I have seen some people play with A New Light from ROS. They play with it in a way that does not make sense to me and I want to confirm my line of thinking. The cards first ability fails to recognize a target, be it shadow or free peoples. As a result I have seen people play with this card and target themselves on the free peoples side, pulling a minion back to there hand. The second ability specifies a Shadow player, referencing that the first action should be against a shadow player. Is this strictly for use against the shadow side, or can I truly target myself as a free peoples player, and go get a minion, and the second ability has no effect. Thanks for any help offered.

You have to pay a cost to get an effect, and when you get that effect, you do as much of it as you can. So the cost here is spotting a Gandalf wizard. Easy enough. Ok, then you return a minion to its owner’s hand, and it don’t matter which player because it doesn’t force you to target a shadow player. If you did pick a shadow player to do that, then you read the second part of the effect. If you’re the Free Peoples player, you don’t read the second part of the effect.

If you target yourself, the FP player, then it isn’t a shadow player who took a minion into hand, so the rest of the effect can’t be carried out. Pay all costs, (spot the wizard) and carry out as much of the effect as possible.
It was porbably intended that this card would be used against shadow players, but Decipher has a terrible habit of not playtesting this stuff....
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true.

Or overemphasizing the "Spirit" of the game.

Yes, this card can take your own minion into hand. Or it can clog your opponent’s hand with a useless minion and get rid of a big minion.

Kinda funny vs a Sauron, Dark Lord of Mordor deck. Send Warg-Rider to hand and discard Sauron. Laughing

I must agree with the problems with Decipher. The potential abuse of this card is essentially limitless. So many decks that can benefit unbelievably from this little jewel.

Not to mention all the event recursion that Gandalf already has. You can just keep getting it back and keep getting any minion you want back from your discard pile into your hand. Rolling Eyes
