Draft Tournament
« on: December 14, 2009, 10:39:55 AM »
Okay, so how possible is it to have a 4 person draft tournament with only giving each person 3 draft packs? I have my eyes set on a draft tournament, but I don't want to spend > 60$ on it. I was hoping to buy 12 draft packs for 25 dollars... would 3 draft packs a piece make it unbalanced (as in, all minions and no shadow events or conditions)? Are the 2, 29 card draft packs no replacement for the 3, 11 card booster packs?

It would probably work. However, Draft packs are going to be very repetitive. Having opened many myself the benefit of Draft packs is that you get very solid sets of minions/companions and possessions but get hardly any events and conditions. Are they towers or fellowship?

Plus $25 for a FOTR Draft box seems high, Hill's has FOTR Fraft boxes for $9, but no TTT.

I can get either for about $20. Which would you recommend for this?

Thank you so much for the help! I love the idea of draft tournaments, but have never been able to play one :)

For a Draft Tournament, you usually use a Draft Pack and 3 booster packs (from the same block, of course).  Everyone gets their own Draft Pack and keeps all the cards inside, then each person opens one of their boosters, takes a card, and passes the rest of the pack to their left.  They continue taking a card and passing until that pack is exhausted, then they open the next pack and repeat the process, but this time passing right instead of left.

And you're right to love the idea of draft play, because drafts are awesome.  =P

At wholesale gaming site, could someone explain to me the difference between a "36 booster pack lot" for the Fellowship and a "Fellowship Booster Box"?

The box is a sealed booster box, obviously. However, the difference with the 36 pack lot is that there is no box. It is 36 packs that they have gathered up from various other places. The packs may have come from damaged or opened product like another booster box, an anthology, or the deluxe starters.

Another reason for the lower price on the lot is that the packs are even more random, this may or may not be good. In a booster box you usually don't get doubles of rares (or very few) because they line the rares up in a somewhat particular order. With a pack lot you don't get the officially sorted packs in the run they were printed with. So the odds may be in your favor of getting a lot of great rares in a focused batch, or the reverse of getting lots of doubles of crappy rares.

Back in the day of SWCCG, people could predict which rares were in a box based on opening a few packs in a certain order and the serial number on the bottom. The packs were arranged in a fairly predictable way and people would look for boxes with successive serial numbers in order to increase the chances of getting a more complete set. I don't know if this worked with LOTR.

Personally, I'd probably try the random lot first to see how it turns out since I could care less about the box itself and would be willing to pay less for a chance at more concentrated power rares. Just don't get to upset if the gamble doesn't pay off.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, I'm buying them for a booster tournament with my siblings, so it should work fine. Thanks for the info, I like knowing what I'm buying exactly. Thanks again!

Really? I though you passed around the draft packs as well.

Nope, never pass the draft pack.  The whole purpose of the draft pack is to give you a foundation on which to build your deck.  You'll get a handful of companions and a bunch of minions that usually only come from 1-2 shadow cultures.

Just make sure everyone takes a few minutes to look at their Draft Pack before you start passing boosters, so that people can start to plan out what they're looking for (i.e., figure out what kind of Shadow cultures they want to draft, figure out how many more companions they need, etc.).

I actually wrote a series of Fellowship draft articles for the DGMA website several years ago, but I'm pretty sure the DGMA site isn't working or it's virus-ridden or something.  Anyway, I wrote another article for the LotR Online game, which you may or may not find useful:

You wrote that article? That is what initially got me interested in draft tournaments! Great job, it's a great article, and very helpful. Thanks!

Oh say, do you know if there a place I can find the official rules for drafts? I have found them before, but I can't seem to find them now.

Had a great time! We screwed up on passing the packs, nothing too bad, but some players got 1 card more or less than others. They were heartbroken over losing a third Summit of Amon Hen... We got like 20 total. But overall, very good! We actually had 2 Isidur's Bane's drafted as the random rares in the draft pack. It was awesome. We also pulled 2x Tale of Mr. Underhill and 2x Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
