Britains Drinking Culture
« on: August 30, 2008, 09:40:55 AM »
Not looking for any sympathy here, but I guess I just wanted to bring this up as I'm sure it will spark some debate about the state of the UK's youth culture.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning I was attacked in my car by 3 lads who assaulted me and damaged my car. I didnt know these lads and wouldnt recognise them if I saw them again. They didnt rob me or steal my car, they just asaulted me.

All 3 were highly intoxicated, and probably are every weekend/night. At least one was under the drinking age but were still drunk out in public. My best efforts to avoid this sad state of our youth culture that has developed eventually caught up with me.

PS. The police have arrested the suspects and all have confessed so it should be a formality now. Thanks for your concern

Eech. I can't say I know much about Britain's youth culture, but that's not the norm, is it? I mean, from what I understand it's still pretty common, and it obviously has a significant enough presence to call it a culture, but...?

BTW, out of a semi-morbid curiosity, were they relatively nice while they were sober?

Ah, right... dunno why I assumed that you were there when they confessed. Dumb assumption.

I've heard from people that have been to Britain that crime is higher rates there then most of the US.

English robbery victimization rate was 1.4 times the U.S. rate (7.6 per 1,000 population versus 5.3) (figure 1)
English assault victimization rate was 2.3 times the U.S. rate (20.0 versus 8.8) (figure 2)
English burglary victimization rate was 1.7 times the U.S. rate (82.9 per 1,000 households versus 47.5) (figure 3)
English motor vehicle theft victimization rate was 2.2 times the U.S. rate (23.6 versus 10.8) (figure 4).

I think that part of the reason why is because European society is in constant change and turmoil, whereas America isn't so much. Even after the 50s, 60s, and 70s, American culture is beginning to shift back to where it was before, as you can see in the graphs by Britain's crime rates rising whilst US crime rates are dropping.

But...I think the real reason is that you guys are closer to the Parisians than we are, so they rub off on you more. ;)

LOL nicely said turin, you did 4get to mention the gun crime figures NB, of which as far as im concerned the rest pale into comparison.

But seriously the alcohol abuse in the UK is not only insanely out of control and annoying but completely pointless. The only reason they get this drunk is to get that drunk. I mean people actually go out with that intention. How retarded. Im sick of it in this country something needs be done.

The A&E would be 1/2 as full if pubs didnt sell 40% proof drinks at 3 for 1 or whatever daft promotion they are running just to encourage the sale of what ultimately will take the time and resources up of the police for hours on end every night of the week.

Sheesh it really p***es me off.
