Is there a particular advantage/disadvantage to using non-Hobbit Ring-bound companions, like the rangers in the Towers block?
I know there’s some specific cards that can hurt them, especially in the and cultures, and some cards that can help them in the , , and cultures, but I’m rather surprised that so few have ever appeared (outside of certain Hobbits, of course). You’d think that certain Fellowship members would have had a Ring-bound version or two, and at least that certain rangers (like Faramir) would have kept it past the Towers block. Is there a particular reason Decipher seemed to abandon it? Were they deemed too powerful or something? |

They didn’t abandon it. They abandoned Ring-Bound Rangers, that’s it. And yes, that was because they were two powerful. I think Smeagol, Sam, Frodo, and Bilbo are the only Ring-Bound companions standard legal, since TT rotated with Hunters. |

I know. I suppose I should have included Smeagol and not said it was just Ring-bound Hobbits, but my point remains the same. Other than those four, the idea seemed to be a flash in the pan and then POOF, it was gone.
So what made them so powerful? Cards like Arrows Thick in the Air, Forests of Ithilien, and Ranger’s Bow? |

Um...yeah. What are They to kill tanks, Mablung and Arrows thick in the air to kill tanks, and Arrows thick in the air to kill swarms.
But...I think it may be that when Rangers came back (hunters), making them ring-bound would break the deck by comboing them with old cards. I’m not completely sure, but I know that Ring-Bound Rangers were VERY powerful in TT. |

They were fun, too... an aspect of play Decipher has apparently forgotten about. |

Indeed. I’ve actually been working on a ring-bound Ranger deck...it’s awesome stuff.
Anyhow, using ring-bound companions means that you can avoid a few shadow cards, like Over the Isen. Oh, and Haradrim Marksman becomes unplayable. |

I’m guessing that they dropped the Ring-bound rangers with ROTK since technically they weren’t traveling along with the Ring anymore. And then they probably decided that it would work best to keep it that way, for some reason or another.
By the way, if you’re looking for a way to trash a Ring-bound deck, use Chasm’s Edge x4.

Yeah, see, that’s the thing. I would think there would be plenty of counters to it, enough to counterbalance their power. Yes? No? Maybe so? |

I think the only ring-bound companions should be those who were offered the ring, held it, or had a chance to take it( a 1 step or at max 2 step chance) |

Agreed, SoP.
For that reason, I was thinking of MAYBE giving some of the original Fellowship members a Ring-bound DC version and building a little strategy around it. And I’d like a handful of other Ring-bound companions, like some TTT rangers. |
