Right Dain, you asked for this, and now you’re going to get what’s coming to you.
I’ve obviously got some keywords and mechanics in mind, but I’ll start with some simpler stuff, which means some juicy dwarves (because, after all, isn’t that what The Hobbit is really about?). Here’s a glimpse into the strategy with a couple of conditions and events, along with some hardy folk of the race of durin:
Caverns Old
Event • Skirmish
Add a threat to make a Dwarf strength +2 and damage +1 (or damage +2 if at an underground site).
Far over the Misty Mountains cold...
H1 C 12
Face of Danger
Event • Fellowship
Spot a Dwarf companion and add a threat to draw 2 cards.
’We shall soon before the break of day start on our long journey, a journey from which some of us, perhaps all of us... may never return.’
H1 C 28
Great Warriors
Condition • Support Area
While you can spot 3 threats, each Dwarf is damage +1.
... for they sounded much too adventurous...
H1 C 36
• Danger
Condition • Support Area
While threats cannot be added, each Dwarf is Vitality +1.
... all traveling expenses guaranteed in any event, funeral expenses to be defrayed by us and our representatives...
H1 R 14
• Ori, Faithful Companion
Companion • Dwarf
Str: 6
Vit: 3
Res: 6
Each time a event is played, you may exert Ori to add or remove a threat.
Gandalf whistled again; but Nori and Ori were there almost before he had stopped...
H1 U 43
• Nori, Faithful Companion
Companion • Dwarf
Str: 6
Vit: 3
Res: 6
Each time a shadow card removes a threat, you may exert Nori to add or remove a threat.
He had hardly turned the knob before they were all inside, bowing and saying ’at your service’ one after another.
H1 U 45
• Thorin, Oakenshield
Companion • Dwarf
Str: 7
Vit: 4
Res: 5
Damage +1
While you can spot 3 Dwarves, Thorin is strength +1 for each threat you can spot.
It is said that Thorin’s shield was cloven and he cast it away and he hewed off with his axe a branch of oak and held it in his left hand to ward off the strokes of his foes...
H1 R 55
• Balin, Son of Fundin
Companion • Dwarf
Strength 7
Vitality 4
Resistance 7
Bilbo is Strength +1.
Skirmish: Exert Bilbo to make Balin strength +2.
Then Balin, who had grasped Bilbo’s plan better than the rest, led an attack.
H1 R 5
• Gloin, Dwarf of Erebor
Companion • Dwarf
Strength 7
Vitality 3
Resistance 6
Gloin’s twilight cost is -1 in your starting fellowship.
Fellowship: Exert Gloin to reveal the top 3 cards of your draw deck. For each of those cards, you may add a threat to take it into hand. Replace the rest in the same order.
’What!’ cried Gloin. ’One of those simpletons down in the shire?’
H1 R 33
• Dwalin, Brother of Balin
Companion • Dwarf
Strength 7
Vitality 3
Resistance 6
While you can spot a Dwarf, Dwalin’s twilight cost is -1.
Skirmish: Exert Dwalin to make a Dwarf Damage +1
It was a dwarf with a blue beard tucked into a golden belt, and very bright eyes under his dark green hood.
H1 R 21
• Dori, Decent Fellow
Companion • Dwarf
Strength 6
Vitality 3
Resistance 6
Each time a card removes one or more threats, you may heal a Dwarf.
He made the hobbit scramble on his shoulders as best he could with his tied hands, and then off they went at a run...
H1 R 18
Hilt of Sword
Event • Skirmish
Add 2 threats to make a Dwarf strength +6.
On silver necklaces they strung / The flowering stars on crowns they hung.
H1 U 39
May Never Return
Event • Response
If a Dwarf wins a skirmish, add or remove a threat.
’You will all (possibly) live to thank me...’
H1 C 44
• Race of Durin
Condition • Support Area
Tale. Each time a Dwarf is about to exert, you may add a threat and to place no token for that exertion.
He was the father of the eldest race of dwarves, the Longbeards...
H1 R 49
Long Awaited Vengeance
Condition • Support Area
Response: If a Dwarf companion is killed, discard this condition to remove all threats. Wound a companion and a minion for each threat removed in this way.
’We still mean to get it back, and to bring our curses home to Smaug - if we can.’
H1 R 43
Dungeons Deep
Event • Skirmish
Add a threat to make a Dwarf strength +3 (and Damage +1 if he or she is skirmishing an Orc).
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells... // In places deep where dark things sleep / In hollow halls beneath the fells.
Stout Companions
Condition • Support Area
While you can spot 4 threats, each Dwarf is strength +1.
For one thing, Bombur was immensely fat and heavy.
H1 C 52
• Dwarven Fortitude
Condition • Support Area
While you can spot 5 threats, no Dwarf can take more than 1 wound in a skirmish.
... for dwarves can roll along at a tremendous pace, I can tell you, when they have to...
H1 U 26
Dwarven Mail
Possession • Armor
Bearer must be a Dwarf.
Response: If bearer is about to exert, add a threat (or discard a possession borne by bearer) to place no token for that exertion.
Each one of his folk was clad in a hauberk of steel mail that hung to his knees.
H1 U 27
Dwarven Battleaxe
Possession • Hand Weapon
Bearer must be a Dwarf.
While bearer is Damage +X, bearer is strength +X.
Thorin wielded his axe with mighty strokes, and nothing seemed to harm him.
H1 U 25

Thanks a lot for reviews. I’m going on to some eagles now (Flyer = can only take 1 wound in each phase, regardless of its source):
Eagle Rescuer
Companion • Eagle
Strength 6
Vitality 3
Resistance 6
Flyer.
To play spot a wizard or Eagle.
You may play this companion any time you could play a skirmish event. When this companion is played, you may wound a minion.
Other birds flew to the tree-tops and seized the dwarves...
H1 U 95
• Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles
Companion • Eagle
Strength 8
Vitality 4
Resistance 7
Flyer.
For each wizard you can spot, Gwaihir’s twilight cost is -2.
You may play this companion any time you could play a regroup event. When this companion is played, you may discard a minion.
The Lord of the Eagles.. had eyes that could... see a rabbit moving on the ground a mile below.
H1 R 107
Looking Ahead
Event • Maneuver
Discard a wizard or Eagle.
’Where did you go, if I may ask?’
H1 C 113
Looking Behind
Event • Regroup
Play a wizard (or add to play an Eagle) from your discard pile to discard up to 2 minions.
It was the wizard’s voice that had kept the trolls bickering and quarelling until the light came and made an end of them.
H1 C 114
• Lonely Pinnacle
Condition • Support Area
Each time an eagle is played, you may exert it to take a event into hand from your discard pile.
Fellowship: Discard an Eagle or play an Eagle from your discard pile. Discard this condition.
The goblins hated the eagles... but could not reach their lofty seats...
H1 U 112
And of course, no eagles would be complete without our resident organiser of adventures:
• Gandalf, Excellent Guide
Companion • Wizard
Strength 7
Vitality 4
Resistance 7
When this companion is played, you may choose one: replace one of your sites on the site path with one from your adventure deck; or play the fellowship’s next site.
... it was a very slow business, even guided by Gandalf, who seemed to know his way about pretty well.

I’d eliminate the first sentence, and give it a spotting requirement such as "To play, spot an eagle or a wizard." Nice idea behind it.

For a rare, looks pretty good! I’d make it say "For each wizard you can spot, Gwaihir’s twilight cost is -1." Otherwise he could potentially come out for .

It can also kill you in the archery phase! There definitely aren’t any Eagle ring-bearers! Also, you’ll note that the eagles have worse stats for their cost to compensate.

I take that point.

Believe it or not, that was, in fact my intention! He can come out for 0 with another card I haven’t spoiled! If you think it’s too good though...
foresight wrote: Hmm, wow! I’d make it an uncommon. Also make it cost or instead of .
Are you sure? You still have to pay for the companion. Narrow escape is free and this one is quite similar to it.
Thanks for the review. I would be putting the GP symbol into my post, but I don’t know how to get it!

I accept your concerns, but I’m unconvinced. The condition is cost and requires an exertion to take the event back. Plus, without event recursion to discard and replay the eagles, the strategy dies as they’re not actually that good in a fight, especially for their cost. I’ll playtest them some more, and thanks a lot for your thoughts.

Change that period to a comma and it’s perfect.
Thranduil
Just another nitpick, there needs to be a period after "Flyer" on each of your cards. That’s nothing major, I just like proper formatting. It makes me happy.
GP for the awesome cards! They fit eagles perfectly, "flying" in or out of play at their leisure. |
