go go gondor rangers
« on: March 23, 2010, 05:37:42 PM »
i would like to build a ranger deck for movie block.  What has been successful in the past?  I'd like to use the tt rangers, but I also really like the rotk rangers.  Any thoughts?  What has worked for you in the past?  Oh, i would like to include faramir, son of denethor as well as a copy of aragorn so not every character is ring-bound.  anyways, thanks for looking and sorry I don't have anything to work off of.  TT was the block I missed, I was too busy buying relms of the elf-lords.

sweet thanks c-work. stand to arms, arrows thick in the air, and ithilean trap will be great.

jd,

You would definitely need Terrible and Evil in there to cover for all the companions. Maybe some Roll of Thunder...

I don't know. A lot of people run a [Gandalf] splash with Ring-Bound Rangers, and it always seems to mess up their decks in the long run. Grown Suddenly Tall means you miss out on great cards such as Ancient Roads and Boromir, My Brother.

Smeagol, Poor Creature and Follow Smeagol help with cycling and controlling the site path. Thanks c-work for providing two links, but I actually don't really like either of those decks very much. I much prefer the Ring-Bound Rangers deck I run in Towers Block.

If you play vs Nazgul or Dunland, they will quickly become non-roaming unless you have all 3 Gondorian Ranger in play which is nearly impossible.

I would suggest adding Ancient Roads and then swapping Grown Suddenly tall for Deep in Thought (it is easy to have 4 twilight when you have many companions, you can also move a Sword of Gondor from companion to companion until you have 100 twilight tokens).

Also, unlike Gondorian Ranger, Ancient Roads can work with Madril, FA, making him a bit more useful.

so i made a few changes.  I do agree with ket as far as using a splash gandy, but how else do you recommend i discard conditions?
@ sam, good call on the gondy ranger, i didn't read his text close enough.

regardless, i think this is a decent start, but I'm not satisfied.  It meets my want to wound a lot, but it still seems to be missing something...  I'll keep working and see what happens.

Here is the shadow I'd like to use with the ranger deck.

discovered x2
easterling army x2
easterling axeman x3
easterling guard x4
easterling infantry x2
easterling lieutenant x4
easterling polearm x4
easterling trooper x2
easterling skirmisher x2
gathering to the summons x2
vision from afar x3

With [Gondor] Rangers, I think the easiest way to deal with Shadow conditions is to run, run, run! Luckily, you can play most everything that comes to your hand with Rangers, so play it and haul #$&*@!.

In fact, a copy of Last Throw can be a pleasant surprise for a mid-to-late game triple move to keep the pressure on.

I think, in short, that [Gondor] Rangers are a great beginner to intermediate level deck in Movie Block. They are pretty easy for beginners but don't have a lot of upside.

I have to agree, this 1 card can be a game winner in every Gondor deck.

If you're getting rid of the Gondorian Rangers, you probably don't need 3x Ranger's Bow since the only ones who can use it are Faramir and Mablung (although Mablung is really good with it). Maybe ditch one of the Ranger's Bows, or even Faramir's Bow (getting the bow on Mablung sooner might be more helpful than making Faramir an archer).

You can't run rangers with just 5 companions. You will get slaughtered.

Do you realize that if Faramir, Mablung or Madril dies, Ancient Roads won't work? You need to keep some Gondorian Ranger as a backup. I would play 3 GR and 2 AR. You can put Gandalf with Deep in Thought if you want to. You can have more than 30 cards in a Ranger deck. You can also remove Mithril Coat.
