Teaching new player - what sets (block)?
« on: January 29, 2010, 03:17:39 PM »
Hi :)

I have played LOTR TCG in the past and would like to play it again. I have a son that really likes LOTR movies and want to learn the game. There I have a chance to play it again...from there I think my wife and maybe my daughter as well, we will see...

So where to start. Any advice?

I have thought about buying one each of the starter boxes for Shadows, Black Rider and Bloodlines and booster boxes as well, a some of each. Are these sets any good? A nice/good introduction to the game? Or should I go with something else? Other blocks/sets to start with? What would you do? Many thanks for all advice!

I'd start with Fship block -- either FotR starter is good, and then a few packs from all three.

Otherwise, Shadows starters with packs of those latter two are good, though maybe a little complex.

Thanks! :) More easy to learn with the first three sets...I know them pretty well also. As for the Shadows block it could be to complex and thus causing some problems. Should wait with that? Other opinions? Just saw that Shadows block is not to expensive...

Thank you for the link! That would have been great...I live in Europe, and I think they only send within USA?

Yep, the Fellowship Block is a good way to start. The cards are rather simple, and they are full of flavour as well. Once you are having fun with Fellowship Block, you can try moving on slowly to other sets and one by one include them in. Have fun with LotR: TCG!

I do it the other way round. A friend and I started with the Hunters and RoS starters and add to our decks as we collect Hunters Block. We played the movie block starters once or twice, too, and TTT block was the fun. But somehow Hunters Block is the most interesting. The Shadow cultures are just awesome!

I wouldn't recommend starting with Hunters block as the price of these cards is very high and they are hard to obtain. Alot of cards have errata, and there is little in the way of rules support for when you get stuck. It is true that there are alot of powerful cards in this block however.

I'd go with FOTR block - at the moment the out of print RotEL set 3 can be purchased as a whole set on Ebay for a reasonable price. So access is pretty easy, and it is a cheaper option. This format has been played extensively, it has been shown to be balanced, and there are little problems with rules. It's also a fun format!

Yep agreed! Plus, if you don't feel like spending any cash, you can always get the free resources on this forum!

Free printable starter decks, starter kits, posters..doesn't get any better than that does it? :D
