Shards of Narsil Wraiths/ Easterling Corruption
« on: March 11, 2011, 05:11:25 PM »
So this is how I've been running [Gondor] Wraiths recently- it's an interesting variation.

Ringbearer- Frodo, Hope of Free Peoples with The One Ring, ATAR

Freeps:
Aragorn, Driven By Need
King of the Dead, Oathbreaker x2
Shadow Host
Oathbreaker x2
Sleepless Dead x2
Cursed of Erech x2
The Shards of Narsil x4
Still Sharp x4
Banner of the White Tree x3
Might of Numenor x3
NfFatRoD x4
Swept Away x3
Let Folly Be Our Cloak x2

Shadow:
Easterling Captain x2
Easterling Regiment x2
Heavy Axeman
Easterling Footman x3
Easterling Skirmisher x4
Easterling Lieutenant x4
Easterling Guard x4
Easterling Polearm x4
Gathering to the Summons x4
Vision From Afar x3
Shotgun Enquea x2

4x Shards seems a bit excessive, but I've found that in this deck the card is really useful. Usually it'll hold extra copies of Swept Away, Wraiths until I can afford the threats, and a number of the events. Still Sharp gives me some much-needed damage +1 bonuses. I'm not sure if Might of Numenor is the right card for healing in this deck though.
The shadow is kind of old-fashioned. It's more fun than Captain Crunch though, because of the event combos. An actual corruption might be unrealistic, but there's some potential for beatdown in this deck.
Your thoughts?

My advice is to drop a companion or two (you have 11 and you can't have that many in play at one time anyways) and add a couple Stronger and More TerribleMight of Numenor isn't amazing as you have a reasonable chance of getting a card that doesn't have high twilight cost.  Also unless I'm mistaken you can only remove one wound from each companion.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.

He has 9 playable companions. I think he is fine having backup copies of the important characters and he can always stack the extras on Shards.

Might of Numenor is easily the best post-Fellowship healing card in the game. And it is perfect with Wraiths when you don't need too many heals anyways.

You might consider Drawing His Eye. Whenever you get it early, stack it on The Shards of Narsil. Then, late game, take all the copies (you'll probably run lots of [Gondor] companions) and use them to discard your opponents key shadow cards and run for site 9. This is an extreme combo if you can also raise the move limit.

Credit for this goes to jmccarthy. I've seen and felt him use it to great effect.

I was considering replacing it with 3-4 Citadel of Minas Tirith, the reason being that I can remove threats with Aragorn and then heal him immediately. Wraiths aren't meant to win every skirmish however, which is why I stuck with Might of Numenor for now. I'm still not sure though...

Are you starting with Aragorn, DbN or 2x Oathbreaker? I also like to use Isildur, BoH as a ringbearer with Wraiths because his text can provide me with some exertions (especially early game), but here Frodo seems a better choice as you're better protected against corruption, you're running 9 comps anyway so swarm is harder to accomplish and you get some extra threat removal.

As far as shadow goes, you might try with a copy of Fierce in Despair. It can be a good combo with Easterling Regiment, although it's hard to make it happen.

Just some random thoughts.
