Strongest Possible Companion?
« on: December 07, 2009, 08:48:42 PM »
Okay, what is the toughest companion you can get, with an empty hand and only himself and the ringbearer in the fellowship? Post strength, vitality, and damage bonuses.

I  think this goes to Durin III at Fords of Isen with:

Heavy Axe, +5
Belt of Erebor, + 2
Horn of Helm, +2
Book of Mazarbul, +2
Hand Axe, +3
Ring of Artifice with 19 artifacts in the discard pile, Damage +1 and Strength +18
Dwarven Bracer, +3
Still Twitching x4, +12
Endurance of Dwarves x4, +4, Vitality +4
Proud and Able, Damage + 9
Arod, +2
Elven Cloak, +2
Elven Brooch, +2
Every Possible Follower +22
Dwarven Embassy x4, Damage +4
Lord of Moria x4, Damage +4

Final Count: Strength 90, Damage plus 18, Vitality 8

Oops, did I just overwhelmyour balrog? Sorry about that. Didn't even realize he was there :)

For fun IRL, add events, Legolas, EC, and/or Gandalf, LotC and other token based conditions. Anything I'm missing?

you can have 4x still twitching for a total of +12, bumps your str up to 43.
There was a way to get uri up to something like 120, but it involves exhausting him so would be only a 1 turn thing.
No one loves you like I do.

Cool! My friend uses that strategy. I think it involves Honed.

Here's my second best:

Theoden at Fords of Bruinen with:
Horse of Rohan +1
Herugrim +3, Vitality +1
Rohirrim Javelin, +2
Hearken to me +3, Vitality +1
Coif +1, Vitality +1
Rohirrim Helm +1,
Erkenbrand's Shield, +1
Brought Down From Inside, +12

31, Vitality 6, Damage +1

OR

Eomer at Fords of Bruinen with:
Horse of Rohan +3
Rohirrim Sword +3,
Rohirrim Javelin, +2
Brought Down From Inside x4, +12
Coif +1, Vitality +1
Rohirrim Helm +1,
Erkenbrand's Shield, +1

30, Vitality 4 (There is a weapon that make bearer damage +1 while mounted, I just can't find it.)

I said without a hand, so no events. But that is a good one!

I would think that the Tales Pippin would be a better choice than Merry, From O'er the Brandywine!

Meanwhile, back at the Justice League Headquarters, Frodo is caught fighting 17 [Moria] Orcs. Oops! Did I just overwhelm your strength 4 Ring-Bearer? Didn't even realize he was there!

Strange Format for Durin - in your case, you should decide to take elvencards as elven brooch and elven cloak too. What about Arod?

Choose to transfer Pallando, Uruviel, Woodhall Elf, Stable Masters....

Well, I don't actually want to go through the entire process to figure out just how huge you could make your Frodo, but I'll go ahead and list some of the cards involved.  (Also, I'm assuming all cards are fair game, as you didn't specify a format.)

Oh, and... this wouldn't be a permanent strength boost for my companion, just a temporary thing.  So, maybe this doesn't count at all and you should just stop reading now.  =P

For my Ring-bearer, I'd go with Frodo, Weary from the Journey with the Ring of Doom.  I'm assuming he's skirmishing a non-Hunter minion of strength 8 or less.  =P

His partner in crime will be Merry, Friend to Sam.

Merry will have Escape, Frodo Gamgee, and Little Golden Flower for +vitality.  There will be 4 Everyone Knows in play.  We'll also have Southfarthing Leaf and every bit of pipeweed you can imagine.

And, of course, There and Back Again and 4 Long Live the Halflings/Don't Let Go.

The big thing is the 4 Shire Countrysides and the Frodo's Cloak.  This allows you to heal Merry 4 times, getting two extra sets of exertions out of him.

Basically, use a bunch of crap to boost Merry as high as you can (heck, even toss in some Goldberry exertions!), then exert him to add his strength to Frodo multiple times.  You should be able to add his strength 8 times just with the cards I listed, and I imagine there are even more permanents that will allow you to heal him or remove a burden during the skirmish phase.  Oh, and don't forget 4 copies of Sudden Fury, assuming they call came into play at site 1 and there were ridiculous amounts of skirmishes being fought at each site (even "extra" fierce skirmishes, like with Return to its Master and/or The Witch-king's Beast).  Use all of this stuff to pump Merry, then multiply that by 8 and add it to Frodo.  =P

But, once again, that's not a PERMANENTLY large companion, like Durin in the opening example.

Yeah, but Alazzar, you have serious issues :-p. You need an ent, so you can at least add Ent draught to the party. But!....there is a but. If you exert Merry, he will lose some vitality and thus lose strength from Everyone Knows.... But other than that...cool :-) Boromir, Son of Denethor is good too, maybe Gandalf with Strength of Spirit so you would be able to not exert the comps....

Well, this could be a topic on it self....what would be a 'realistic' strenght Frodo could have in open format :-)

I never mentioned Ent Draught!  And even so, couldn't we assume that an Ent was in play earlier?  Or, at the very least, we could use one of the ally-versions of Treebeard.  =P

And, yes, exerting will cause Merry to lose SOME of the strength from Everyone Knows, but not all of it.  The fact of the matter is, you can still make him huge, and then you get to multiply his strength by EIGHT and add it to the ring-bearer's.  =P

Boromir SoD would work if we were allowed to have three companions, but the scenario was proposed as just a ring-bearer and a companion.  And Strength of Spirit wouldn't work because we were told that we have no cards in hand!

But, yeah... Merry can provide huge boosts.  I actually have a screenshot that someone sent me from the LotR Online game long time ago where Pippin has something like 400+ strength.  That in itself is awesome, but the even better part was the opponent's reaction in the chat log:

"wait what"

a 400+ str Pippin, that would be something I want to see :-).

This is a great deck that kinda works with the principle:

I love it

Pff, Whatever. Frodo is overrated anyway.

I did make a strength 140 Gothmog... but he was against a strength 120 Pippin. One wound for all that effort.
