You know, he might just be pressing Alt + D. That's the shortkey for "play duplicate". If he is indeed pressing ctrl + D, he may have switched the functions somehow or his keyboard might be screwed.

Also, on the note of card number. GCCG decklist always shows you a number. It's on top of the decklist. That number shows you the number of cards that are in your deck. You can always subtract 2 from that number (Ringbearer and The One Ring) and then divide it by 2. The number you get will tell you how many Shadow/FP cards your deck has. Note that the number of cards in your deck must always be even. If it's not, you're missing a card on one side. It's easiest to check legality of the deck to see on which side are you missing that card.
Some days you're the statue, and some days you're the pigeon.

That CTRL-D would be your friend pushing ALT-D instead. ALT-D is clone, and is not used in LotR, but *is* used in some other card games.

As for the deckbuilder? It's OK in a pinch, but I would recommend using Zorbec's, which is substantially better. Or SdA. There's probably a way to count, but the syntax wouldn't be worth the effort.
