Well, I realized that I’ve already gone through most of the FP cultures in The Road Ahead already, and I actually only have two major Shadow cultures left as well!
Today, we start the bigger of the two: . As this set goes back to LOTR TCG’s roots, you can expect a fresh look at the strategies that made great back in the day, before they even got into the site control they were known for from TTT forward. That means lots of Uruks, a few Orcs, and one very notable Wizard.
Saruman played a BIG role in Fellowship of the Ring, as it was the only time he directly interfered in the fellowship’s quest, capturing and torturing Gandalf and sending storms and Uruks to harrass Frodo and his companions. Granted, his greatest impact was arguably in the battles against Rohan later, but Frodo was, by then, beyond his reach.
Not so in this set. spells are back, and they’re not limited to weather anymore. Saruman can also get down and dirty and skirmish himself when the time calls for it...especially as a Wizard-killing specialist.
So here are the two versions of Saruman found in The Road Ahead, and in coming days, we’ll go into his artifacts, spells, and other nasty stuff. Enjoy!
•Saruman, Ring-maker
Minion • Wizard
Strength: 8
Vitality: 4
Site: 4
Saruman may not take wounds during the archery phase and may not be assigned to a skirmish.
Each time an artifact is played or discarded, you may heal Saruman.
Response: If the Ring-bearer puts on The One Ring, exert Saruman twice and spot X burdens to make X Uruk-hai fierce until the regroup phase.
“‘The lore of the Elven-rings, great and small, is his province. He has long studied it, seeking the lost secrets of their making....’”
•Saruman, Cold and Perilous
Minion • Wizard
Strength: 8
Vitality: 4
Site: 4
Lurker.
While skirmishing a Wizard, Saruman gains hunter 2 and is damage +1.
Each time an or minion wins a skirmish, you may exert Saruman to draw a card or make an or minion gain hunter 1 until the regroup phase.
“‘Well, I see that this wise course does not commend itself to you. Not yet? Not if some better way can be contrived?’” |

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!
Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North! |

I like the first one a lot, the second one less. That is due to my dislike of the new Uruk culture, but as I said, the first one I like. Not sure of you could call Saruman a Ring-maker, he was more like a collector.... |

Underpowered DI. Cant guarantee you’ll put on the ring and even then you have to have some burdens. Needs changing in some way to make it more versatile.

Phrase it hunter 2, and damage +1. Need to state fierce is until the regroup. Rest is fine.

Normally I’d agree, but I have some cards to back this up. Don’t rule it out just yet....
Thanks for the reviews, boys. to each of you for your first review in this new thread. |

Well, let’s just say that I’ve always liked cards like Saruman’s Reach, Resistance Becomes Unbearable, and Too Much Attention, so you can expect at least one of those to be reprinted and for other cards like them to appear. In fact, some already have, like the card Fear of Discovery. |

Alright, looks like that’s it for reviews, though if anyone still wants to go back and do Saruman, by all means, go right ahead.
In the meantime, here’s some of Saruman’s "stuff", including an artifact that has, somewhat surprisingly, never made it into LOTR TCG. Enjoy!
•Saruman’s Staff, Heavy Black Staff
Artifact • Staff
Strength +2
Bearer must be Saruman. He is fierce.
Shadow: Make the first sentence of Saruman’s game text not apply until the regroup phase.
Each time a spell is played, you may exert Saruman to exert a companion (twice if that companion is skirmishing Saruman).
“The figure lifted his arms and a light flashed from the staff that he wielded.”
•Saruman’s Ring
Artifact • Ring
Bearer must be Saruman.
The twilight cost of each spell is -1.
Shadow: Exert Saruman twice or discard this artifact to take an spell into hand from your discard pile.
“‘But I rode to the foot of Orthanc, and came to the stair of Saruman....He wore a ring on his finger.’” |

I’d give it some sort of stat boost at least. Vitality or strength. |
