Some Assembly Required
« on: January 16, 2010, 01:31:57 PM »
I hope that this topic's in the right board; it might have fit into Bag End as well, but I figure the mods can move it if it's in the wrong place.

Well, a bit of background, and then my request.  I'm a fan of the LotR-TCG and have played for prolly...oh, since Mines of Moria was released, I think.  I started by purchasing the very last Gandalf starter deck for FotR at my local NEx (my dad was in the navy and stationed on Okinawa, Japan, at the time) and was highly intrigued by the concepts of the game, the most interesting to me that you could have several people play at once.  Time went on, my dad transfered to Washington state, bremerton area and I got two of my friends into the game, where we began to have nearly weekly contests.  Another transfer came around the release of RotK, and after that, I wasn't able to find anyone (besides my brother, and I hate his stupid Dwarf Tank / Moria Swarm decks) to play with.  After living here (DFW area, Texas) for a year, I went on a mission to Tonga, in the south pacific for two years, and now I've been back since about october.  I was sad to find out that the lotrtcg.fanhq.com site was dead, and that I could no longer get the "official" card lists and so on...but much to my delight discovered this site.

Now, the point of my coming is less to find people to play with IRL (although I would not be against it should the opprotunity make itself manifest!), but because I've got a little project cooking that I'd like to finish.  I'm a game programmer (or want to be), conversant in C++, familiar with 3DSMax and learning Lua, among other things.  So, I decided, since I needed a little practice making a scripting-based game model, figured that the LotR-TCG would be the best option available to me.  I know that other net-based programs are out there, but they don't seem to do much besides implement the basic system, and then leave the moves up to the players, such as twilight transfers and so on (correct me if I'm wrong, though, I base that knowledge on hearsay and the occasional screenshot).  I've begun to design an internal model for representing individual cards, and, eventually, hope to be able to script every single card...daunting, yes, but if implemented properly, powerful.  I also am designing a 3D interface, to have a different "feel" than the boxed-in 2D ones I've seen.

Anyhoo, I already had most of the card images (except for Treachery and Deceit, and thus my searching that lead to this site), but now I'm trying to find scans of the latest manuals and so on...I have the august 2007 comprehensive guide, and the equivalent X-List, but I've only got up the Black Riders standard manual, as well as several physical manuals, of course.  I managed to get a list of the starter decks from Gondorian.com, but I'm certain I'm missing a chunk of game rules and other official resources...for instance, I cannot find any explanation for "reinforcing" a token in any of the official docs I've got.  I could probably find an impromptu tutorial somewhere, but I'm hoping for a version taken from The Rules, if you know what I mean.

so, I guess I'm just wondering if there is a be-all, end-all place that these sorts of things have been stored...I could easily have missed something somewhere, but for now I'm kept in the dark.

In case I'm not clear, I don't expect to take the fan world by storm...but, hey, you never know.  I just want to have some experience game scripting, and any help on the rules-side of things would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

teltura

Hey teltura

We have a fully functional game in GCCG. The Archives of Minas Tirith contains all the rules documents, including the Current Ruling Document and the Comprehensive Rules.

About your mission, you dont happen to be LDS do you?

I know about GCCG, and my point wasn't to come in and offer an alternative, my point is I need to do SOMEthing to get good at scripting, and I figured this is it.

and thanks!  I found that thread as I was snooping around, it's being a pain to download for some reason, but I'll compare them with what I've got and see if it's what I'm looking for.  thanks!

...and, yesh, I am LDS.  Not too many other people I know that go on two-year missions, eh?

Nice, I served in Peru. I know of at least 2 other RMs on here too.
Welcome. Thanks for sharing your story! Good luck with the project.

Reinforcing is just putting an additional culture token on a card that has them. Such as Garrison of Osgiliath.

I served in Costa Rica.  I didn't know Jord was LDS.  That's great.  Good luck TelTura
