Hey, someone told me that a new LOTR book, based off of some of Tolkien’s manuscripts was published.

I have no idea what this book is about. Christopher Tolkien compiled it from the manuscripts and published it recently.

Does anyone have it, or know a lot about it?

Give me some info. Mr. Green

Purchased and read. Cool

It’s good. Really good. The narrative style is "higher" than LotR, but not as much as Silmarillion. Shouldn’t be too high to annoy readers who are unused to that type of stuff.

Also purchased it, also read it. The story is familiair for those who know The Silmarillion and the Lost Tales. In that way it was a bit dissapoiting, because there is almost nothing new in it. But the best thing is that it is now 1 story, it is a beautiful, but tragic story! Definitely great for those who do not know the story yet and it is movie-material!

Will i enjoy it, having only read the trilogy and the hobbit and not the silmarillion?

It is a tragic, but beautiful story about how Elves and Men try to survive against Morgoth, the ruler, of who Sauron was just a padawan. It is a story about Túrin, a proud, strong and very bittered young man, who tries to find his way in fighting Morgoth as much as possible. Sadly his own character is working against him so it is a very tragic struggle. It is well written and I have to agree with A-D. It is narrative written but very well do-able. I loved the story! I hope others can agree, but actualy I must be reluctant to give advice, like the elves, because it’s a dangerous gift. Wink Maybe your expectations went up by reading my review, and you know: the higher the expectation, the bigger the dissapointment (possibly)...
But it is great... Dancing Laughing

It would definitely help to have read the Silmarillion, but there is an introduction which should explain most of the stuff, though not necessarily all. There’s also mention of several characters, Like Maeglin, from the Silmarillion who show up in Children of Hurin, but don’t actually do anything, so you might wonder why some of them are there. Because they’re actually significant, just not in this story. But I expect that it would still be good, even if you haven’t read Silmarillion.
It’s also alot darker, and everyone (literally everyone) dies.

A quick list of things to know:
1. Morgoth (a corrupted Valar) is the Dark Lord, and Sauron is just his lieutenant.
2. The map will be entirely different. Later on, the Valar declare war on Morgoth, and wipe out half of Middle-Earth in the process.
3. Gondolin is an Elven city which is hidden in the mountains, and no-one knows how to get in or out, or even exactly where it is. The king, Turgon, keeps it like that so that Morgoth won’t destroy it, and Turgon can build his army to fight Morgoth at a more opportune time.
4. The Minas Tirith in Children of Hurin is a different Minas Tirith than in LotR
