Okay, I think we’re all done with Hobbits from the set, so let’s move on the natural next step: the friend of the Shirefolk himself, Gandalf!
The culture in my FotR set The Road Ahead is focused around familiar themes (especially old-school Fellowship block stuff), so there’s not a whole lot of surprises here. Gandalf himself has some strong ties, which you might expect, but as per usual, splashes well with pretty much any culture, with support cards to go along with him.
One surprise you WILL find in the set is a strong emphasis on another Wizard: Radagast, who gets several support cards as well and TWO new versions.
There will also be some cards that have little or nothing to do with Wizards. Men get a little more help to go along with the big Lakemen subculture established in the preceding set Lasting Alliances. Ealges get a little help, and there’s also one more race added the culture that, until now, has never appeared inside the culture.
For now, though, let’s take a look at everyone’s favorite Wizard. Enjoy!
•Gandalf, Disturber of the Peace
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Signet: Frodo
If Gandalf is in your starting fellowship and you can spot a Ring-bound Hobbit, his twilight cost is -1.
Maneuver: Exert Gandalf twice (or once if you can spot a Ring-bound Hobbit) to take a tale into hand from your discard pile.
“‘If you’re referring to the incident with the dragon, I was barely involved. All I did was give your uncle a little nudge out of the door.’”
•Gandalf, Grey Messenger
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Signet: Elrond
Muster. Toil 1. To play, spot an Elf.
While you can spot 4 Free Peoples races, at the start of each turn, you may draw a card.
“‘Gandalf will go; for this shall be his great task, and maybe the end of his labours.’” |

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!
Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North! |

I would give him muster. Good to see the Elrond signet again! |

Okay, will do.
And yes, the Elrond (and Thorin, for that matter) signet is dotted throughout all my sets. It’s biggest set of all may be this very one, though.
Thanks for the review! |

When I came to Abraham I let him live just a moment longer. When I came to Moses I saved his life more than once. But the salmon... I regret to say I had a hand in its death.

Thanks! I try and use lore as a guideline for the text of the card whenever I can rather than just slapping some random quote on there. I design from the bottom up in those cases; lore, THEN the rest of the card. You’d be amazed how many good titles/subtitles and what neat gametexts you can get just by applying Tolkien’s words to a card. Makes my job easier most of the time.
Oops. I shouldn’t be giving away trade secrets. |

Hmmm. I’ll do 1 Ring-bound Hobbit, but I’m reluctant to do 2, because that all but eliminates this working in the starting fellowship (which was one big intention behind it).

Instead of the first line of text, or in addition to it? I think both would be a wee bit much, personally. I like the idea of a toil Gandalf, though. If I end up not using it here, I promise I will in another version sometime. Good thought!

Cool card. A bit underpowerd, unless there’s a lot of tales that are getting discarded.

Meh. It’s good, but... I don’t know. I keep thinking of the amazingness of Gandalf, Returned, and Gandalf, Leader of the Company. |

After further consideration, I decided to drop the lengthy twilight reduction text on Gandalf, Grey Messenger in favor of SoP’s suggestion for a simple toil 1. Let me know if you hate that idea...I can always change it back.
In the meantime, here’s some Gandalf possessions. And they are, perhaps, not the type of possessions that would first come to mind when you think of Gandalf. Enjoy!
•Galeroc, Swift Steed
Possession • Mount
Resistance +1
Bearer must be a Wizard.
When you play Galeroc, spot Gandalf to play a support area possession from your draw deck or discard pile.
Skirmish: Exert bearer twice to cancel a skirmish involving him.
“‘I have one advantage: there is no horse in Mordor or in Rohan that is as swift as Galeroc.’”
Before Shadowfax, before Gandalf became a White Wizard, before the fellowship was ever formed, Gandalf still had a trusty steed. Remember that brown horse he had at the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring? Well so does Tolkien. He even gave the horse a name! So I figured that, despite its brief appearance, this faithful beast of burden that both carried Gandalf around and pulled his cart all over the Shire deserved a card.
•Gandalf’s Cart, Welcome Sight
Possession • Support Area
Fellowship or Regroup: Stack a artifact or possession here from hand or from play.
Maneuver: Discard a card from hand to play a card stacked here as if played from hand.
“It had a cargo of fireworks, as they rightly guessed. At Bilbo’s front door the old man began to unload: there were great bundles of fireworks of all sorts and shapes, each labelled with a large red G....”
For this one, I need your help. I designed it to be very similar to the original Gandalf’s Cart, but different enough to be interesting. However, I’m wondering if something like the following would be better:
Fellowship or Regroup: Spot less than 3 cards stacked here to stack a card from hand here.
Maneuver: Discard a card stacked here to heal a companion or remove a burden.
What do you think? s for anyone who helps me decide. |
