Cancelling Ringbearer's skirmish
« on: July 01, 2010, 03:12:33 PM »
I was reading old posts and discovered you couldn't cancel a Ring-bearer's skirmish. When did this rule come into effect? I had been playing with O Elbereth Gilthoniel in my decks (unaware of its errata) and using Severed His Bonds to cancel skirmishes with Frodo RBs  #-o

You can't cancel ring-bearer's skirmishes as of reflections, because of the ARBs. Though, whenever I play, it's allowed, up to towers.

The current rulings from September 7, 2004 mention that rule, so it was some point before that.

Really? My memory's a bit fuzzy, as I stopped playing around towers, but I do remember being able to cancel the ring-bearer's skirmish.

Yep, Return of the King set came out end of 2003.  Wow!  It really has been that long! :-)

Soo..... was there a consensus on this point? Cancelling of the ring-bearer's skirmishes is not allowed? Or only in certain blocks/sets?

My cousins and I play a lot, and generally play a version of Movie Block rules I believe.

Btw, hi and nice to meet you all... been reading these forums for a while, but haven't posted before.

So welcome on the boards officially! As for your question, I agreed with my cousin that you can cancel the Ring-Bearer's skirmish if the Ring-Bearer is Frodo, but officially, you can only cancel skirmishes in FOtR Block, Towers Block and Towers Standard. Oh, and if you're like ket and you wish a Format from sets 1-7, you can also cancel skirmishes there.

My group and I, we played open and allowed for RB cancelling.  We didn't like the fact you couldn't cancel an RB skirmish.  I have since left the darkside and seen the folly of my ways.  However, I do think they should allow certain cards to cancel RB skirmishes.  Namely those that use the phrase, "you may cancel a skirmish involving the RB." I can only think of 2 which do that, o elbereth githoniel and frodo's cloak.

I agree with jdizzy001 --O elbereth can be used with any RB but it's Nazgul specific. Frodo's cloak only cancels a skirmish for him at sites 1-4 before the more critical sites (and afterall you paid 2 twilight for the darn thing). Severed His Bonds Hobbit Stealth and others are too universal and cancel skirmishes with too easy a cost. Boromir's Gauntlets are lame because Isildur or Boromir RBs could effectively cancel their skirmish at the final site if conditions allow = laaaaaame. I can see why a moratorium is needed gainst cancelling skirmishes, but it's a pity O Elbereth Gilthoniel and Frodo's Cloak got thrown under the bus with the others.

So if we play strictly by the rules, since we definitely use cards (and often sites) past Towers block, we CANNOT cancel skirmishes with any ringbearer with any of those cards?

But if we decide to slacken up a bit... one option is that Frodo is ok but ARB are not, and another option is to only allow cards that state "Ringbearer" specifically. Thanks guys for those helpful answers.

I'll probably talk to my one cousin about it and see what he wants to do. We play with a couple family members, but he and I are most serious and tend to look up all the rules, and make decisions between formats when necessary. I'd love to play with more people, but outside of my extended family I know no one who'd play.
