Skirmish question
« on: March 30, 2010, 02:04:29 PM »
Say Gimli is the ringbearer and he has gimli's helmThe Witch-king, Lord of the Nazgul wins a skirmish.  Does Gimli take one wound or two?  I'm thinking he takes one wound, but I am not certain.

Then a follow up question.  If the skirmish was between the Witch-king and Gimli.  Would he just take one wound, or two or three.  Again, I think it's just one, but not quite sure.

One wound, in both cases. During each skirmish phase, the maximum number of wounds Gimli can take is one. Whenever Gimli takes a wound in a skirmish phase while wearing Gimli's Helm, he becomes unable to take any further wounds until the end of that skirmish phase.

The part I was unclear on though, is that the witch-king's text says if he wins a skirmish. One way of reading that is that the skirmish is over when he does his thing, and since the skirmish is over, Gimli isn't taking a wound in a skirmish so he can take extra wounds.  That didn't sound right to me, but wanted to check.

When a character wins a skirmish, it's still part of the skirmish phase. Skirmish phases are just like any other phases, they have the following sequence:
1. Skirmish phase begins.
2. Skirmish actions.
3. Skirmish is resolved:
3A. The winning side is determined. <-The Witch-king's response comes here.
3B. Wounds are placed (and/or characters killed) accordingly.
4. Skirmish phase ends.

This is just like:
1. Fellowship phase begins.
2. Fellowship actions (and cards played).
3. Fellowship moves.
4. Fellowship phase ends.

1. Archery phase begins.
2. Archery actions.
3. Archery total determined and wounds placed.
4. Archery phase ends.

1. Assignment phase begins.
2. Assignment actions.
3. Assignments are made.
4. Assignment phase ends.

1. Regroup phase begins.
2. Regroup actions.
3. Players reconcile and the fellowship may move.
4. Regroup phase ends.

It's always:
1. Phase begins.
2. Phase actions (including playing cards if it's the Fellowship/Shadow phase).
3. Phase mechanisms (e.g. archery wounds or the fellowship moving), if any (Shadow and Maneuver have none), occur.
4. Phase ends.

A skirmish phase doesn't end until all actions triggered by winning/losing that skirmish have resolved, including the bit on LotN.
