Has anyone ever actually built a full fellowship to match that of the book? I have been trying to find a way to make it work so you start with the 4 Hobbits and then add Boromir, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf. I know the deck would be ridiculous but has anyone done/seen it? |

You could make it work with cards like G for Grand or Trust Me As You Once Did and cards like Servant of the Secret Fire. The main problem would be anti-6 cards and anti-rainbow cards, but you could maybe use something like Terrible and Evil or Slaked Thirsts to counter them.

Any suggestions for which versions of the Nine companions you would use?
I think Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk would seem logical |

I had a Trust Me As You Once Did Gandy signet deck with everyone from the original fellowship.
Frodo, Tired Traveller
Gandalf, The Grey Wizard
Legolas, Elven Comrade
Gimli, Unbidden Guest
Sam, Proper Poet
Aragorn, Driven by Need
Merry, Rohirrim Squire
Pippin, Sworn to Service
Boromir, Son of Denethor. Not Gandalf signet, but he’s pretty useful
A Talent for Not Being seen is a good card (somewhat, x-listed, however) and it can actually choke somewhat. Abuse Gandalf, and use Strength of Spirit and Aragorn’s Bow. Habits of Home and Bill The Pony are also good cards for the deck. And then Traveled Leader to control the site path. Run Forests and Dwellings and any twilight thrown out gets removed, and the site number is 0. So basically, one twilight for each companion and the region penalty. Anything that gets played off that twilight, survives Legolas and Aragorn’s Archery, gets whupped. |

NOTE: NB’s idea was posted while I was writing this. Yes, it took me a while. I kept coming back to it.
Nah, I agree with Jord, mm. Friend of the Shirefolk would probably be best. Or perhaps The Grey Wizard.
There are several options for an "original" fellowship. You could go with something like this:
Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk
Frodo, Son of Drogo
Sam, Great Elf Warrior
Aragorn, Driven By Need
Legolas, Elven Comrade
Gimli, Unbidden Guest
Merry, Rohirrim Squire
Pippin, Sworn to Service
Boromir, Defender of Minas Tirith
Then I’d stuff it with as many copies of Trust Me as You Once Did, Gandalf’s Wisdom, Keep Your Forked Tongue, and Let Us Not Tarry as I could. As I mentioned, Gandalf, The Grey Wizard wouldn’t be a bad option either, and would really reduce twilight. Sam is pretty decent with his +4 strength, and Frodo is easily kept going by Gandalf (as long as you stick with Friend of the Shirefolk). Legolas and Gimli help each other out. Boromir, ironically, makes up for any ranger bonuses you’d be missing by using this version of Aragorn. Merry, Pippin, and Aragorn have a wonderful threat strategy going on to become reliable fighters; the synergy is so good I’m surprised it hasn’t been X-listed. Merry adds the threats, Pippin and Aragorn use them, then Aragorn gets rid of them in the regroup phase. Awesome.
The major problem with this deck is healing, especially for Gandalf. So alternatively, one could go with a deck focused around the Aragorn signet and use massive healing as you go.
Gandalf, The Grey Pilgrim
Frodo, Hope of Free Peoples
Sam, Needer of Vittles
Aragorn, King in Exile
Legolas, Son of Thranduil
Gimli, Lockbearer
Merry, Impatient Hobbit
Pippin, Wearer of Black and Silver
Boromir, Lord of Gondor
Another Gandalf option would be Gandalf, Leader of Men to get him in the mix early. The key here is obviously Aragorn with his healing ability, as this entire fellowship qualifies. Hard Choice is awesome with this, too, healing any companion in this fellowship twice for only twilight. At His Command, No Mere Ranger, and Voice of Rauros make for very nice pumps. These Are My People is a somewhat expensive but VERY effective way to keep everyone equipped with nice gear.
But perhaps the best all-around is a fellowship built mainly around the Frodo signet, but using a piece of the Aragorn/Merry/Pippin combo above.
Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk
Frodo, Son of Drogo
Sam, Great Elf Warrior
Aragorn, Driven By Need
Legolas, Greenleaf
Gimli, Unbidden Guest
Merry, Rohirrim Squire
Pippin, Sworn to Service
Boromir, Son of Denethor
A key card here would be Frodo’s Pipe. Give Gandalf, Aragorn, and Gimli their own pipes, give The Gaffer’s Pipe to one of your other Hobbits, throw in some pipeweeds and you’ve got a fellowship that can heal, remove twilight, work with threats and get rid of them when they need to, AND remove burdens. You’ve got a couple great fighters in Gandalf and Aragorn, and virtually everyone else but Frodo can chip in effectively too. You really don’t even need any other support cards, but if you want, Straining Towards Us, No Use That Way, and Mind Your Own Affairs work out well in this fellowship, as do the Gandalf signet cards mentioned up above.
Other companion options: you COULD use Aragorn, Elessar Telcontar, but then you’d lose a big piece of the combo Driven By Need has with the Hobbits. Sam, Resolute Halfling would make a very good choice as a strict Frodo-healer, essentially allowing you to either exert a Frodo signet companion OR discard a card from hand to heal Frodo. Between that and Gandalf’s Pipe, it’s going to be very hard to kill OR corrupt your Ring-bearer.
The big risk here is that there’s little in the way of condition removal. You’ve got burdens, threats, and wounds pretty well covered, but Shadow conditions and certain events could be big trouble. Still, I think you should be able to survive long enough, even if you lose a couple companions along the way. This fellowship could make it even if a couple of their members didn’t, I think.
Whew. I should have made this an article. |

How did your deck survive against cards like Shotgun Enquea, NB? |

Beautiful! Good idea.
So despite all the dangers, a rainbow fellowship CAN work in the modern LOTR TCG world, eh? |
