This is something close to my heart.  So I was wondering what everybody's opinion on Computer strategy games is, i.e. RTS, like Age of Empires, Total War, Empire Earth, and the like.

Age of Empires II is about as good as they get.

Red Alert for the story line.

I've only played Tiberian Sun in the CaC series, I didn't like it that much. AoE2 is a classic, but 3 improved it considerably.

Dune 2: Battle For Arakis (original DOS version). All Time.

Warcraft 2: The Tides of Darkness & expansion The Dark Portal are excellent for their time.

Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising at the moment. Has awesome online multi-player as well as a decent campaign mode.

Tiberian Sun was probably the worst.

But if you want of all time, Transport Tycoon.

I am th only guy who still plays Age of Empires 1? With the expansion, it's a really cool game - easy to understand, but not too easy to win against good a AI.

I love AoEII, still play it now and then. I recently got stuck to Transport Tycoon again. I just love to see the trains and the planes going over the screen, making me a gazzilion dollars, haha.

For multiplayer fun, nothing beats Age of Empires III with both expansions, I find. Starcraft is balanced but I got really tired of it--the graphics, the jerklike people who I find play it, and the overall playstyle, which tends to be "rush and kill them" all the time. Age III's levelling home cities give you a reason to keep playing multiplayer aside from the matches themselves. Plus it's diverse and dynamic. I just wish they added European/African/Mideast maps to it, since they have the Americas and Asia represented.

For single player epic missions, I love LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth II, for single player stories and mission balance nothing, NOTHING beats Age of Empires II. Its historical campaigns are what got me interested in history. Or....if you're thinking strategy as in parties/use of powers, Baldur's Gate II or Dragon Age: Origins. Lots of tough fights in both, and key decisions to make when you pause the game.
A wizard is never late...nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.
