Bant's Anti-Toast Aggro
« on: December 16, 2008, 08:12:53 AM »
I've been having some troublesome 5-color decks showing up regularly at FNM. While I am a publicly-declared Faeries player so they don't bother me a lot, other people might be being crushed by them on a regular basis so I designed a "cheap" (only really expensive stuff is Reflecting Pools, the rest you can get cheap) deck that can really crush it. It also helps against other decks, like BG Elves, but it does not have a very good matchup against Faeries pre-board, but after sideboarding, it's fair game. So here it is:

BANT'S ANTI-TOAST AGGRO (60 cards)

Mainboard:

24 Lands:
4 Reflecting Pool
4 Seaside Citadel
3 Vivid Grove
3 Vivid Meadow
4 Wooded Bastion
3 Mystic Gate
3 Yavimaya Coast

20 Creatures:
4 Safehold Elite
4 Gaddock Teeg
4 Steward of Valeron
4 Rhox War Monk
4 Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers

16 Other Spells:
2 Hindering Light
2 Negate
4 Bant Charm
4 Barkshell Blessing
4 Shield of the Oversoul

Sideboard:
4 Kitchen Finks
2 Cloudthresher
1 Negate
2 Pithing Needle
3 Firespout
2 Condemn
1 Loxodon Warhammer

The deck is pretty straightforward and fun to paly with. The idea is to make your opponent unable to deal with your threats quickly, and a lot fo them play defensive roles as well for aggro-on-aggro match-up. The deck has decent lifegain and some counters to fight monored, and more life out of the sideboard with Finks, which also help in some aggro match-ups like Kithkin. Firespout from the side helps dealing with Fae, but is equally good VS. Kithkin or token-based aggro, and Comdemn answers annoying Demigods as well as being a speed-bump against fast aggros. Warhammer is a tie-breaker in aggro match-ups and also helps against Faeries, getting around the annoying tokens. However, the real star is maindecked Gaddock Teeg, annoying the crap out of control decks all over and stopping Ajani, Garruk and Sarkhan Vol, not to mention Profane Command. Teeg is just not as useful VS. Faeries, although he's increased his usefulness since msot builds will not only play Cryptic Command, but Broken Ambitions as well.
I'd like to pack Chameleon Colossus, but his lack of interaction with the deck advises me against it, and Thresher is simply plain better as a beatstick and against Faeries (Colossus can't be blocked by the tokens, but costs 4 at sorcery speed, Thresher WIPES OUT the tokens, for the same 4, at instant speed).

It controls control! Teeg = bwahaha.

Would Guttural Response be better than Needle in the SB?

I thought about it, but then again, the spells I'd liek to counter with it Teeg shuts down. Remove Soul is not too big of a problem. So I instead went with another Negate on the side (counters Bitterblossom, it can only be good!) and Pithing Needle to shut down manlands, annoying Story Circles and troublesome Planeswalkers. Not to mention it shuts down other miscellaneous stuff. I'm still not entirely sold out on the Needle, though, I might switch it for Guttural Response if Removel Soul and Agony Warp start crippling me too much.
