Okay, yeah. Don’t call it blasphemy, but I"m starting Naruto DC’s.
*cringes* Don’t hurt me!
But okay. For those of you still reading this, I’m not going to go through a cardlist and make cards, making you guess how to put them together. I’m going to be making entire DC decks, focusing on the relationships between characters.
Okay, I know that some people that will be reviewing this don’t have a single clue what naruto is. I’ll do my best to give an overview. Alright. The story of Naruto centers around a boy, Naruto Uzumaki. Wait, back up a second. The story takes place in a land, separated into different regions. Each region has its own army, made up of ninjas. Each region also has a hidden village, where these ninjas live. Okay. So our story begins in the Hidden Leaf Village, called Konoha. A nine-tailed demon fox has been terrorizing the country. The leader of the village, the Fourth Hokage (Hokage is the title given to the leader of the village), does battle with the creature, and sacrifices himself to remove the creature’s spirit. Now, he needed somewhere to put this spirit, so he sealed it within the body of a newborn child… you guessed it, our hero, Naruto Uzumaki.
Okay, so the rest of the story begins many years later, when Naruto is a bit older, around 14. He’s been trying for a long time to get into the Ninja Academy in the village, and has repeatedly failed. But this year, it seems, is going to be his lucky year…
And there you go; a brief background. I’ll explain more as we need it.
Right now, the cultures stand at this:
[Konoha]
[Sound]
[Sand]
[Mist]
[Akatsuki]
Notice that Konoha will be the only fellowship culture. However, cards will relate more to unloaded keywords and characters’ names than actual cultures in the fellowship sides.
Also, in these DC’s, possessions are very rare and barely relied on. Companions and minions mainly rely on conditions for thier strength, and there are many conditions that play on/transfer to minions and companions. Also, there is a new kind of condition, epic conditions. The keyword Epic means that the condition cannot be discarded.
So, here’s the first fellowship side I felt like creating.
Jyuuken! The Hyuga Clan!
Now, here’s some background for you: The Hyuga clan is the oldest, most respected, and (debatably) most powerful family in the ninja village of Konoha. This is because of their secret family techniques. One of these techniques is even in their own bodies: The Byakugan Eyes. These eyes allow the user to see the opponents’ flow of chakra (energy) and use their own energy to stop it, sometimes fatally. This also stops the opponent from using their own ninja techniques. The family moves that actually block off the opponent’s energy are called Jyuuken. These Jyuuken techniques begin with a series of two strikes, then four, then eight, and so on, until all 360-odd chakra points of the opponent are blocked off.
However, recently, there has been a lot of strife within the Hyuga family, because of the Branch and Head families. The Head family controls the branch family, and the branch family only exists to protect the head family. In addition, to protect the clan’s secrets, each member of the Branch Family is inflicted with a cursed seal that activates upon their death, destroying the ability to use Byakugan eyes and the memory of the individual. The Head Family can also activate this cursed seal upon living members of the Branch Family, as a form of torture or control.
The heads of the Branch and Head families are currently twin brothers, the leader of the head family born right before the leader of the branch family. So, only seconds separated the brothers, one into a live of grandeur and the other into a live of servitude.
These two brothers also had children. The current heir of the Head Family is Hinata Hyuga, who is weak and incompetent compared to even her younger sister. The heir of the Branch family, Neji Hyuga, however, is the most promising student in the village, possibly the strongest. He is considered a child prodigy and a genius.
A short time before the start of Naruto, there was an incident in which a member of another village was killed by a Hyuga. The other village demanded that the head of the Head family be sent to them to be killed. Instead, the leader of the branch family (the leader of the head family’s twin brother, remember) elected to go, by his own free will. So, young Neji grew up without a father, but also under the impression that the Head family forced his father to die. Neji is also a strong believer in fate; that each person has a destiny, and that people cannot change their position in life or anything about them.
Hinata, on the other hand, has the weight of a legacy on her shoulders, and she is comparatively weak, even her father says so (he says so often, as a matter of fact). She feels incompetent and worthless.
Yeah, a troubled family, to be sure.
In the end, however, Naruto Uzumaki leads Neji and Hinata through their differences to become a happy family once more (well, mostly).
Well, history lesson over, let’s go ahead to the cards! We’ll start with our "Ring-bearer" and "Ring." By the way, GP to anyone who can figure out what I should call the Ring-bearer and ring in this... (for now, I’ll just use Ring-bearer and Ring, you’ll know what I’m talking about).
Byakugan! The Ultimate NPE!
*Hinata, Bearer of Responsibility [Konoha]
Companion * Genin Ninja
Strength: 3
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 5
Byakugan.(Each time this character wins a skirmish, your opponent discards the top card of his/her draw deck).
Hinata is resistance +1 for each other character with Byakugan you can spot.
Response: If another companion with Byakugan wins a skirmish, and Hinata is the Ring-bearer, you may exert her to take a [Konoha] jutsu from your discard pile into hand.
"Naruto-kun... did I change... just a little?"
Okay, so a few new things on this card. I introduce Byakugan, which is what the entire Hyuga part of the [Konoha] culture is going to be about. As you can see, this is going to be a lot like Dwarven NPE.
Now, I also use the term "jutsu". In naruto, a jutsu is a technique used by ninjas, often by expending some amount of their chakra, or energy. In my DC’s, the expensive chakra cost of some jutsu will be put in the card as some sort of downside.
As for the actual term "jutsu" in the DC’s… some events and conditions will gain the unloaded keyword "jutsu". Just like tales, or stealth cards in Lotr. Easy to understand, right?
Probably, the chakra cost of cards will be put like this: "Chakra Cost- Discard three cards." Or something similar.
Anyways, on to the next card
*Honor of a Family
The One Ring (like I said, I need ideas on how to rename...?)
Strength: +2
Bearer must be Hinata or Neji.
While wearing Honor of a Family, each time bearer is about to take a wound, add a burden instead.
Maneuver: Exert bearer to wear Honor of a Family until the regroup phase.
"She is weaker than Hanabi, five years her junior. Do what you like; I have no need for her."
Next, let’s introduce Neji, the Hyuga Prodigy.
*Neji, Hyuga Prodigy [Konoha]
Companion * Chuunin Ninja
Strength: 7
Vitality: 3
Resistance: 6
Byakugan.
Each time Neji wins a skirmish, you may look at the top 2 cards of any player’s draw deck. Replace those cards in any order.
Response: If Neji is about to take a wound, discard a jutsu from hand to prevent that.
"Your fate is decided. People cannot change. You will lose here."
Neji’s first ability shows his belief in fate... and his ability to see it. The second ability shows how self-centered he can be: He takes the cards that others could use and uses them to protect himself.
Now let’s look at the deck’s last starting companion: Hanabi Hyuga. If you’ve been checking out my lore (and history lesson), you know that she’s more powerful than Hinata, even though she’s younger.
*Hanabi, Powerful Child [Konoha]
Companion * Genin Ninja
Strength: 6
Vitality: 3
Resistance: 6
Byakugan.
While you can spot 2 other companions with Byakugan, Hanabi is twilight cost -1.
Skirmish: Exert Hanabi to make another character with Byakugan strength +2.
Hanabi is fairly powerful by herself, but she is an asset to her family and both gains power and gives power when with them.
Now, let’s do our last two companions: The heads of the Branch and Main families.
*Hiashi, Head of the Main Branch [Konoha]
Companion * Jonin Ninja
Strength: 8
Vitality: 3
Resistance: 6
Byakugan.
Each time Hiashi wins a skirmish, you may heal another character with Byakugan.
Regroup: Exert Hiashi to reveal a shadow player’s hand. Discard a revealed shadow card. That shadow player draws a card.
"I will protect Konoha with my life."
The leader of the head family is strong, but a little reckless. Still, he oversees his clan well, and strikes opponents with good power.
*Hizashi, Hyuga Master [Konoha]
Companion * Jonin Ninja
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 6
Byakugan.
At the start of each of your regroup phases, you may exert Hizashi to reveal the top 3 cards of your draw deck. Replace them in any order.
Response: If another companion with Byakugan is about to take a wound, exert Hizashi to prevent that.
"I will go. My brother need not be killed."
Hizashi will gladly give his life for his other clan members or simply help out by giving you a glimpse into the future.
And that’s it for now.... GP for reviews. |

Put it in the Naruto DC forum, please. And save this for LotR.
Just make a note that they’re in LotR format.
Nah. I think it would be easier to explain Naruto to folks who understand LOTR rules than it would be to explain LOTR rules to folks who understand Naruto. I don’t have a problem with it. If it was based on a topic that DIDN’T have a devoted card game elsewhere on the site I doubt anyone would suggest it be taken elsewhere, so I think the coincidence with Naruto can be overlooked.
But that’s just my . We’ll see what others think. In the meantime....
I THINK I understand everything so far. Let’s give this a try....

Hard to fully judge until I see some jutsu cards, but it seems balanced.
So each clan will have one "ring-bearer"?

Nice, simple "ring". Not sure what else to use instead of "ring" and "ring-bearer" right now, but I’ll think about it.

First ability seems a little weak, but it’s still a neat idea. Pretty good card overall.

Cool. Always nice to be able to get a 6/3 companion for only .
No lore here, though?

Interesting regroup ability, especially if reconciling works the same way as with LOTR TCG. I’m tempted to make him only cost , but I think is probably best.

Now THAT first ability is pretty darn good. Response ability is quite nice, too. I think this is the best of the bunch so far. |

Hah, NBarden, if you want to, you can go ahead and tell me this is blasphemy and you want it out of the LotR DC forum, if that’s how you feel. I’ll make sure to ignore it completely.
You see, DC’s for Chronicles of Narnia, Star Wars, and Eragon have been made in the DC forum here without much complaint. I don’t see why this should be any different. You can go ahead and not review the thread if you like, though.
Thanks for the reviews, Dain and SoP. Wow, I never thought SoP would be catching me on spelling errors...
To Dain: Specific ’Clans’ are not the only things I’m going to be focusing decks around.
Just wait and see.
and after I make more "Rings", maybe we can come up with something else to call them.
I’ll try to whip up some lore for Hanabi, but there just isn’t much around.
To SoP: Thanks for the idea on Hizashi. I made the change. |

There’s a thread about Naruto already on the forums so that is the place, even if they are different format.
At the very least post it in the member’s lounge.
Okay, now ignore me.

Like Dain said, it would be easier to explain Naruto to people who know LotR rules than to explain LotR rules to people who know Naruto.
And posting it in the member’s lounge? Here I must protest. Surely you, NBarden, must realize that DC’s are meant for DC forums? It would be sheer anarchy if I put these in the member’s lounge. It would defeat the purpose of forum orgainization. Basically, the world would end.
But like I said, if you don’t like this thread, or consider it ’juvenile’, then simply don’t look at it. I think you can manage that. |

Naruto is its own card game, with its own rules. Same for LotR. These DC’s are in LotR format; they go in the LotR DC forum.
Oh well, NBarden, I’d rather not spam up my own thread arguing with you. If you have a problem with where my thread is, take it up with a moderator who could move it, or someone with enough authority to make me move it.
Now, I’ll say one last time, if you don’t like it, please ignore it. I have a couple of people who will constantly review, so I don’t really care if this isn’t a big hit with the whole community. If you don’t have productive reviews to post, please don’t post here.
On a different note, if you wouldn’t mind, please vote in my DC contest, we have a close race in one of the matchups I’d like to resolve. GP to those who vote.
Now, back to the DC’s...
Here’s the next batch of cards for the Hyuga deck, the Jyuuken jutsu (and maybe a few extras). We already know the Hyuga are going to be NPE (’cuz I said so), and these are the Nobody Tossess a Dwarf of Naruto... but better.
Eight Trigrams Two Palms [Konoha]
Event * Response
Jutsu.
If a companion with Byakugan wins a skirmish, make a shadow player discard the top card of their draw deck.
"Jyuukenhou, Hakke Rokujuu Yonshou!"
Alright, this seems like an extremely weak event, right? Next to useless. But remember: If a character with Byakugan wins a skirmish, your opponent will be discarding a card anyway. This card adds a second.
Also, remember how I said the amount of strikes doubles each time? This card serves as the prerequisite for the other moves, the last of which outshine Nobody Tosses a Dwarf by a landslide. So, let me show you what I’m talking about.
Eight Trigrams Four Palms [Konoha]
Event * Response
Jutsu.
If a character with Byakugan wins a skirmish, remove a card titled "Eight Trigrams Two Palms" from your discard pile from the game to make a shadow player discard the top 2 cards of their draw deck.
"They call it the Divine Punishment. It’s the Hyuga clan’s ultimate move."
See what I mean now? Let’s get on to the next one.
Eight Trigrams Eight Palms [Konoha]
Event * Response
Jutsu.
If a character with Byakugan wins a skirmish, remove a card titled "Eight Trigrams Four Palms" from your discard pile from the game to make a shadow player discard the top 3 cards of their draw deck.
"Eight strikes!"
Okay, now we’re on the level of Nobody Tosses a Dwarf, and it took us a while to get here. But here’s where things get fun.
Eight Trigrams Sixteen Palms [Konoha]
Event * Response
Jutsu.
If a character with Byakugan wins a skirmish, remove a card titled "Eight Trigrams Eight Palms" from your discard pile from the game to make a shadow player discard the top 4 cards of their draw deck.
"That style can shut off all of the opponent’s chakra points, making it impossible for them to use thier jutsu."
Eight Trigrams Thirty-Two Palms [Konoha]
Event * Response
Jutsu.
If a character with Byakugan wins a skirmish, remove a card titled "Eight Trigrams Sixteen Palms" from your discard pile from the game to make a shadow player discard the top 5 cards of their draw deck.
"It’s your destiny to lose. You cannot change that destiny."
Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms [Konoha]
Event * Response
Jutsu.
If a character with Byakugan wins a skirmish, remove a card titled "Eight Trigrams Thirty-Two Palms" from your discard pile from the game to make a shadow player discard the top 6 cards of their draw deck.
"They can see the flow of chakra in your body, and shut it off."
Eight Trigrams One Hundred and Twenty-Eight Palms [Konoha]
Event * Response
Jutsu.
If a character with Byakugan wins a skirmish, remove a card titled "Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms" from your discard pile from the game to make a shadow player discard the top 7 cards of their draw deck.
"Look! You can barely see his hands move!
Okay, so it takes a while to get there, but by the time you do, you’ve sealed off 254 chakra points and made them discard the top 28 cards of their deck. Now, you obviously don’t have room in a deck to have 4 copies of each of these, but we can spare the room for, say, 2 copies of each? Now, we’ll need a way to fetch them in the right order... but that’s what this next card is for.
*Gentle Fist Style [Konoha]
Condition * Support Area
Jutsu. Epic.
To play, exert two characters with Byakugan.
Skirmish: Add a threat and shuffle a card with "Eight Trigrams" in the card title from your hand into your deck to take a card with "Eight Trigrams" in the title from your deck into hand.
Regroup: Discard a jutsu from hand to remove a threat.
"Their stances look the same!" "They are. They both fight using the same style."
This is the backbone of the Hyuga deck, ensuring that (with enough threat removal) you can pull the "Eight Trigrams" card you need. Now, there will be more "Eight Trigrams" cards (mainly having to do with wound prevention), but this card is primarily made to fetch your ’Palms’ cards when you need them.
Now: about the story of the card. The Hyuga clan’s fighting style is called "Gentle Fist" because they never strike with a closed fist, always with an open palm. But this style is anything but gentle; each attack closes off a chakra point on contact.
Now, here’s a few generic cards we just have to have.
Kunai [Konoha]
Possession * Hand Weapon
Strength: +2
Bearer must be a Ninja.
Ninjas mostly fight with their fists, but sometimes they need an extra... edge.
Rapid Blows [Konoha]
Event * Skirmish
Make a companion with Byakugan strength +2 (or +3 if that companion has resistance 4 or more). |

Okay, so it takes a while to get there, but by the time you do, you’ve sealed off 254 chakra points and made them discard the top 28 cards of their deck. whay are chakra points?
*Gentle Fist Style [Konoha]
Condition * Support Area
Jutsu. Epic.
To play, exert two characters with Byakugan.
Skirmish: Add a threat and shuffle a card with "Eight Trigrams" in the card title into your deck to take a card with "Eight Trigrams" in the title from your deck into hand.
Regroup: Discard a jutsu from hand to remove a threat.
"Their stances look the same!" "They are. They both fight using the same style."
from your hand into your deck you mean?
Now: about the story of the card. The Hyuga clan’s fighting style is called "Gentle Fist" because they never strike with a closed fist, always with an open palm. But this style is anything but gentle; each attack closes off a chakra point on contact.
makes more sense now
Now, here’s a few generic cards we just have to have.
Kunai [Konoha]
Possession * Hand Weapon
Strength: +2
Bearer must be a Ninja.
Ninjas mostly fight with their fists, but sometimes they need an extra... edge.
sure
Rapid Blows [Konoha]
Event * Skirmish
Make a companion with Byakugan strength +2 (or +3 if that companion has resistance 4 or more).
