Since these versions of Merry and Pippin add to the # of ents you can spot, there seems to be a problem here.
Since Ents are always a  companion, could adding to the number of ents increase the number of companions able to be spotted?
Really I wouldn’t try this in one of my games, but just thinking... |

Yep that’s what I thought. 
So they only add to the Ents not companions. |

This is crazy. Of course not. Ents don’t add to the number of companions unless  men add to the number of  and men. Or maybe you’d try packing Guidance of the Istari in a HIDAN deck for a strength +9 pump? Or perhaps give Aragorn a Beorning Axe?

Interesting question, though: do Merry ItBoH and Pippin ItBoH each add 2 towards the Rule of 9? I wouldn’t think so, since it doesn’t say "companion" anywhere, but while we’re speculating....  |

GUys, please, seriously, it’s fairly simple. Merry and Pippin are each ONE companion, from the  culture, with a special ability: if you have to count the number of Ents for any reason, they count as well. Simple as that. |
