of emergencies, it can blow out the twilight pool in order to remove a few wounds from your rangers. It also can be used in the gondorian prowler game text instead of exerting your companions.
boromir, my brother A perfect way to make more minions frustrated at you. When combined with ranger’s bow, he is one powerhouse. Also, you can lose initiative while using its game text.
ranger’s bow x3 An important card for Faramir and Boromir alike. Put it on Faramir, and have stewards’ legacy out, goodbye special abilities. It also helps in wounding more minions in order to chop them off.
aragorn’s bow Such a sweet card! Exhaust a minion or two, and watch Faramir dice them with ranger’s bow.
stewards’ legacy x2 Again, play this as soon as possible. It is so much fun to see the Shadow player become angry because they can not use skirmish special abilities or Boromir exerts crazily, and all there minions go bye-bye.

Matchups:
Now here are the matchups that will be easy to cream, or die from. Pay attention to these when you are in a tournament!

Roaming Sauron Uruk-hai: I have not played against to much of these fellas, but there minions are usually roaming, so it may be easy to kill, or it may be easy for them to kill you! In order to win against this type of deck, you have to play it correctly.
Forest Nazgûl: Nasty Men in Black hurt the rangers so bad, I don’t know how to explain it. They basically discard all of your conditions, and beat you to a pulp. You probably can win with your shadow side, the cool thing is, you can set up your shadow side very quickly with Madril.
Morc Wounding(Targeting the Ringbearer): When playing against these ugly Orcs, try to get sapling out as soon as possible, or much needed rest to heal your rangers over and over again from all of the exertions. Believe me, when playing against these morcs, you usually will not die until site 5-7 because of the saplings, much needed rest, and houses of healing. Just hope your shadow will be able to kill your opponent!
Corrupting Builds: Against corrupting builds, since your rangers don’t have any condition removal, be extremely careful on how you play against them.
Uruk-hai Culture: Again, devastating if they have wound prevention.
Swarm: Swarm is usually pretty easy against 1 vitality minions, but if you are very worried about swarm in your local tournament, you probably could take out saga of elendil and put in i will go. Also aragorn’s bow deals with swarm very well, so I do not think it is a problem.
Playing it right:
In order to play this certain build correctly, everything has to be timed right. For example: Let’s say you played your Free Peoples cards, and then are going to move to the next site. Now in the skirmish phase, you should ask yourself "Can I kill all minions in this skirmish, or should I wait for the next site to wound the minions up?" Generally, with wounding builds, this is one key question to ask yourself, in order to survive if you do move again.

All right, here is the next ranger build dealing with skirmish power. How can rangers really skirmish?

Ranger Skirmish Power/Site Manipulation

Here is a deck that focuses on winning most skirmishes, the Noble Rangers (Faramir, Boromir, Aragorn, Denethor) and great site manipulation for the fellowship side. Here’s the deck list:

Ringbearer and Ring:
boromir, bearer of council
the one ring, the ring of rings

Starting Fellowship:
Faramir, Captain of Gondor
Aragorn, Strider
Denethor, Lord of Minas Tirith

Free Peoples:(35 cards)
ranger of westernesse x3
gondorian blade x2
sapling of the white tree x3
scroll of isildur
ranger’s bow
invigorated x3
hard choice
well-traveled
pledge of loyalty x4
pathfinder x4
aragorn’s bow
war and valor x3
duilin, ranger from blackroot vale
heirs of gondor x2
faramir’s sword

Strategy:
Bid around 1-2, and double move to site 3 in order to use Denethor’s text respectively. Make Aragorn big with gondorian blade, and aragorn’s bow. When at site 3, exert Denethor to play Duilin, and then exert him to play hard choice, to do it over again. The main cards you want to play out with Denethor at site 3 is:

Duilin, ranger from blackroot vale
hard choice
faramir’s sword
aragorn’s bow

(Note: LOTR rules say that you can only draw or take into hand up to 4 cards during the Fellowship phase. [The rule of 4])

Scroll of isildur boosts up Boromir’s resistance, and the heirs of gondor/war and valor/pledge of loyalty all help in winning skirmish. The ranger of westernesse serves as a site manipulator, and fodder for the opponent when you are in a pickle. Aragorn’s bow adds to the archery, and has the ability to exhaust a minion that Faramir can kill with ranger’s bow. Concealment, the perfect card against enduring Nazgûl, prevents ulaire enquea, thrall of the one from adding burdens, which just makes this deck harder to beat. (Note: If you are very worried about your opponent using special abilities, take out pathfinder x2, and heirs of gondor x1, and put concealment in its place.)

The Reason Behind Cards:
(Like I stated before, if you are the type of guy who loves details, skip through this section and start at the Matchups)

Ringbearer and Ring:
boromir, bearer of council A very neat Ringbearer, who can discard minions each time he wins skirmishes, so this brings out one of the strategies.
the one ring, the ring of rings In my opinion, this Ring is the best so far, partly because of its resistance boost, and Archery prevention.

Starting Fellowship:
Faramir, Captain of Gondor The basic faramir in which most people have in their ranger deck, because of the strength boost when skirmishing a minion, and the ability to start out with extra necessary companion.
Aragorn, Strider A "free" guy who serves in the purpose of aragorn’s bow, and wins most skirmishes.
Denethor, Lord of Minas Tirith One of the main Gondor companions you want to include. He can pull any specific card at sites 3 and 6. He really aides you in starting up fast.

Free Peoples:(35 cards)
ranger of westernesse x2 Mainly used as an extra companion, he plays the next site for you, and can be used as a "fodder" companion.
madril, ranger of ithilienA must have for every Site manipulation deck, and he also can be a "fodder" companion.
gondorian blade x2 Another strength boost which helps in winning skirmishes. Don’t put ithilien blade in its spot! ithilien blade has a purpose in other decks but not this one, because the only roaming minions you can spot, are skirmishing Faramir.(That’s because of faramir’s sword)
sapling of the white tree x3 A wound prevention card that drives LOTR players insane.
scroll of isildur When combined with sapling of the white tree, the scroll of isildur can boost Boromir’s resistance, which is a must when playing against many corruption strategies.
ranger’s bow Goes on Faramir. If you have faramir’s bow, put that in the ranger’s bow place.
invigorated x3 Ahhh! Heals the companions you have exerted. Of course, the only roaming minions you can spot are during Faramir’s skirmish, so make sure you discard it during Faramir’s skirmish.
hard choice Heals companions.
well-traveled Plays the next 2 sites if in region 1.
pledge of loyalty x4 Basic strength boost. Most of your rangers will be resistance 4 or more, so an easy way to win skirmishes.
pathfinder x4 Plays the next sites which aide in the text of faramir’s sword, duilin, ranger from blackroot vale.
aragorn’s bow Like Farmir’s bow, except you can snipe a few minions.
war and valor x3 Another strength boost, when played in Farmir’s skirmish, you can kill a 3 vitality minion.
duilin, ranger from blackroot vale Basically in there for his strength +3 bonus if at a river or site, and plus, he is a ranger to.
heirs of gondor x2 In case of an emergency, and you do not have many skirmish events in hand, use this card to win a few skirmishes.
faramir’s sword Makes minions roaming, which helps tremendously.

Matchups:
Finally, here is the matchups for Ranger Skirmish Power.

Roaming Sauron: Easy as cake. Most of the minions will be vitality 2, really easy to win against.
Forest Nazgûl: Probably pretty easy to cream, I have not played against these very much, but they do seem easy in the fact that they rely around their sites.
Beadowns: Beatdowns are really easy to beat down (get that pun?) in the fact that I have invigorated in my hand, and about 3 fodder companions if needed.
Corrupting Builds: Now this is the deck’s weakness. Since most Gondor cultures do not obtain condition discarding cards, this is going to be hard. Plus, the Gondor cultures doesn’t even have burden removal!
Archery Builds: Like I stated before, you have at least 3 fodder companions, and so archery decks might have a harder time killing you than most ranger decks. invigorated has a huge help verses these builds.
Playing it right:
Since this build relies mostly around skirmish events, and winning skirmishes, try not to discard your skirmish events when reconciling or use them up to quickly. This is why I recommend a fast cycling Shadow side to keep up with the slowness of the Free Peoples. Anyway, basic principles are:
1.Don’t idly use the skirmish events up quickly.
2.Try not to discard the needed skirmish events when reconciling unless you are in a pickle.
3.When using the "fodder" companions, don’t purposely kill them because you hate them, only let them commit suicide when you really need it.

Now for the next Ranger Deck!

Ranger Wound Prevention:
If you are tired of your rangers dying from beatdown, this is a pretty wonderful deck to use if your local tournament has developed many beatdown strategies.

Ringbearer and Ring:
frodo, weary from the journey
the one ring, the ring of doom
Starting Fellowship:
faramir, captain of gondor
aragorn, strider
halbarad, ranger of the north
Free Peoples:
gondor will see it done x2
sapling of the white tree x4
invigorated x4
hard choice
armor x3
much-needed rest x3
pledge of loyalty x4
tireless x3
gondorian blade x3
sting, bane of the eight legs
athelas x2
faramir’s sword

Strategy:
Bid around 0-1 burdens, and play as many Free Peoples cards as possible in the Fellowship phase to set up quickly. Do not bid more than 1 burden! If you do, halbarad, ranger of the north will not be able to start in your Starting Fellowship. (If you would like to bid more, put in the one ring, the ring of rings instead of the one ring, the ring of doom, but that kinda removes the strategy) Usually your shadow will start first, so that you will be using your sites throughout the game. Win skirmishes with pledge of loyalty/tireless, and heal them companions crazily. This really drives Shadow Players insane!

The Reason Behind Cards:
Sorry for saying this a 3rd time, but if you’re are not a detailed person, or don’t like details, skip to the Matchups section.
Ringbearer and Ring:
frodo, weary from the journey: Very important card if playing since there is only 4 companions in this deck. This halfling can become very strong with the one ring, the ring of doom, and sting bane of the eight legs. A must for choke decks.
the one ring, the ring of doom: A super strength bonus when skirmishing for the Ringbearer, in which many LOTR players do not use Hunter minions. Plus, it allows Frodo to be an awesome pincushion.
Starting Fellowship:
Faramir, captain of gondor: A useful Faramir to start with two other companions, and he becomes stronger when skirmishing roaming minions.
aragorn, strider: Another ranger to defend the Ringbearer, and win skirmishes. Additionally, he can be another pincushion.
halbarad, ranger of the north: The perfect ranger for Wound-Prevention strategies with his ability to heal Gondor companions in the maneuver phase. Quite a nice little wound remover!
Free Peoples:
gondor will see it done: Not a very important card, but, if one of your exhausted Gondor companions is about to take a wound, not bad.
sapling of the white tree: Another wound-prevention mechanism which helps tremendously with this strategy.
invigorated: A perfect way to heal more wounds off of your companions, and if you can spot a roaming minion with faramir’s sword, you can heal 2 Gondor men.
hard choice: A little wound remover for Faramir.
armor: Now this card is superb! Bearer can not take more than one wound per skirmish phase, that really helps against Damage +1 minions, red wrath, and many other cards that wound him more than once per skirmish phase. A must have for wound-prevention builds.
much-needed rest: Another wound healer.
pledge of loyalty: This card is in here to win more skirmishes, and prevent the wounds from coming to you (if you are about to lose a skirmish, you can prevent a wound when winning that skirmish)
tireless: A skirmish strength bonus, also it clears your hand out while saving it when needed.
gondorian blade: Makes your companions +2 strength, and gives your Gondor rangers a Damage +1 bonus.
sting, bane of the eight legs: A strength bonus for the compassionate halfling (Frodo). It also has the ability to discard a fierce minion during that fierce skirmish.
athelas: Use this card to either discard annoying conditions, of heal a companion. I just stick it in to remove conditions.

Matchups:
All right here are the matchups for the Wound-Prevention Strategy!
Roaming Sauron: Oooooooh! These gruesome red-eyed brains will be easy to slaughter. Since this deck only has 4 companions, and Frodo is a fighter also, these guys won’t stand a chance.
Forest Nazgûl: Well, the Nazgûl will discard your tireless, and play many lost in the woods on your companions. It may be harder to beat, but you do have many healing/wound-prevention strategies, and some condition discarding with athelas.
Corrupting Builds: Stay totally away from these builds of decks. Corruption is totally your weakness, since the Gondor culture has no burden removal. Of course you do have 10 resistance, yet most of your cards have to do with resistance.
Uruk-hai Culture: Super, totally easy! All you have to do is play armor, and you are set.
Ninja Gollum: Easy again. If the Ninja Gollum is a corrupting build it will be very hard to beat, but otherwise, very easy.
Morgul Orcs: fabulously easy still. Since they rely on exertions, just heal them off.

Playing it right:
When playing a wound-prevention build, try to set up as quickly as possible with your Fellowship side. This deck is a lot easier to play because of the general idea of wound-prevention, and you basically play all you can, except do not prevent wounds just because you want to. Let some of the rangers gain some wounds then remove them, or wait until you really need the wound-prevention abilities. I have done this before, and it really pays off waiting for the right moment.

How to Design an Excellent Ranger deck
When designing a Ranger deck to play, be careful to choose which strategy you enjoy best (wounding, skirmishing, wound prevention). Once you choose the strategy that appeals to you, start designing on these steps:

1. Choose your companions first. They are the backbone of your deck, but do not forget about the main strategy you have chosen.
2. Second, choose your possessions that will aide in the help of your rangers, or companions, and will go along with the strategy (you wouldn’t want to put in gondorian blade when you want to win more skirmishes with ithilien blade).
3. Thirdly, choose your allies if you want any to help your fellowship.
4. Fourthly, choose your events and conditions which are important in all ranger builds.
5. Fifthly, cut your deck down to the size of the deck you desire for (like for instance, if you made a Free Peoples Side with 37 cards, and wanted it to cut it to 33 cards, take out the least important cards in your deck)
6. Play test your deck against someone, and ask for ideas on how to improve your deck.
7. Take out the cards that you hardly ever get in your hands, or that do not do any benefit for your deck, and replace them with some other more important card.
8. Have fun!

Ranger Basics
Depending on the Ranger style of deck you are creating, each has its own particular need for the build. For example: A wounding build generally uses aragorn’s bow, and pippin, wearer of black and silver, and it may be a great idea to splash those in, or not, all depending on your preference. But, every wounding Ranger deck will need faramir, captain of gondor (unless you do have a different Faramir strategy you like better). All the same goes for the different builds. A skirmish power build needs skirmish events/companions that make minions strength minus whatever, like Anarion. Just keep in mind, whatever build you do happen to play at a local tournament, be sure to play it right.

Thanks for reading guys! I know this article was a bit long and continuous, but I hoped you learned something, and I hope you will use the Deck-Designing ideas the next time you build or design a deck.

Thanks!

Deck 1

Replace Ranger’s Bow with Faramir’s Bow

Also noticed that your match-up section was basically a tale of woe. This guy, you die, this guy, you die, etc. Your swarm match-up is overrated, swarms will wall easily with Arrows thick in the air.

Deck 2

Use Ranger’s Sword instead of Gondorian Blade for Aragorn. Much better. Or Ranger’s Sword, Blade of Aragorn, my personal favorite. These are my people could really help against possession discarding as well.

Your lame beatdown pun drops the article rating by 5 points Wink

Anyway, decent article, it could use a little more work, but decent. I’m between 3 and 4.

i thought it was pretty funny that you had Roaming Sauron as a match-up. I havent played a deck like that for a loooooooong time.

It was a good article, but there are a few things preventing it from a 5, so right now were going for a 4. I’ll wait to vote

Maybe you should have a section about an Arwen ranger deck. and a ring-bound ranger deck. ring-bound rangers have no problem with corruption, because of frodo, tired traveller.

also, when posting many decks, it is not necessary to post the reasoning behind each card. this type of article gives an overview. good job on putting a match-up section with each deck. this is very important with an overview article, because match-ups show the general strengths and weaknessess of each deck.

so my advice is, take out most of the card-by-card analysis, and just use an in-depth strategy section for each deck. then add more varyations on ranger decks. (ring-bound rangers and Arwen ranger are two solid, and unique types.)

Yeah, and Aragorn/Arwen build with Arwen’s Fate / The Choice of Luthien

Also, you need to mention that prancing pony.

And....the biggest ranger deck of them all... Ithilien Blade!!!!!

Can’t believe you didn’t mention that...

Before I rate, I noticed that the deck (and the listed matchups) are generally pretty old. Roaming Sauron is never played anymore, and most of the cards in the actual deck you listed are very old or are going to be rotated (or both). Try revising with some newer strategy and matchups and I will review in detail.

Also, try matching it up with a newer NG. It might not do so well.

This was interesting, but the read was kind of hard to get through. I do like rangers, though (sort of). Anyway, you did a good job overall.
