Allllllllll right...
« on: November 13, 2008, 06:26:50 PM »
You crazy people - what with your positive comments and support throughout my Lands of Shadow set - have influenced me to design another set based around the same principle: giving subcultures the strength to flourish *without* the normal set of keywords.

My first idea is to focus on developing some new Free Peoples mechanics as a nice counterbalance to my previous set which has been Shadow-heavy.

The question for you, my allies, is to help me settle on some cultures. I want a fair mixture of already-done themes - like Ents, for example - to apply to this new design philosophy as well as brand-new subcultures to bring into the game... if any more exist.

So. I ask the question: What Free Peoples cultures should appear in this new set?

Definitely the [Gandalf] culture because of Ents and Huorns, maybe some [Shire] culture, it would be interesting to explore the Buckland and Bree aspects of the story as Decipher never did, perhaps some [Gondor] culture as well, knights of Dol Amroth anyone?

The Woses, Erkenbrand, Tom Bombadil, the Rangers of Arnor, Southern Gondor.

I might think of a few more themes later! ;)

definitly knights of dol amroth. I love dol amroth. Imrahil is probably my favorite TCG card ever.
and you need to make a kick butt version of imrahil...perhaps several kick butt versions.
I mean, this is one of 3 people who escape pelonor unwoudned...he should be AWESOME!
anyway
aside from that, more of the gondor people who came to help minas tirith, huorns, woses, bree, bombadil and 'berry.
dunedain...definitly dunedain. maybe some more elrohir and elladan as well?

Grey Company stuff, although I think you were doing that in your other set already. Dol Amroth knights sound cool. Definitely Bombadil.

Ahh! So many good ideas!

I've begun consolidating various materials into a cardlist, tentatively titled Lands of Not-Shadow. The Southern Kingdom of Gondor is definitely in this set, as are cards to help fill-out the subcultures and themes I introduced in my current set.

I'm going to bring Erkenbrand into the game again, along with his followers. Woses... maybe. This does feel like the start of a good set, I dare say.

I'm not too sure about Tom Bombadil. Really, Decipher's take on him is about as close as you can get... if I did anything it would be him as non-character cards (like "Tom's Resolution" and "Tom's Direction"), which would be the same for Goldberry. That doesn't excite me much. They're just as uncardable as they are unfilmable...

Gate Troll, I like your idea about the "rest" of the Hobbits. But how could that be pulled off outside of making followers - a card type I'm pretty much adamantly against.

If I include Bree in this set I'd form it into a complete subculture. But there are three cultures it could easily fall into: [Gandalf], [Gondor], and [Shire].

After putting considerable thought into it, I still can't decide what culture Bree should fall into. [Gandalf] would work easiest since it already has characters like Barliman Butterbur and tons of Men support cards, though some split between [Gondor] and [Shire] would make much more thematic sense.

In Lands of Shadow I've tried to write each card to represent as closely as possible what transpires in book and film. That's why the new "Gondor Wraiths" appear as FP cards in the [Wraith] culture. It forces two cultures to work together which is what happens in the story. For that reason I'd like to put the village of Bree into this new set as both [Gondor] and [Shire], using some unloaded keyword like Breelander to tie them together.

Or maybe Bree should fall completely into the [Shire] culture, since their contact with Gondor is all but dead during the War of the Ring. I actually like this the most so far of the three options.

Any suggestions or criticisms?

Having [Shire] culture men would be a little weird, but I'm sure you could do it. I'd like the [Gondor] / [Shire] split, myself.

Personally, I'd prefer [Gandalf] for Bree, with perhaps some Men and even Hobbits thrown in. (Yes, [Gandalf] Hobbits. How fun would THAT be?)

But I can see the case for the [Shire] / [Gondor] split. I think [Shire] Men would probably be too odd, personally. Even more odd than [Gandalf] Hobbits. :P
Best regards,
Dáin

They're men that live within the boundaries of the Shire, what's so odd about that? Personally I hated the way D shoved all the 'miscellaneous' freeps into the [Gandalf] culture.  >:(

I agree with you, GT. Ents should have got their own culture.

I'm going to continue rolling this Bree business around in my head for a little while, because for now I'm busy working on this new [Dwarven] subculture...   :x
