Movie Block Strategy List
« on: July 25, 2022, 09:09:39 AM »
This is a (hopefully) comprehensive list of all Movie Block strategies. If you have any strategies to add, or any (helpful) criticisms of the strategy rundowns, please reply so I can update and improve this list. I'm sure more strategies have fallen through the cracks than FOTR or TS, so it's probable that I'll be adding more as more people discover the list.

If you're new to the game and looking for strategies, hopefully this thread can be of use to you.
Here is a link to more formats: More Strategies

In addition, here are some lists from the 2004 Worlds Tournament: https://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php?topic=6620.0

Free Peoples

[Dwarven]

Preparations Stacking
Uses lots of [Dwarven] events, stacks them on Preparations, then plays them back with Sindri, Dwarven Lord. Often uses Gimli, Feared Axeman for protection. Often melded with other [Dwarven] Strategy.
Ranking: Tier 1
Strong vs: Beatdown, Corsairs
Weak vs: Wounding, Killing Gimli, Discarding Preparations
Pairs well with: Shadows that have inherent cycling, such as Moria, Corsairs, or Ninja Gollum.
Example deck: Dwarf-Gondor

Self-Mill
Uses Dunharrow Plateau, Ever My Heart Rises, and/or Realm of Dwarrowdelf to discard cards off a massive draw deck. Often uses Gandalf, Greyhame to retrieve companions. May use Cirdan, The Shipwright and a good amount of [Elven] Events as a bonus.
Ranking: Tier 2
Strong vs: Discard, Beatdown
Weak vs: Condition removal, Too Great and Terrible
Pairs well with: A shadow that can pull cards back from the discard pile, such as Corsairs, Nazgûl with Morgul Squealer, and Moria.
Example decks: Ever My Heart Rises/Greyhame, Realm of Dwarrowdelf MOVIE

Tank
Plays a few dwarves and tanks them up. Usually tries to choke the twilight pool.
Ranking: Tier 1
Strong vs: Beatdown, Orcs if teched right
Weak vs: Swarm, Morcs
Pairs well with: Shadows that need or benefit from cycling, such as Morcs, Nazgûl Corruption, and Sauron Strategies.
Example deck: My Old Dwarves / Morcs deck

Discard
Dwarven tank, but with emphasis on Dwarven Axe and Nobody Tosses a Dwarf. Usually paired with Sauron Discard.
Ranking: Tier 2
Strong vs: small draw decks
Weak vs: swarm, EMHR decks, opponent not playing minions
Pairs well with: Sauron Discard
Example deck: Dwarves/Sauron Discard

[Elven]

Archery
Plays Elves and Elven bows, and uses various cards to boost Legolas, Greenleaf's vitality. May use Blades Drawn to counter Enduring minions. Usually melded with another Elven strategy.
Ranking: Tier 2
Strong vs: Swarm, Sauron
Weak vs: Corsairs, Enduring Nazgûl
Pairs well with: a Shadow that won't be holding a lot of cards. Doesn't pair well with bomb strategies.
Example deck: Elf Archery/Enduring Nazgûl

Elvents
Uses [Elven] events to discard conditions, heal, and boost strength. Often uses Lady Redeemed for useless events. Cirdan provides a use for the events in the discard pile. Sometimes uses Echo of Luthién and Ever My Heart Rises with a large draw deck.
Ranking: Tier 1
Strong vs: Beatdown, conditions, corruption
Weak vs: Archery, swarm
Pairs well with: Strategies that pull cards from the discard and cycle well. You want to also ve able to toss excess Elvents. Corsairs and Southrons are sometimes used.
Example deck: Lady Redeemed

Telepathy
Uses Gandalf, Manager of Wizards and Nenya, Ring of Adamant to stack the top of the deck, then kills minions with Glorfindel, RiW and Forearmed. Usually melded with Elvents.
Ranking: Tier 1
Strong vs: beatdown
Weak vs: Wounding, Too Great and Terrible, killing Gandalf
Pairs well with: a shadow with expensive minions, and one that can force a stop. Besiegers and Nazgûl are particularly effective.
Example deck: Telepathy

Echo of Luthién
Uses a large draw deck and card draw to fuel Echo of Luthién. May utilize Glimpse of Fate with the initiative loss caused by EoL. Sometimes used in conjunction with [Dwarven] Self-Mill. May also use Mallorn-Trees to stack the bottom of the deck.
Ranking: Tier 2
Strong vs: Beatdown
Weak vs: direct wounding, killing Arwen, discard
Pairs well with: shadows that can pull from the discard, and that can cycle and still kill. Corsairs or Morcs are used often.
Example deck: Echo of Luthien

Rainbow Wounding
Uses a rainbow of cultures with various wounding tricks with Legolas, Greenleaf and Elrond, HtGG as a base. Usually uses Preparations/Slaked Thirsts as a counter to Grima, CC, and almost always uses Eowyn, LoI for extra power.
Ranking: Tier 2
Strong vs: Beatdown, Nazgul
Weak vs: Archery, Ally Hate, Multiculture hate
Pairs well with: a bunch of shadows. Fast cycling ones help you set up cleaner, but you can also cycle well if you use Elven Sword or Don't Look At Them.
See Also: A Rundown of Rainbow Wounding on the Wiki
Example deck: Rainbow Wounding

[Gondor]

Noble Leaders
Uses Boromir, Faramir, Denethor, and Aragorn for tokens on Noble Leaders, then usually sets up other tank companions like Elendil, The Tall. May use Gandalf or [Elven] allies for support.
Ranking: Tier 1
Strong vs: beatdown, wounding
Weak vs: conditions, corruption
Pairs well with: a shadow with at least decent cycling. The fellowship sets up fast with Denethor, so it's not imperative.
Example deck: Noble Leaders with Elven support

Last Throw/Drawing His Eye
A clever variant on Noble Leaders that aims to use Denethor, Lord of Minas Tirith at Beacon of Minas Tirith to draw four cards, then play nothing, leaving the opponent with an excess of cards and a shallow twilight pool. Then at site four, they play at least 2x Drawing His Eye to filter Shadow cards out of the opponent's hand, then use Narsil+Elendil and Last Throw to run to site 9. Very tough to beat once rolling. Credit for the idea goes to jAgorn on GEMP.
Ranking: Tier 1
Strong vs: beatdown, archery, swarm
Weak vs: corruption
Pairs well with: a shadow that can clog the opponent's hand, and is enough to slow them down until you can run. Here he uses Advance Orcs.
Replay: https://play.lotrtcgpc.net/gemp-lotr/game.html?replayId=jAgorn$8l0majmhmdpifcq2

Ranking: Tier 3

What I am missing here is the combination of halves that make a much better (or much worse) whole. If you combine SFTF with Moria for example you get an excellent deck thinning engine so your swarm is much more effective.

In general people often focus too much on single sides as strategy and instead focus on what works best together.

That's actually a really good criticism I didn't even think about that. Hmmm, I'll have to figure out some way to say, ok, this strategy pairs well with x, y, and z.

Random thoughts:

The Smeagol, Always Helps / Don't Look At Them package is missing. It's not a whole deck unto itself but it's a notable strategy that often appears in Rainbow Wounding or Shire wounding decks and occasionally appears elsewhere (especially with initiative shenanigans).

Rohan have an archery deck, the Merry's Sword deck, and a tank deck in Movie. None of them are great but they're strats to be aware of.

Wraiths are reasonably common but not good.

I've never actually seen a dedicated/primarily Gondor initiative deck.

Glimpse of Fate is key to Telepathy, almost more than the actual telepathy cards.

Corsairs are missing from a lot of the Freeps matchups. Decks like DH are in part suppressed by Corsairs.

Durin's Secret folds to any deck that can run harder.

The Tale of the Great Ring merits special mention in the weaknesses of the swarm decks that can't handle it easily. (Moria, Isenorcs, stupid swarm).

Stupid Swarm is missing.

Straight Nazgul beatdown (usually with Morgul King) exists in this format. It's not top tier but it's better than a lot of the rogue decks listed here.

Initiative Morcs is overrated at 5/10. It feels really good when it goes off but it's very unreliable. Holding cards doesn't help much against it because STTF will gain init on any explosive turn anyway.

Sauron Uruks are missing. Uses Rank and File, often combines with Roaming Orcs. less often other random Sauron or Isen strats.

It's probably worth mentioning that Moria Navy is an example of an Under Foot swarm deck in the Under Foot swarm description. Also mention Saruman's Snows and the fact that they usually go off at site 8-9 with both decks.

Initiative Corruption is AKA Turbo Corruption, especially when it runs Ulaire Otsea, RIT to play IWTBF.

Thanks for the reply, Cease. I was expecting a plethora to be missed, so I'll get to work on those. I'm also trying to add pairing advice to the list on top of that, so it might be a bit before I update it.
He who breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.
