Okay, for those who haven’t been keeping up, we’ve got a change of plans. Originally, according to the poll that led to Gondor being the last Duo topic, the Shadow side of the Green culture was going to be next. However, in another poll conducted just this morning, I surmised (and the populace agreed) that we should probably follow up Gondor with the two cultures closely tied to it in Lasting Alliances--those being the Elven and Rohan cultures--and THEN move on to Green Shadow stuff. In the end, by a 4-3 margin, Elven came out on top.

So, all that leads up to...this!

Dáin’s DC Duos #141

The Lasting Alliances Elven culture, like Gondor, is spread across a couple events that are thousands of years apart. Much of it comes from their golden age during the wars of the Last Alliance, side-by-side with their Númenórean allies. But there is also a big chunk that comes from their brief but important support to Thorin’s company during their stop in Rivendell during the Quest of Erebor. Not surprisingly, their Last Alliance-cenetered cards are, like their Gondor counterparts, powerful beatdown machines. The Rivendell side from the time of The Hobbit is more "typically" Elven, with healing and similiar support cards.

Since we’re doing Elves now as a direct follow-up to Gondor, we’ll start with the Last Alliance stuff. And since we started Gondor with the top commanders of the Númenóreans, we’ll start the Elven culture the same way. You may want to cross-reference the cards in the following Duos with the Gondor side of the Last Alliance, as you’ll notice some direct corrolations as we move through. Enjoy!

5Gil-galad, High-King of the Noldor Elven
Companion • Elf
Strength: 9
Vitality: 4
Signet: Elrond
To play, spot 2 Elves (or an Elf and a Gondor Man).
Maneuver: Exert Gil-galad twice and exert another Elf or a Gondor Man to liberate a site.
Each time Gil-galad takes a wound, each Elven Elf is strength +1 until the regroup phase.
“‘Gil-Galad was the last of the great Elf-Kings of Middle-Earth....’”

4Elrond, Vice-regent of Eriador Elven
Companion • Elf
Strength: 8
Vitality: 4
Signet: Elrond
To play, spot a unique Elf and a non-Elf companion.
At the start of each fellowship phase, you may add 2 to heal another Elven or Gondor character.
Skirmish: Exert Elrond twice to play an Elven tale or Elven skirmish event from your draw deck.
“‘I was the herald of Gil-galad and marched with his host. I was at the Battle of Dagorlad before the Black Gate of Mordor, where we had the mastery....’”

3Thranduil, The Elvenking Elven
Companion • Elf
Strength: 6
Vitality: 3
Resistance: 7
While you can spot a Green Elf, Thranduil is also a Green Elf.
Thranduil is strength +1 for each Free Peoples culture you can spot (limit +3).
Each archery and skirmish event of the same culture as Thranduil is twilight cost -1.
“‘Our advantage in numbers will be enough, if in the end it must come to unhappy blows.’”

This last one’s kind of a "bonus" card. We covered him as we moved through the Green Wood-elves, but I figured he deserved a second posting here.

EDIT: Oh, and as always, with this being a new thread, your first review gets you an automatic, authentic, and autographed GP!

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!

Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North!

Interesting. Kinda specific.

And rather powerful. Any multiculture deck with an elf can benefit. Or any elf deck with a splash companion.

cool, gil-galad is always cool because he has 9 strength and 5 vitality. but this one is really neat.

cool, i think the healing should be annother Elven or Gondor companion.

Okay, I changed Gil-galad to ALMOST what you recommended, SoP. Razz

Dáin’s DC Duos #142

We’re not done with Elven characters, but before we move too far away from Gil-galad, I wanted to get to his famous spear, as well as a spear for Elves in general. Enjoy!

2Aiglos, Spear of Ereinion Elven
Artifact • Hand Weapon
Strength +1
Vitality +1
Resistance +1
Bearer must be an Elf.
If bearer is Gil-galad, he is strength +1 for each wound on him.
Skirmish: Exert bearer twice to wound a minion skirmishing bearer X times, where X is the strength bonus of Aiglos.
“‘Against Aeglos the spear of Gil-galad none could stand....’”

Very similar to this set’s Narsil, just like Gil-galad is very similar to Elendil. But that’s not a bad thing, right?

1 Elven Polearm Elven
Possession • Hand Weapon
Strength +1
Pike. Bearer must be an Elf.
If bearer is skirmishing an Orc or a wounded minion, bearer is strength +1.
The spears of the Elves were long and somewhat curved, excellent for broad, devestating sweeps.

For those who A.) have forgotten or B.) haven’t seen yet, pike is a new unloaded keyword in my sets. There’re not a whole lot of them, but there are a handful of hand weapons that have the word and a handful of cards that reference such weapons. If it’s too confusing, just ignore the pike part for now. Razz

whoa, this is over powered compared to the other aiglos. no need for the strength and resistance boost, though the add an extremely cool feel. i’d keep them and reduce the wounding ability a lot.

Actually, it’s not. It’s spelled "Aeglos" in that lore.

Certain characters key off them, especially, getting extra boosts from them. Certain events/conditions spot them to do nasty things to the opponent. It’s not a big theme, but an interesting one, especially in later sets.

I respectfully disagree. The original can get as much as a +6 strength boost, and can have as big (if not bigger) a direct wounding ability (as high as 9, or higher if you add in Elf allies!). Granted, with this new version, a fully-loaded Gil-galad (bearing this, The Tale of Gil-galad, Vilya, Ring of Air, and Ent Draught), the strength bonus is higher than the original (+7 on an exahusted Gil-galad, by my count), but I still think it’s comparable to the original Aiglos. It’s actually a little inferior except for the resistance boost, IMO.
