Thranduil's Virtual DC Contest - (Final Count)
« on: May 13, 2008, 11:20:32 AM »
Firstly, before I post any of the concepts or introductions, allow for new contestants and, in fact, continue with the next round, there are just 2 votes which I need to continue - and they are from:

And here are the cards from last round (you didn't think I'd expect you to remember them, did you? :P).

I need your favourite three, as normal.

Fantastic!

Then I shall post the winners of this round and replace the numbers above with their appropriate authors.

1) NK
2) CG
3) DI

GP to them, though we no longer have that little gold symbol. :'(

Now we have to work out who is wishing to continue.

Those who want to see my initial introduction, see this link.

If you want to continue (or join anew) this contest, all you have to do is post below expressing your interest or PM me in the same manner before Monday 19th May.

We will then finish off the final 3 rounds of this contest, and if we still want to continue, I will either find some more FotR cards, or move onto TT, whichever people want.

But, there are some fun rounds before then, so sign up, if you dare!

Personally, I'd prefer this be a whole new contest in the same style, as just ignoring the members that haven't made their way over (yet, I hope) from here on out would be a crime.

That being said, I'm in.
Best regards,
Dáin

If you start again could you at least tell us the top 3 overall who won the old competition. Otherwise i will feel I did it all for nothing.

Thanks.

That's fair enough, lem0n. Might even give out the intended prizes if we start afresh.

But I'll wait until Monday for the poll to reveal people's preferences.

Well, it looks like we are finishing the contest where we left off then. And after that, who knows? ;)

So, now we move onto the next round (and anyone can participate, regardless of previous rounds).

You are either to design One Whom Men Would Follow, or BOTH Swan-Ship of the Galadhrim and Support of the Last Homely House. Though you may ask: why would I design 2 cards when I could design 1? My answer would be that the [Elven] mini-cycle here would be no more work than the single [Gondor] card because the same ideas will be used in both cards, and cycles are a good way to show off good ideas.

Here are the rules for this round:

1) Have the same title (with a (V) attached to the end)
2) Have the same twilight cost and culture - the cards may be events or conditions
3) Have whatever attributes or attribute modifiers you think appropriate
4) Have a different text, maybe similar, but could also be on completely different lines *HOWEVER, each card MUST work in some way with followers, and you may even wish to design them with your Bilbo in mind from last round
5) Have a lore which you want, it's really up to you - you can keep the same lore or put in your own, it doesn't really matter.

So, your card should in the end look a bit like this:

[1]/(0) Title (V) [Culture]
Type
Str: +X
Vit: +Y
Res/Sit: +Z
Text
Lore
1 V 64/65/109

PM me with your entry before Sunday 25th May. Anyone who sends me an entry by that time will be automatically entered. And you might want to make sure that all your PMs are saved by changing your profile options just in case you want to overview the card afterwards.

And so, what is there left but to wish you good luck! 8)

I think you were planning this round for some time, but isn't it ironic that this round is the first at our new location? One might say that this round has the support of the last homely house...  ;)

Because allies are an outdated concept and now we deal with followers. Hence the restrictions for this round.

Also, just because we're making a virtual card doesn't mean the original has to be useless or broken - they're just good targets. There were plenty of SWCCG virtual cards that were useful versions of just as useful originals, just with a different focus of abilities.

No it's cool, a couple of other people also wanted an extension (like AD and SoP) so the new deadline is Tuesday 27th. Gives you a chance to do it on Tuesday lem0n.

And so here are our entries for this round. Slightly fewer than we had at CC, but I suppose that's somewhat inevitable. But some new blood nonetheless.

All contestants must vote, other votes will be most appreciated.

Each person should vote for their favourite 3 in order.

Voting deadline is Saturday 31st May.

Thranduil's Virtual DC Contest - (Starting Round 8!)
« Reply #42 on: May 31, 2008, 03:46:27 PM »
Excellent. Then I announce the winners (and it's a very close round).

1) Mr Lurtzy AND DáinIronfoot
2) sickofpalantirs
3) NappyKorn

So let's give them some gold as we move onto the next round!

(Entries now have names attached if you look at the last post, by the way).

We are now moving into some serious horizontal cycles (ie. similar cards across cultures), which is something that Decipher introduced in the Realms of the Elf Lords to limited success. So, our first cycle is made of the following cards:

Clearly, they are all rubbish cards (except for Terrible as the Dawn which was amazing for the brief period in between the release of Lady Redeemed and her X-ing) and need serious redoing - for good reason, Decipher just didn't make cards like these anymore.

And don't worry, I only want you to make virtual versions of 2 of the above cards (your choice which).

So here are the rules for this round. Your cards must:

1) Have the same title (with a (V) attached to the end)
2) Have the same twilight cost and culture - the cards could make sense as either events or conditions, but if you make a good case for some other type, I won't argue!
3) Have whatever attribute modifiers you think appropriate
4) Have a different text, maybe similar, but could also be on completely different lines *IN FACT: I expect them on different lines - I don't want cards that are magic bullets against certain characters or cultures or anything else. The two cards that you design should be based on the same idea, as the basis of a whole Shadow cycle, and they should try to update these old cultures with new mechanics like: threats, site control, resistance, initiative, lurkers etc. Basically, strategy and mechanics this round are entirely up to you.
5) Have a lore which you want, it's really up to you - you can keep the same lore or put in your own, it doesn't really matter. You may want to change the lores in this case particularly because they are very strongly geared to the characters the original cards are built to combat, but you may not.

So, you're card should look something like this:

(0) Title (V) [Culture]
Type • Sub-type
Str: +X
Vit: +Y
Res/Sit: +Z
Game text.
Lore.
3 V 50/80/85/103/105

So, what is there left to say other than: happy DCing!

Oh yeah, and the deadline will be a bit extended both because this could be quite a difficult (and pivotal) round and because Anvar is away this week. So the deadline is therefore Wednesday 11th June.

Yes you did, but don't worry as it's all cumulative at the end anyway. Winners of individual rounds don't matter.

Great going for a first round, though!

I disagree with that on terrible as the dawn and such a little thing, theyre not amazing, but theyre certainly useful against ARBS.

And don't worry, I only want you to make virtual versions of 2 of the above cards (your choice which).

So the basically the fact youve chosen these particular cards are largely irrelevant, except the tenuous shadow cycle thing, as you want us to make something completely new? Its just im struggling to get your intentions here mate.

Oh yeah, and the deadline will be a bit extended both because this could be quite a difficult (and pivotal) round

Why pivotal?

Well, they are pretty cool titles! ;) And the titles also fit into a tight cycle. Like I made cards with exclamations as titles (like What are We Waiting for?, What Are They?, Curse Their Foul Feet!) into a cycle in my Virtual thread, we have a similar concept here - similar thematic titles that deserve to be in a cycle, but a better one than simple magic bullets.

Why pivotal?
Simply because it's the penultimate round.

Should the cards still be about the same character?
They could be, but I don't want them as magic bullets, ie. they could mention the given character (or different characters) but shouldn't exclusively work against them.

If anyone has questions, don't hesitate to tell me.

Ok I am really sorry but I can't participate in this round. in 12 hours I am leaving for DC to grab BtO and sightsee ;) and I have to mow a lawn, pack, and sleep before then.

I might just MAYBE be able to get one in...but I highly doubt it. I will get back the 11th, and try to get in on the next round.

This looks like an interesting round. Lots of fun ideas ranging from very tight to very loose cycles.

I would urge votes to be on the merit, potential and ideas of the cycle rather than balance or ideas of individual cards. When you're looking at these 2 cards from each person, just start thinking what the other cards in the cycle might look like.

Vote for your favourite 3 as usual.

Voting deadline will be Sunday 15th. And I really need all votes ASAP so that I can press ahead with the final round with the aim of having the final entries on the forum by the 23rd when I go away.

I have to be honest...I think it's a shame that nobody else tied these to the original characters in some way. Apparently that's just me, though. Ah well.

Is it worth pointing out that I encouraged people not to in my instructions for last round?

I'm glad we have all the votes in now. The winners for that round were:

1) Anvar (No. 9)
2) NappyKorn (No. 8)
3) AgentDrake (No. 4)

The names should be up from the last round shortly and the final round ( :'( ) will start either later this evening or tomorrow afternoon (my time).

So now we come to the final round of this virtual contest.

 :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

As I said last round, Realms of the Elf Lords saw the birth of the horizontal cycle, ie. a card with similar themes or mechanics across different cultures. In particular, we have this following one which spanned not only Shadow or Free Peoples but both, making it the first of its kind in LOTR. Unfortunately, the game doesn't lend itself all that well to horizontal cycles like Magic the Gathering does, for example, but nevertheless it's in cycles when a DC-maker's skill is sorely put to the test.

So enough preamble, where are the cards Thran?

As last round, I DON'T want you to make all of them but rather 4. Of these 4, 2 must be Free Peoples and 2 must be Shadow. Which one's you choose, is entirely up to you.

Those 4 cards that you enter should:

1) Have the same title (with a (V) attached to the end)
2) Have the same twilight cost and culture - the cards could make sense as either events or conditions, but if you make a good case for some other type, I won't argue!
3) Have whatever attribute modifiers you think appropriate
4) Have a different text, maybe similar, but could also be on completely different lines NOTE: Some cycles have titles across the cards which are very much the same or explore very similar themes. This is clearly not the case with this cycle. Therefore, the task for this round is not a thematic cycle but rather a mechanics cycle. What I mean by that is that you should use the same mechanics in each card in a similar manner that the originals did. I'm not sure how that sounded for those whom English is not their first language (or for that matter, to English-speaking natives!) so if you have any questions about that, don't hesitate to ask me.
5) Have a lore which you want, it's really up to you - you can keep the same lore or put in your own, it doesn't really matter.

So, your 2 Free Peoples cards should look a bit like this:

[1] Title (V) [Culture]
Type • Sub-Type
Str: +X
Vit: +Y
Res: +Z
Game text.
Lore.
3 V 6/16/33/43/109

[2] Title (V) [Culture]
Type • Sub-Type
Str: +P
Vit: +Q
Res: +R
Game text.
Lore.
3 V 51/76/84/87

Deadline is Sunday 22nd, but I'd really like them as soon as possible. After I've posted the entries, the voting will be somewhat open-ended as I go away on the 23rd, so I really need those cards in on time. And of course, the sooner I get them, the better my comments will be.

And now, for the last time in this contest, happy DCing, and good luck!

So the cards need to be about the same thing?
The short answer: no. As long as each card in your cycle shares its mechanics with the others, the cards can be about whatever you want.

Sorry Thran i have to bow out. Im going on holiday this Saturday until about the 5th July and wont have internet access in Rhodes. Im too busy to come up with 4 DC's before then!

So, Dain, Thran and SoP, its down to you to review for 2 weeks!

I have 3 entries. I really would like them all in time. But, if you want extra time for such an important and tough round, then Anvar has agreed to manage the contest for an extended deadline.

Nevertheless, I'd prefer to get it all done on time.

I have passed on the arrangements to Anvar. He'll now give you comments and post the cards by a deadline sometime later this week. Presumably, he'll post below with some details - this post is just to officially sanction him as the caretaker of this contest while I'm in Greece.

So have fun guys! I'll see you in about 2 weeks! 8-)

Ok, Thranduil very helpfully made me caretaker of this contest before he went away to Greece. Sadly, he forgot that I too was going away for a week... Anyway, I'm back and he isn't, so I'm here again. So far I have entries from:

Thranduil
Agentdrake
Mr. Lurtzy
Myself

The rest of you let's make the deadline this Wednesday, the 2nd of July. Let me know if this causes any problems.

Anvar

Ok, so we have 5 entries for the contest. I don't know if we should run the contest anyway, or wait now until after the summer when regulars will be around again. Since Thranduil is coming back tonight, and may get a chance to look in here tomorrow, I will leave the decision up to him I think.

Thanks to those who have entered.

Well, hello there!

Sorry for disappearing, but now I am back.

Those who have not yet submitted, tell me: how likely is it that you will be able to submit in the near future?

That depends on when Thranduil (and Anvar) show up again. Since neither has been heard from in close to two weeks, I'm getting a little concerned. Like, for their safety.
Best regards,

Give it a little while, yet. Neither seemed to be expecting to be away, though. Two weeks is pushing it, and three weeks is definitely time to get worried.

Unfortunately I still have a crazy few days ahead of me, so I'll have to come back to this on Monday or Tuesday.

Okay, so here's the state of play.

I have entries for the final round from:

ML
micah247
DI
AD
Anvar

Now 5 people doesn't make a spectacular final round, even if I include myself to make 6. This especially considering as there have been consistently 12 people entering every round.

So, this is my final plea! Anyone who has not yet submitted for this contest and wishes to, should do so by Sunday 27th. Similarly, anyone who wants to change (or be reminded of!) their submitted cards should also contact me before said date. If it's been so long that you've already forgotten what this round was about, click on the link in my sig and it will take you to the cards and rules for this round.

"‘At all times they feel the presence of the Ring, drawn to the power of the One.'"
3 V 84

AUTHOR'S NOTES: I tried to stay true to the theme of the originals while still making them something completely new...and hopefully more useful for their respective cultures. Dwarves are good at card drawing, Elves at healing, Nazgûl at thrashing low resistance companions, and [Sauron] Orcs at exerting to do stuff...hence their healing here. I think these would all be very welcome additions to their respective cultures, though hopefully the fact that you likely have to get a little lucky with the revealing keeps them balanced enough.

"'You have been summoned here to answer the threat of Mordor.'"
3 V 16

[1] Might of Numenor (V) [Gondor]
Condition • Support Area
At the start of the fellowship phase, you may exert a [Gondor] Man bearing a hand weapon and add [1] to reinforce a [Gondor] token. Until the end of the turn, you need 1 less card in hand to retain initiative.
"But the lords of Minas Tirith still fight on..."
3 V 43

[2] They Will Never Stop Hunting You (V)[Wraith]

Shadow: Spot a Nazgûl and discard a Shadow card from hand. Until the end of the turn, the Free Peoples player must have 1 additional card in hand to retain initiative.

4 - really original, though I worry over the viability of really shuffling a card into your deck face up and not knowing where it is...
1 - original, fun to build around. Slight concern over power-level as the FP cards seem really BadAt9.
5 - I like the mechanic but feel the Shadow cards are boring and UP compared to the FP cards. If the Shadow cards also worked only in multi-culture shadows, with corresponding boost in power, I would like them better.
"There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace. We've got work to do."

7 Felt they were the most useful and best balanced cards there as a set.
4 Do i detect a bit of Star Wars influence. Anger Fear and Aggression maybe? :P Fun stuff.
1 would have been higher if the shadow cards had a worse penalty as it is felt they were a bit too good.

Well the time has come to pay our last farewells to this contest. But not before the results are finally posted.

For this round, the winner is:

1) Thranduil (#4) - well I don't know who voted for that guy, but I certainly didn't!

Almost everyone else was tied for second place, so I can't be bothered to post all the names. But that shows you how much of a close round it was.

Now, as for the final scores, in order to drag this out as long as possible, let's see the winner of each previous round! :clown:

Round 1 - Shieldmaiden
Round 2 - Lem0nhead
Round 3 - Anvar
Round 4 - Hobbiton Lad
Round 5 - AnxiousChieftain
Round 6 - NappyKorn
Round 7 - NappyKorn
Round 8 - DáinIronfoot and Mr. Lurtzy
Round 9 - Anvar

Looking at my overall totals, there's a clear winner, but then a very closely contested second and third.

In THIRD place, we have (drumroll):

DáinIronfoot and NappyKorn!

both with 90 points. Very close behind was AgentDrake with 85.

In SECOND place, we have (another drumroll):

Lem0nhead!

with 95 points. As I said, very close stuff round here.

But, in the lead with 120 points, we have (the biggest drumroll yet):

ANVAR!

which is a little embarrassing since he was donating the prizes...

So, I now invite Anvar to the scene to discuss what he has for our spectacular winners.

And all that it remains for me to say is thank you to everyone who entered and voted throughout. We saw some fantastic ideas coursing through this contest, and I hope you all enjoyed making and evaluating them! :hey:

And who knows? We may even see another contest somewhere down the line from Thranduil Enterprises ©, though I expect not until the summer has ended.

Thank you all! (If we had the hand clapping smiley, I would have just used it!)

Wow cool second place, quite happy with that as i had a dire ending to this competition. Its scary that NK almost had me when he only came in 1/2 way through and i been going from the start. Kudos NK.

Thanks for a fun contest Thran.  :gp:

And thanks to Anvar for prizes.  :gp:

Cards for NK and Lem0n are on their way.

Dain, I need your address and choice of culture if you want your cards. Gollum is gone now but you still have the following choices:

Dwarf
Elf + Gandalf (1 from each - sorry, don't have that many in these cultures)
Gondor
Isengard
Raider
Rohan
Sauron
Shire
Wraith
