Magic 2010
« on: June 24, 2009, 03:06:11 AM »
I thought I might bring up a discussion about the upcoming Magic 2010, just in case more than 2 people read this and have opinions.

Wizards has just released a(n obviously not finished) visual spoiler and the details of the rules change can be found here.

The poll is about the rules change, but what do we think about the cards as well, both the old and new ones?

I hate what happened to the combat phase. But to be honest, I'm pretty happy about the rest, seeing "cast" again makes me smile!

But it is a bit weird for combat damage to use the stack when other damage does not.

In a sense. But other damage DOES use the stack, however, since it's done in form of a spell of ability, its use is slightly different. Uses the stack, nonetheless. Don't get me wrong, I think it makes NO SENSE AT ALL for combat damage to use the stack, but it was a way to explore the concept and allow for nice interactions and clever decision-making. Their basically "dumbing down" the game by removing this, which is why I don't like it. Not for the flavor of it.

Yeah, that really stinks. Mogg Fanatic just got useless. Or a lot worse....

Oh wait. I hated Mogg Fanatic.

HUZZAH! Mogg Fanatic just got worse? :P

I liked damage using the stack. I really did.

Yeah, I did too, but I think the game will be perfectly fine without it. And it does make it easier to teach it to new people - dumbing down to get more people into the game seems fairly worthwhile to me.

What do we think about any of the spoilered cards? Such as the return of Lightning Bolt, new dual lands, mono-black lifelink and such things?

The lifelink makes sense, draining life has always been black anyway (see, well, Drain Life). I love how Bolt is coming back, it's an iconic spell and I sincerely think it IS fine in the current meta, when you can open on Land, Birds of Paradise and follow it up with the likes of Wooly Thoctar or Doran, the Siege Tower. I'm sincerely disappointed at the new duals. With them removing manaburning from the game, I kinda hoped the new lands would be just like painlands, except without the pain (and obviously the colorless-adding ability), I don't like CIP tapped lands, and I don't like how they are only aligned-colored. Even though, I AM liking what I see on M10 so far, I just hope Loxodon Warhammer comes back, as well as the man-lands and Wrath of God. I actually think, though, that with the new policy on Core Sets, it IS pretty possible they sit out WoG to see a metagame without it for a while, eventually returning it in M11.

I've been hearing people suspecting that Damnation might get in over Wrath, given that black is supposed to be the best colour at killing creatures.

That'd be awesome, I'd have my deck for Natz all set. Either UB Faeries or BGr Rack.

Well, I don't really like that they're "reprinting" a BUNCH of stuff in a Core Set with new names, like Nantuko Husk, Remove Soul, etc. I don't like it at all, I think it kinda defeats the whole purpose of Core Sets to the more Seasoned players. I do like what I see, though, overall. Great card quality. Triple-drafting M10 is gonna be loads of fun, from what I can see. As for lords, the Goblin one has got me tingling, after all, CAN you picture following him up with Siege-Gang Commander?

They have done this before, like Grizzly Bear --> Cylian Elves, and you've got to admit that Vampire Rogue is so much cooler than Zombie Insect. But I see what you mean.

Goblin Chieftain is nuts, so is Kalonian Behemoth (I can't wait to put him into my Mayael's Aria deck - either your opponent plays Wrath, or you get yourself some 10 life! :hey:) I also quite like the Zombie Lord.

I miss a good board sweeper. Other than that, yay for aggro on aggro matchups, let's mess that combat phase up!

Opened 3 packs today.

Honor of the Pure
Siege-Gang Commander
Clone

Could have been worse (Hive Mind, Mirror of Fate or Manabarbs). Honor of the pure is going directly to my WW. Siege-Gang Commander, hmmm, MAYBE I build some kind of Goblin deck, if I get better cards. Clone, well, never played Blue, probably going to trade it away. Sadly, it's useless, so no one will trade it from me.
