On the Status of minions if the fellowship moves again
« on: September 05, 2009, 06:53:20 PM »
Hey Guys,
im in college now...and found out that some other guys play here.
Cool i know.

But I have a rules question.

At the end of the fellowship players turn, if he decides to move again, what happens to the minions?

i always played that they just sorta hang around until the next site, but the guys here think you either A.) haev to discard them, or B.) Pay their twilight again.

I have looked at the rulebook..and honestly can't tell who is right.

Your help is appreciated.!

The minions definitely stay on table without any requirements.

The "regroup phase" entry in the rulebook should pretty much cover it:

Quote from: regroup phase
During the regroup phase, players may perform regroup actions (special abilities on cards in play with "Regroup:" and events with that keyword) using the action procedure.
When all players consecutively pass, each Shadow player must reconcile his hand.
Then, at the end of the regroup phase, if you are the Free Peoples player, you must select one of the following two choices:
• Moving your fellowship to the next site, subject to the move limit, and returning to the Shadow phase(S).
• Or, reconciling your hand. Then the Shadow players discard all minions in play (and cards borne by them), and your turn ends.
Discarding all the minions in play only applies when the FP player chooses not to move again. Not sure at what section they're getting that the twilight cost is paid again, but that also doesn't happen.

so are the minions just sorta in the twilight zone?
basically we are just trying to figure out what is happening with the minions between regroup and the next shadow phase, if nothing else...where they are physically.
thanks!

You could call it that. Basically, after the skirmish phase, any left over minions remain in play. You don't move them to your support area, or some other pile...they just stay out there. Antagonizing the fellowship, if you will.

If the free people's player chooses to move again, then the fellowship phase is skipped and you jump straight to shadow phase. You can play more minions, etc., and antagonize the fellowship even more.

The minions are discarded if the free peoples player chooses to end his or her turn and reconcile his or her hand.

They are chasing after the fellowship, of course! And if the fellowship decides to camp for the night, well, then... they... umm... lose interest. The joy is in the hunt, after all. Ambushing them while they are roasting marshmallows is no fun.

If the minions are roaming, at some point during the following shadow phase, their roaming penalties must be paid again, or they are discarded.  That's what you get for being homesick.

Incorrect. Roaming is only ever paid once..When they are first played.

But I am unsure if you are kidding with this post..?

The wording goes:

Quote from: roaming
Each minion is normally played to a certain range of sites beginning with the minion's site number. If the minion is played to (or is currently at) a site that has a lower site number, that minion is roaming. The player must pay a roaming penalty by removing an additional two twilight tokens when playing that minion.
So it does use "currently at", but that's in reference to a minion being roaming; the roaming penalty applies only when playing that minion.

Man, I'm no ultra-expert but with these basic-game questions unclear, you sure were playing a different game! it should be interesting starting to play the game all over again. It would feel like a new game!!
Cool, huh?
I guess you can start playing with Sauron minions now, since it must have been painful to play them with that "roaming rule"
My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that i'm right...

actually, when I first started playing the game I played it correctly. A fellow gamer, who played at a gamecon, convinced me otherwise about a year ago.  If I ever stopped and thought about that "rule" i would have realized that the sauron minions in 10, like the advanced scout, would have been impossible to use.  For some reason 2 and 2 never connected.
