Buying a house!
« on: April 23, 2009, 10:12:23 AM »
"They" say that moving is one of the most stressful events in life. I always thought to myself, "What's the big deal? Sure, it's a lot of work, but you're mostly just throwing your junk into a truck and then unpacking it in a new spot..." In fact, I like to organize boxes. What I've never had to do before is buy a house or (even worse) sell a house.

So the last couple months have been a flurry of busyness. Working with lenders, contractors, realtors, the county... financing, permits, fees, estimates... paperwork, faxes, signatures, offers... :o

So I have some bad pet allergies, enough that I can't breathe if I go into a house that has had cats or dogs. Usually it takes me about an hour before I'm wheezing and slowly approaching the threshold of death. ;) This makes house shopping difficult, since the majority of houses have had a pet in them at some point. Vacuuming and steaming the carpets doesn't help all that much -- the dander is practically ingrained in the entire building. So for this reason (and a variety of others), we've been looking at manufactured homes (new means no dander!).

To make a long story short, after lots of headaches, we've finally found a place that we think we can afford! A small lot (only 1/5 acre) out of the city surrounded mostly by trees. Perhaps a dozen trees on the lot itself, and foresty land on the neighboring lots. Forest is my favorite type of land. :) The lot is completely undeveloped and would require major work to be able to put a house there, but... we think it can be done! We made a low offer on the property and -- get this -- they accepted without countering. $15k. 8-)

Now it's up to the county to see if they will give us septic approval. Let's hope! If all goes well, we'd probably be moving in during the summer, perhaps by June.

So do any of the rest of you have experience going through this process?

Ah ok, but very cool indeed.  This is our first house; very exciting and frightening at the same time!

200K does seem a bit steep... what size of a house are you going for?

Well, if we go with the new construction it will be 2000 sq ft. with an unfinished walk-out basement.  So something we could stay in a long time.  pretty much best deal for what we're looking for if we want to stay in Twinkiesburg.

But man.. we want to put 20% down.. 40k is a LOT of money.  :/

Forest is my favorite type of land. :)

What are you talking about? Every excentric millionaire and every Magic player know that ISLANDS rule! ;)
I like house-shopping a lot, but house-SELLING is a pain. We've been trying to sell our house for a year now. Of course, it IS a difficult-to-sell house due to the number of bedrooms in it, but still, it's not possible there are no more big families around!

Right....

When you become a corrupt Brazilian judge, F_M, you can buy Kralik a private island.

Congrats Kralik. I'm jealous. I'm trying to get enough money coming in from my job to get an apartment of my own and move out of this messed-up family. Hopefully I'll have enough together to get out of here by 18.
