Thanks to everyone who reviewed the last Shadow culture: Mirkwood. Hope you enjoyed it, despite how small it was.
Now, we start a MASSIVE Shadow culture. I don’t have an exact size yet, but I imagine it will rival the huge 63-card culture for the title of largest Shadow culture in The Road Ahead. We’ll see how it comes out when all is said and done.
is mostly goblins, of course, and has lots of swarming potential, just like the Fellowship block culture that is STILL extensively used in Expanded and Open play despite having only 10 cards released since Realms of the Elf-lords. It’s clear people love their goblins, so they’ll have plenty to work with again in this set, as they did in Lasting Alliances.
But , of course, is about more than just goblins. One big reason it has survived as a still-used culture is not because of goblins at all, but because of bigger, more menacing threats. The Balrog is the big dog of Moria, of course, but there’s also The Cave Troll of Moria and another big minion that has generated a lot of LOTR TCG news again lately: the Watcher in the Water.
It is this final minion that will be featured as we ready ourselves to enter Moria. We’ll follow the same journey the fellowship did, so once we’re past the Watcher, we’ll get to goblins, then the Cave Troll, and then finally to Ol’ Balgy himself.
Wait, what’s that ripple in the water...?
Oh no! It’s--
•Watcher in the Water, Dark Terror of the Sirannon
Minion • Creature
Strength: 11
Vitality: 4
Site: 4
Lurker. Fierce. Hunter 1. Each tentacle is strength +1, damage +1, and enduring.
Response: If a Creature takes a wound (except from losing a skirmish), exert Watcher in the Water to play a tentacle from your hand or discard pile and make the Free Peoples player exert a companion.
Watcher in the Water may not bear possessions and is discarded if not at a marsh or river.
“The others swung round and saw the waters of the lake seething, as if a host of snakes were swimming up from the southern end.”
More like the old-school Watcher in the Water, Keeper of Westgate than the new Watcher in the Water, Many-tentacled Creature, but unique enough and useful enough to hopefully stand out from either of those versions. This one brings a new site possibility into play than just marshes, for one thing: rivers. I figured this makes a lot of sense since the Watcher was in more of a lake (fed by the River Sirannon) than a marsh anyway. Plus, it helps ensure you’ll see him more often than you might otherwise.
But the fun doesn’t end there; this Watcher has a truly brutal way of cycling tentacles into play...and exerting companions at the same time! This helps in skirmishes, obviously, but may not be as effective then since it’s too late to assign those tentacles. But it can REALLY shut down pre-skirmish wounding...the Free Peoples player will think twice about pelting the Watcher or other Creatures with archery fire or cards like Terrible and Evil, Reckless We Rode, The Fortunes of Balin’s Folk, and No Travellers in This Land when it means they have to exert companions and THEN have more tentacles to assign later!
EDIT: Oh, and one more thing: it doesn’t require discarding other non-tentacle minions, so you can even pair it with goblins or any other minion(s) you like.
So what do you think? Too powerful? I raised the Watcher’s "normal" cost from to to try and compensate, but is it enough? |

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!
Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North! |

I would make it exert a companion instead of wound a companion. Neat card! |
I had to put something here. |

I dont think so Dain, still a bit too powerful. 1 extra twilight more for being 1 strength lurker hunter 1, extra gametext and all the tentacles are enduring. Way too much better than the old one. Not too bothered about the lurker and strength but he needs to cost 1 more because he makes the tentacles enduring.
Second you need to say "if a creature takes a wound" (cos also saying wounded doesnt work cos thats a state of existance i.e. if you have a wound you are wounded, you need to say takes a wound) in the maneuver or archery phase, because it would take a wound from losing a skirmish and its too mean to play another and wound a companion just because they won a skirmish!
I really like the idea though Dain im glad you made a Watcher and i love the river bit it makes so much sense.

I kept its cost at , lem0n, but I lowered its strength back to 11 and tweaked the ability so it doesn’t trigger from losing skirmishes; good catch! I still want it to be able to trigger if you do some direct wounding during a skirmish, though. |

I actually don’t think it’s a problem playing tentacles by losing a skirmish - it’s powerful but you still need to pay for them and unless they’re fierce they won’t fight anyway.

Looks to me that they’re strength +1, damage +1 and enduring.
