There's been a lot of different Grixis builds running around, but this one got into Top 8 of a Grand Prix, I think, and I made a few changes (namely not wanting to spend $80 on Jace, The Mind Sculptor). If Jace was in, I'd take out 3x See Beyond for him. I went 4-1 last night with this, losing to Nayavine. Vines screw this deck, hard. I can see why Relic of Progenitus is played.

Maindeck Choices:

First of all, Calcite Snapper wins games. I was really astounded at how awesome it was. It's epic on the mirror, with shroud. It can also block Bloodbraid or Thrinax no problem and kill Wall of Omens by itself.

Manlands also win games. I've won multiple times with pretty much solo tar pit. I'm not impressed with Lavaclaw reaches though.

The deck is definitely more creature kill than counter, and while 2x deprive might seem low, I never regretted drawing them but never saw them too much. Into the Roil covers most of what Lightning Bolt can't handle, so I didn't feel the need for a full set of Terminate either, although it might have helped.

Cruel wins games. But I think three might leave one stuck in your hand too often. And Earthquake can be a sort of win-con as well (especially since a 3dmg Quake can wipe a lot of boards and leave your Calcite Snappers around) I think we have enough win without 3 Cruels clogging our hands.

See Beyond is probably the best, cheapest card draw around right now (maybe M11 changes that). But Jace would be better, sure. I just really want to build without him.

Spreading Seas is a perfect example of why Grix became good - to beat Jund. And it does that. It's also relevant against Bant, it stops Colonnade too. It's mainboard acceptable because it replaces itself.

Sideboard Choices:
Duress is super good against any Walker-based control deck.
Jace kills Jace for one mana less.
Smother is good against RDW (and R/W Kiln Fiend, which is pretty much RDW) and it can help against Next Level Bant or Mythic Conscription.
More Deprives for control v. control matchups where the creature kill is dead weight.
Flashfreeze makes great counter against Jund and Nayavine.
Consume the Meek is an odd one-of, but it's nice to have another board wipe alongside Earthquake that doesn't deal damage to my face.

Although this did pretty well, I'm not impressed with some things. Blightning got boarded out a lot... while it is card advantage, it doesn't handle threats on the board, which is what this deck needs. I'm looking at Consuming Vapors... creature kill and lifegain with Rebound seems awesome, but it's dead against a lot of decks with weenies.
The land base worked pretty well but Lavaclaw Reaches just wasn't impressive as a manland, I never wanted to tap out with this deck. Maybe more Summits are better. Spreading Seas also got boarded out a lot (maybe there just isn't enough Jund in my meta) but I think something better could go main (at least for me) because I don't see 3-6 Jund decks topping my local player group, unlike most PTQs. Vine decks are getting bigger (whether Jund, Naya, or Bant) and so is Avenger of Zendikar. This deck needs answers to those.

Thoughts?

Well, at first glance, I'd probably up terminate to 4, and lose one Into the Roil. This gives you an extra DEFINITIVE out against creatures, and combined with the fact that you have 3 Calcite Snappers instead of the usual 2, and that you have 2 Earthquakes instead of the usual 1, this lets you move Jace Beleren to the main, fighting Jace-based decks by playing yours a turn earlier, and also makes for a better card-draw spell than See Beyond. This also adresses the issue that you won't tap out turn two, leaving yourself open to Putrid Leech, which WILL screw you over (hence, 4 Bolts).
I think you pretty much nailed the rest, and Lavaclaw Reaches is good to bait out Spreading Seas in case you want to win on the back of Tar Pit, and ALSO if the game goes long enough that you're both stretched thin, since it can take out a pretty big chunk of life out of an opponent. This also means you have a way of beating Howling Mine decks, as you have permanent threats to keep swinging, forcing them to spend their fogs and then knocking their life in large chunks, so I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss its merits.
Moving on to the board, I understand Consume the Meek, and it really IS goo at what it does, but their main usefulness (knocking out manlands) you can accomplish with Seas, so I'd cut it for a singleton Consuming Vapors. Removes 2 guys, give you a little life cushion (considering your removal suite, you can narrow it down to make at least one profitable use of Vapors) and is INSANE against Polymorph decks. You can also lose a Smother (you removal kills pretty much every target it'd be used on), leaving 3 open slots in which you can fit in 2 Relic of Progenitus if Vengevine is giving you a headache, and probably another singleton, or a secon Vapors, or the Into the Roil we removed. OR, leave in Smother if you like it. Or Bituminous Blast?

Good stuff, thanks. I'll try it out that way.

My only problem with Bituminous Blast is that it has some horrible cascades in this deck, namely Earthquake and Deprive.

Ob Nixilis is my Grixs winner, as well as Cruel Ultimatum. And Banefire, for the mirror matchup.
