...if anything.
Just curious if it’s still top-ranked, or been neutered in some way. Any strategies to beat the horde turn after turn? Seems like they always get me in the end. |

In a nutshell, Shadowplay is the way to go. Totally agree with NB. Dwarves also have Great Day, Great Hour which produces a similar effect, but far and away Shadowplay (also a good Joy Division song covered by The Killers) is the way to go. |

If Troll Swarm is so hard to stop, why isn’t it a more potent deck in the major metas? |

Because it requires a perfect FP to make it work.
Basically, the deck has to be built perfectly for it to work, which is difficult. I’ve seen this from experience on SdA.
Besides, who has 4 Keywards, 4 Hordes, 4 Wargs and a bunch of Trolls sitting around? Its EXTREMELY expensive. |

I would think some Spurred To Battle, Demoralized, and Coordinated Effort would help. I mean, Trolls don’t exactly need a lot of other support cards.
Maybe a couple Unreasonable Choices, or Orc Spears....
With some of those, plus the Keyward, you’re generating a goodly amount of twilight, and should at least be able to drop a few Trolls on them by the second half of the game. |
Best regards, Dáin, Vice Aftokrator of the Chosen Ones
Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!
Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North! |

Shadowplay is fantastic. For splashes I’ll try Great Day, Great Hour though I’m thinking it’s a roll of the dice if I draw it before a dedicated Swarm deck sets up (heck, and keep drawing it afterward). Gartax, I completely forgot Coif had that ability!
Well, here’s a rough Troll deck I threw together. It uses Delving, Mithril Shaft, and Seeing Stone of Orthanc to set up the swarm:
---
Ring-bearer and the One Ring:
1 Gimli, Bearer of Grudges
1 The One Ring, The Ring of Doom
Free Peoples (30):
1 Farmer Maggot, Hobbit of the Marish (starting)
1 Merry, In the Bloom of Health (starting)
1 Pippin, In the Bloom of Health (starting)
1 Quickbeam, Bregalad (starting)
1 Skinbark, Fladrif (starting)
1 Host of Fangorn (starting)
1 Ent Horde (starting)
4 Isildur, Heir of Elendil
1 Gimli’s Helm (threat absorber)
1 Ring of Guile (Mithril Shaft recursion)
3 Seeing Stone of Orthanc
4 Enraged
2 Ent Moot
4 Delving
4 Mithril Shaft
Shadow (30):
4 Beastly Olog-hai
3 Cave Troll of Moria, Savage Menace
2 Horror of Harad
4 Ordnance Grunt
4 Porter Troll
3 Tower Troll
4 Troll’s Keyward, Keeper of the Beast
4 Relentless Warg
2 Vicious Warg
---
Doesn’t take much brains to play. The starting fellowship filters out a sizable chunk of Free Peoples cards, and it’s nearly set to max out on the Seeing Stone (with Isildur as the ninth companion). Another nice thing is that you’re almost guaranteed to see a minion at site 2 so Mithril Shaft can kick in. The deck should be able to set up Keyward + Warg + Trolls for three turns in a row, sites 2-4 if you’re lucky, otherwise 3-5. Beyond that the fellowship will probably collapse. *LOL*
Comments, decks of your own to show Socks how it should be done? Feel free to post them here. |

well i won’t comment of the freep since it is expended
in that shadow side you have 1 big problem cycling.
Because of spotting recrirement
Troll need you to spot an orc or minion except tower troll and the Cave troll
but then you have the half troll..... you may be OK but i think you need more orcs at least 2 more to have 8 easy minion to play without spotting recrirement |

You need 4x Goblin Hordes for sure. That’s CRUCIAL to the deck, as well as some way to make the sites underground.
I’d try something like this.
4 Beastly Olog-hai
2 Cave Troll of Moria, Savage Menace
2 Mountain Troll
4 Porter Troll
4 Tower Troll
4 Troll’s Keyward, Keeper of the Beast
2 Watchful Orc
4 Relentless Warg
4 Goblin Hordes
Get 4 trolls in the discard, get an underground site out and voila. 4 more trolls = 16 more twilight = 2 more of those trolls hit the table. |
