Ok so im sure all of you are familiar with the concept of the culture being completely smegged up in terms of gameplay. Well i have a little (hmmm maybe im lying there) story to share with you to explain why im one of the fore runners in loathing the culture currently.
Im at my usual friday night gaming group, theres me and 3 mates. Im playing an anarion deck with boromir rb and pippin wobas starting. In the deck i have halbarad aragorn thorongil and faramir as more companions. This deck has beaten many others and personally i find it immense fun to play, but it has its weaknesses like most other decks (like the week before where anarion died at site 2 to mauhur with a beserker touch). So im happily tootling along playing against uruks primarily. But the 2nd shadow player is playing a deck he has used for the last few weeks and quite frankly was beginning to annoy me, but this week topped it off.
The deck works like this:
Millions of conditions:
Always threatening
Enemy upon enemy
orkish smith
goblin hordes
beasts of burden
many others
lots of small cheap lurkers and horror of harad who is free (toil)
Now i was playing gondor... so no condition removal. I aint using pallando cos i dont want to exert anarion twice or boromir as then i die.... And splashing pallando into every deck is a silly way of saying orcs arent broken cos theres conditon removal for everyone.
Aaaaanyway.... I cant do jack to stop him, so every turn he chucks conditions to multiple beasts of burden to play lurkers for free or for 1. He uses his goblin hordes (controlling site path with unforgiving depths) to take back smiths who play his conditions out again. He plays always threatening out often many copies at once, and puts like 15 tokens on each, and it didnt help someone else was playing so he spotted even more conditions. Eventually i get boromir into more than 1 fight as anarion is already taking like 4 lurkers so i take burdens. That means enemy upon enemy can now trigger as much as i try to stop it. Trying to stay alive i use rally the company and banners blowing, but o dear, whats that? Ive left 3 in the pool. So im forced march to site 7 where my mate uses up about 8 pool to play a couple of uruks. Leaving 3 in. The guy uses beasts of burden to plays 2 orc skulkers free, toils a horror out for free, plays a skulker from hand and plays 3 stacked lurkers out all for . This meant i had 4 gondor companions and over 9 minions to face and theres was no way i can stop a lurker going on boromir. This meant he had ~60 tokens so could make a lurker +60 strength and there were already 3 minions on the rb, who, incidentally, died....
The best bit is because of the smith/hordes he can get back always threatening whenever he needs it, just by using it up one turn and discarding it to play next turn, and he can use forced march again. YAY! NOT....
Believe me when I say that was an NPE for me.
Needless to say im not facing that deck again or i will just surrender. Until foot of mount doom comes back and sleep caradhras gets re printed i will fold to this deck at site 1, unless the smith and forced march get X-ed. |

Ouch. I’m surprised that you made it to site 7. |
I had to put something here. |

If the other guy wasnt using the pool up on expensive uruks i wouldnt have done! But as soon as you get a burden or 2 the lurkers come out for free especially with beasts of burden so leaving nothing in the pool still means ~4 lurkers. |

it does seem a bit ridiculous. Normally what I would say is that you just ran into the shadow that bests your freeps and that you would need to win the game with your shadow, but I am definately with you in that the orc culture needs either more cards to stop it (foot of mount doom!) and possibly an x or r-listing as well. What about Orc Smith being R-listed... that could be a decent solution? |

Mate im telling you x the smith is the only way, even 1 of him would be got back every turn and you would still cycle a condition which can be used badly. And forced march is so unbelieveably not fun to play against it needs dealing with. Having to move past a sanctuary with 7 lurkers on the table is such a bad player experience it just aint funny. My solution is too get rid of all the cards and start again ive just had so much of them, but realistically D need to pay attention to these 2 cards mainly. O and with T&D Destroyers and Usurpers, Frenzy of Arrows and Gothmog. Quite honestly against the will of D several cards need doing something about. |

lurkers when combined with rallying orc are a nasty swarm. Look at the links of the cards ive mentioned and youll see what can happen. Always threatening can make them huge. |

Thanks SoP. Has anyone else come across this sort of totally not fun experience? |

When Demoralized wasn’t X-Listed, my brother had a Lurker swarm deck. I believe he used 4 Rallying Orc, 4 Goblin Hordes, 4 Demoralized, and Unforgiving Depths to get the site path. I once gotten 10 minions against 5 companions (all exhausted thanks to Rallying Orc) and he got all the twilight from Demoralized. See, Demoralized was CLEARLY a broken card as it was non-unique and added tokens easily. I’m not going to face a Frenzy of Arrows/Gothmog deck until at least one of those cards gets X/R-listed. (Or maybe I will with the new need to splash Galadriel w/Elven Armaments into every deck now) |
