Okay, so I know the topic’s been beaten to death, but I just found another interesting theory.
Someone on Yahoo Answers suggested that Bombadil is Tolkien himself.
"Lyric, benevolent, and helpful. At a time where the story needs some gateway from the world familiar to the hobbits and into the world of men and Mordor."
Bad grammar, but interesting idea. |
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true. |

that theory is kinda stupid. I really don’t see the evidence for it. |

I said it was "interesting," not "intelligent." |

Interesting, yes. Correct, not in the least. Tolkien actually compared himself to a few characters, including Beren (the story of Beren and Luthien being based on his own love story), but he never mentioned Bombadil. |

Now I’ve accepted the fact that Bombadil is a mystery character, whose real identity is supposed to be unknown. Like, Don Mclean’s cryptic songs. |

i’ve pretty much thought that he was some sort of dryad.
and there is a part where bombadil says: "i saw the Big people arriving"
and with the Big capitalized, and how the ring doesn’t affect him, i think it is safe to say he is entirely different from the vala and iluvatar. |

What is a dryad? I do, however, agree that he is no vala and is not [of course] iluvatar. He (if that’s what Bombadil is) is a fascinating subject, but I’m pretty sure he’s not the author. |

Dryad = nature spirit. Greek mythology, methinks. |

Hmm, he could be one, but then who is Goldberry? Another nature spirit who "marries" him? |

I thinks when Tolkien wrote about Tom, he had just read Hebrews 7. In that biblechapter, the writer of Hebrews deals with Melchizedek. He says the following:
The meaning of the name Melchizedek is “King of Justice.” But since Salem means “peace,” he is also “King of Peace.” 3 We are not told that he had a father or mother or ancestors or beginning or end.
Just as mysterious. Given a great deal of power, King of Justice and King of Peace, but still we don’t know who he is....just like Tom |
