I have had The Hobbit in Word format for many months, which is one reason my Lasting Alliances DC set is so far ahead of my other sets. I own all the books, including The Similarion, and Unfinished Tales. But it’s SO much easier to work from a copy you can search through and copy-n-paste from.

A few months ago, I found a PDF version of The Fellowship of the Ring, and copy-n-pasted that into a Word document. It didn’t copy perfectly (silly things like "c" in place of "e" sometimes and stuff like that), but it was good enough for my purposes.

Now, just this evening, I found all three LOTR books downloadable in PDF, Word, or text format. I am jumping for joy and just had to share with someone who understood how cool that is. Very Happy

Where’d you find them? I’ve been wanting those things for a while (to the point that I’ve *almost* gone for it and typed them all myself).

Actually, at 62 chapters, we could break it up into a forum effort - getting 62 people to each put up a chapter might be a bit difficult, though. But it would make it much easier to convert between the different releases.

Yeah, it looks like it’s on the up and up, but you never know for sure, I suppose.

I don’t want to break the law here, I just really wanted a digital copy.

Google logs your IP if you search for anything containing the word illegal and the feds investigate. Wink

I don’t think it would be a problem since LotR is in the public domain. Public domain means that anyone can reprint it and disseminate it at will. I’d have to check and see if it is in the public domain, and if so, he can host it on fileshack or something like that and post a link.

EDIT: The U.S. has a life + 70 year policy meaning that the book enters the public domain 70 years after the death of the author. In other words, you can post it on the web in 2043.
