3 Questions, Mostly About Ability Timing
« on: March 29, 2010, 10:49:11 PM »
Sorry for borrowing some MtG terms, but is the target of an ability declared when it is announced, or when it resolves?

Example:

Enquea, LoM is in play with 2 wounds.  I have 6 companions, one of which is Merry with 2 wounds.  I have unheeded in my hand.  When Enquea exerts, what happens?

1) It exerts, wounds a companion, and then I kill it with unheeded if he didn't hit Merry.
2) It exerts, he chooses a companion, and if he didn't choose Merry I can safely exert him to kill Enquea.
3) It exerts, I exert merry and kill him, and now he can choose to hit any companion (likely Merry).

I assume case 3 is correct, but I was not sure.

Second question: Do things that respond to costs of an ability trigger immediately, or when the ability is done?

Example: Merry has an escape, and is fighting an [Orc] minion.  There is a demoralized in play, and there is no twilight.  When Merry exerts, is the twilight added in time for the minion to cancel the ability?

Example two:  Boromir exerts as a cost for Defend it and Hope while Stewards' Legacy is in play.  Is the minion exerted, then wounded, or wounded, then exerted?

Third question:  What happens to cards like Saruman's Snows when the current site is changed because of Traveled Leader?

Thankyou.

First: I would say yes, number 3 is the case
Second: the cost can be immediately used for the shadow player's end. In the case of Boromir, yeas, you kill. You start to exert, then Steward's Legacy activates and then the wound is placed.
Third: I don't know, interesting case :)

The second question answers the first: Responses to costs come before effects.

So in your Enquea situation, it goes as follows:
1. Shadow player spots 6 companions.
2. Shadow player exerts Enquea.
2A. Free Peoples player responds by playing Unheeded, as follows:
2A1. Free Peoples player checks to see that Enquea exerted.
2A2. Free Peoples player plays Unheeded and exerts Merry.
2A3. Free Peoples player wounds Enquea, killing him.

3. Shadow player wounds a companion.

In other words, your option 3) is correct.

In response to your third question, I would presume Saruman's Snows is discarded when the site it's on leaves play (I see nothing in the cards that would transfer it to a new site).

For the third question, cards played on or stacked on the current site will shift to the new site.

Re:#3 EA is correct
From the CR:
"Some cards allow a player to play the next site on the adventure path at times when the fellowship is not moving. These may be used even when the next site is already there. In such cases, the new site replaces the old one; put the old site back in its owner's adventure deck. The new site takes the same site number the old site had, so that there is always only one site 1 in play, one site 2, and so on. When a site is replaced, all cards played on or stacked on the old site are moved to the new site."
