Let Us Debate
« on: July 01, 2008, 06:41:30 AM »
You know what we haven't done on this forum yet? Had a good old fashioned CC debate. I'm gunna go ahead and choose a subject. Iran.

What is to be done about Iran. They are definately a danger. With a leader as fanatical and dangerous as Armawhooseewhatsit or whatever his name is we cannot afford to let them have a Nuclear weapon. Now Israel are threatening military action against them. However any action taken by Israel against Iran without the western powers would most likely end in disaster. We nearly had a major war in the middle east over lebanon, if they launched a full attack against Iran it would be a total disaster, other Arab nations would surely side with iran and surely WWIII would follow. America doesn't have the capability to fight another war in the middle east now even if it wants to and there would huge opposition her in England to that idea. NATo would probably come Israel's aid if Iran attacked first but would be very unlikely to support a first strike. So it seems that we have no choice but to continue trying with diplomatic means even if they don't seem to be working. Heck it worked with North Korea.  What are your thoughts?

For now--and it pains me to even say it--I agree, overall. We're stretched a little thin at the moment, so for the time being, at least, I think we need to try to watch Iran like a hawk, but hold OUR birds of prey in check. We have to make it clear to Iran in those talks, however, that we can and will unleash hellfire and brimstone on them if they don't back down, though. Diplomacy without power and resolve behind it is worthless.
Best regards,
Dáin

I'm more or less ignorant to the specifics of this situation (and, as such, educating me will likely alter my opinion), but I am of the belief that we pretty much have little to no reason for attacking Iran, outside of the administration's want for oil control through dominating the middle east.

Has Iran attacked us? Have they done anything to directly attack our freedom? No. I think it's their right to develop technology as they want to. We have nukes, so they should be allowed nukes too.

The US could easily fight a war with Iran, pending said war was executed correctly and we got out quickly. Heck, Israel could do it for us (and probably with better results). There's no country in the middle east with the strength or muster to launch an attack on Israel; we threw enough money into Israel to make it into a mini USA.

The USA hasn't said that it wants to commit genocide though. The President of Iran has made it quite clear that he would like nothing better than to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.

Thats the thing though any invasion would have to end in an occupation. You couldn't just sweep through and then leave. That would result in a lawless and broken nation. Israel could not do it on there own as the such a move would likely unify all the country's around them into a unified opposition. Sure no single one of the states around israel is a threat but three or even just two are. Not to mention that a large chunk of palestinians would rise against them as well. No Israel needs the west if it wants to do anything but at the moment the west either doesn't want to or can't.

They have not directly attacked us, but they have been supplying the terrorists in Iraq.

True. Also, Achmedinijad (spelled wrong, but that's how it's pronounced... I think) has openly declared that he expects something along the lines of The Last Prophet to appear in Iran, soon, and strongly insinuated that he intends to lead Iran and the Islamic world in a Jihad war of civilization, Islam vs. the West vs. the East (ie, China, russia, etc.) in some kinda Ragnarok/Armageddon.

I don't know much about Islamic Doomsday doctrines, so I dunno how much of the whole Final Prophet thing is just that particular sect of Islam, or what. But he made a pretty alarming speech awhile back that wasn't really publicized much in the US.

Also, I'm fine with Iran developing technology. But not developing military technology that could be a substantial threat. Heck, at this point, I don't really want anyone else developing weaponry on that sorta level, because it throws the whole Balance of Power into chaos.

Yeah. My semi-random thoughts for the moment. I'm sure I have more, but I'm losing my attention span. :P
Forget it. I'm not arguing with the computer anymore to try to get the sig I want....
