Movie Block Sealed League Decks
« on: December 14, 2012, 11:42:54 AM »
I'm reposting this from Valinor because that board is visible for registered users only and due to problems with registering not all Gemp players can see threads there.

This thread contains decks that will be used during Movie Block Sealed League at Gemp-LotR that starts next week. The league will be 4 series, with each serie adding cards to each player's collection. Everyone will get the following cards:

Serie 1: a Serie 1 Starter deck (player's choice, 3 possibilities), 1 Fellowship of the Ring booster, 1 Two Towers booster, 1 Return of the King booster, 3 booster choices.

Serie 2: a Serie 2 Starter deck (player's choice, 3 possibilities), 1 Mines of Moria booster, 1 Battle of Helm's Deep booster, 1 Siege of Gondor booster.

Serie 3: a Serie 3 Starter deck (player's choice, 3 possibilities), 1 Realms of the Elf-lords booster, 1 Ents of Fangorn booster, 1 Mount Doom booster.

Serie 4: 1 Reflections booster, 5 booster choices.

Booster choice will be limited to Movie Block except Reflections.

I will post starter deck contents in posts below.

You should make some change to Serie 3, deck 1: Ring-bound companions, Isengard orcs

Traitor's Voice requires spotting an Uruk-Hai and the deck has no Uruk-Hai.

One more small comment I would like to add, the Moria and Sauron cultures seems to be underrepresented, while Isengard and Raiders seems a little over-represented. I would suggest turning Serie 1, deck 3: Gondor+Rohan, Uruk-hai into a Moria/Sauron swarm or having Serie 3, deck 3: Rangers and Archers be turned into Moria/Sauron wounding.

Traitor's Voice indeed requires an Uruk-hai. But the deck is available in Serie 3, so if you want to make this card a part of your strategy, you can have enough Uruks to work them into your deck by then, either by taking an Uruk-hai starter one of the previous weeks, or by getting some Uruks from boosters (probably requiring using booster choices on [Isengard]-heavy sets).

As you probably have already seen, all Serie 3 decks were built specifically to be Serie 3 decks, not used on their own, but rather with some cards from previous decks (for example I did not include crowd control cards which are in Serie 1 and Serie 2 decks). What I want to achieve is people thinking about the league as a whole, doing all choices (both decks and boosters) to have them work together. I tried to include multiple trade-offs (for example similar Shadow sides usually have different Free Peoples) and make the choices as non-obvious as possible. Whoever works out this puzzle in a best way, will end up with a strong deck, and I think there are multiple strong combinations, as well as multiple weak ones.

I tried to build Sauron or Moria decks, but could not get a viable one without using rare cards. If you have ideas, post them here, for this league the decks won't change, but based on it how it plays out, there may be some changes when it's played again in a few months' time.

A few. 4 IIRC, neither using any new mechanics. Also some decks have promos which are not printed in any regular set (so technically they are not Movie block as well). I don't think any of those cards will hurt. I added Elven Bow and Dagger Strike to Bloodlines starters for War of the Ring Sealed League and nothing bad happened.

I'm a bit afraid this could be too viable ;) Especially now, straight after TTT league with many people annoyed with the Sauron-driven stupid swarm which is the strongest shadow there.

What if you just put 1 or 2 of them?

So I don't know if this is the right place to post this.  On Gemp, I got the gondor-rohan/uruk hai deck and it's missing the site 7 so I can't play right now.

I think the Gandalf / Southron deck is missing the raider bows.

well.. is it intend to have the booster pack to still include sites outside King's block?  Why not exclude those from the choices so that I won't take up the space for me to get a more useable uncommon card from pack outside king's block....
I got like 6 sites that can't be used already in the first week..

Indeed there are two typos in decklists. Southrons have 4x Southron Spear instead of 2x Spear, 2x Bow, Gondor has 7U335 (King's Tent) instead of 7U355. I'll ask MarcinS to do something to fix this.

Is there a way for you to keep track of how many people select each starter?

But the other companions from deck 2 are not as strong as the one from deck 1 and 3.

Every ring-bearer can help you in some way, you just need to choose the deck you feel will work best.

Deck 1 is the only one to have Sam. And it's the strongest Sam in the game.
Deck 2 has Frodo that is a bit stronger when swarmed.
Deck 3 has Frodo with higher resistance, allowing you to bid more and decide if you want to be ahead from the start of the game or remain safe for one turn longer.

You could have lost the game due to Sam taking the ring. You could have lost due to adding 11 burdens and still not corrupting.

Probably decks are not 100% perfectly balanced - if I tested them too much I would have unfair advantage when playing the league. But they are quite close (definitely closer than some of the Decipher's starters) and choosing what works best is part of the challenge. I decided I did not want set 15 Frodo, now the games I play will prove if it was a good decision (so far I played two games but none of them against the Dwarf/Elf starter).
