Beyond LotR DC
« on: May 11, 2010, 07:32:31 PM »
Awhile back I posted some thoughts on properties that would be awesome using LotR mechanics.

http://natewinchester.wordpress.com/2008/08/04/lotr-tcg-tie-in/

Here's my summary:

Eragon – No surprise here. Since the story rips off LOTR anyway, of course the imitation will work with the game. Now let's think about it no more.

World of Warcraft – Since the actual card game ended up ripping off Magic: The Gathering so much, I'm surprised they didn't try just ripping off LOTR since it would have worked better. Players would get to form a "party" and explore Azeroth and beyond. Rather than "shadow" cards, opponents get to play "mobs" that try to make things difficult. There could even have been shadow cards that allowed the player parties to fight each other in a PvP style. A game more fun and faithful to the source no?

InuYasha – With all due respect to Upper Deck and their InuYasha TCG, the LOTR game engine better captures the feel of the show in my opinion. After all, you have a part with a "Jewel Bearer" (ring-bearer) exploring various locations (sites). Instead of the twilight pool, we could even have the "shard pool". Actions the good guys take gather shards (add to the pool) and actions the bad guys take steal shards (take from the pool) as a cost.

Now before we get ahead of ourselves... I propose we consider the following first:
1) Can you think of any other properties that would work great with LotR format?
2) Post some dream cards (1 freep, 1 shadow, 1 site or ring knock off I say).
3) ???
4) Profit!

Actually, I don't know where to go after 2, but I'm thinking why not see about a few 2 player sets or whatever.
But who says Frodo can't fight the Lich King?  Let's break the mold a little.

I'm reserving this post for some WoW and InuYasha ideas.

Eragon didn't rip all that much off lotr, it did rip off star wars majorly though plot wise. The first book parallels a new hope almost perfectly.

except there wasn't a huge planet killing spaceship bearing down on them

but other then that, yeah

Thats like in the eragon movie, there's this shot of eragon staring at a sunset and it's the exact same pose and angle that luke had in a new hope

Focus people!

Though of course for Eragon:TCG, it would be "dragon-rider" (with a special dragon card) instead of ring-bearer.

Just change all the "Arwen" cards to "Arya" and we have a whole set ready to go! XD
