Hobbit movie
« on: June 26, 2021, 09:33:24 PM »
I really wanted to enjoy the 3 films, and to honestly believe that there could realistically be 3 films, and I suppose I did at least do the former... just.  What I found most disappointing was that almost all of the additions to spin it out another 2.5 hours were all so lame.

One more thing: where was the cool score in the second and third films?  LotR had some great tunes, and the dwarven theme from the first  was quite catchy, too.  Why was it never replayed (or even replaced) in the other films?  That must be my biggest gripe with number 2, which otherwise was my favourite of the three.

I have much of the same thoughts. Sir Peter Jackson nailed it with The Lord of the Rings ("My friends, you bow to no one.", "I can't carry it, but I can carry you!", "So do all who see such times...") with a few complaints. (Aragorn and Frodo's combined is so miniscule when compared to the stairs in Moria, why would leaning forward make a lick of difference?!) And Howard Shore pumped out some of the greatest motion picture soundtrack music ever. Like, legitimately in my top three. It was just a fantastic overall movie.

But not The Hobbit. The music was generic (except the sweet dwarven theme used in number 1), the runtime stretched, and the emotion missing. It was TLOTR but worse in every way. One good thing, however, did come out of it: The Last Goodbye. I dare you to listen to that song without tearing up.

Back when I watched the first one, shortly after it came out, I liked it. I think I was a bit nostalgic tho. The other 2 I didnt care about, the production is awful, too much CGI is the main offender for me. The movies look like #$&*@!, there's a certain glow everywhere and the lightning everywhere is fake as #$&*@!.

There's a number of fan cuts out there where people have trimmed down all three movies into one or two, usually while also doing things like tweaking the score (PJ for some reason threw out a lot of the music that was produced and later released on the official soundtrack).  Could always give those a try, they almost universally cut out things like the love triangle, dol guldur, and extended CGI fight scenes, depending on the tastes of the author.
