Underrated Movie Block cards/combos
« on: July 13, 2010, 11:44:39 AM »
So we all know what Movie block cards get high ratings and inclusion into most decks (Ulaire Enquea, LoM, Saved from the Fire, elven bows, most corsairs, etc.)--what I'm interested in is the lesser known ones--the hidden gems of Movie block, if you will.
What cards/combos do you consider to be most underrated?

I'd say Derufin is a pretty underated card. It is very splashable in any deck that lacks possession removal.

Most of those are used reasonably frequently. I'd say one of the most under-valued cards is Feild of the Fallen. Fires raged unchecked is another, as well as Ghastly host.

Sam, Son of Hamfast
Smeagol, Poor Creature
Fireworks
Gollum, Stinker
Captured By the Ring
Goblin Runner
Grishnakh, Orc Captain
Red Wrath or Whirling Strike
A Light In His Mind
Brooding On Tomorrow

Those guys come to mind off the top of my head.
-wtk

None of those are really underrated, they're raw power and everyone knows its. XD

I used Fires Raged Unchecked as an IB tech in one of my extended decks once. It was nice.

I'd have to say the most underrated is Not The First Halfling. I've run token reinforcement on that card. Its awesome.

one of my favorite cards.  One of my most favorite decks is a frodo sig 9 walkers FOTR block deck.

But Fires Raged Unchecked requires threats, those orcs remove the threats.. I don't think Fires Raged Unchecked is underrated, just not good.

I am finding myself liking On Your Doorstep more and more for any deck with Gandy--not sure how underrated it is
I think A Path Appointed is quite useful for its purposes--I use one in a token-based fellowship after discovering it recently.
Derufin is a great splash--possibly underrated. He absoutely destroys tough machine uruk/berserkers.
I agree with jdizzy001 that Aragorn signets are great--definitely an underrated element (as well as Frodo sigs---however everybody knows TMAYOD with Gandy sigs)
and sorry ket but your list definitely has power cards everybody is familiar with---Sam, SoH as underrated? really? lol

Melilot Brandybuck is a pretty underated card. Played with Frodo, OBH, it is as good as Sam, SOH.

Veteran Horseman and Elfhelm. Well, I guess they are not that underrated, but I like them. Made 2 fun decks around them. Having 9 mounted comps (4 of which are Veteran Horseman) is quite fun or having Elfhelm with Strong Arms and Thundering Host. As far as I've seen on GCCG, I'm the only one to use them and indeed, it's not easy to make a competitive deck with them (although my Veteran Horseman deck is quite good) but it's fun to play them. I love the imagined look on my opponent's face when I get my Veteran Horseman to amazing strengths. I've just realized that they could make a very good deck in Standard format (with Haleth and Theoden, Ednew).  ;D

Elrond, Keeper of Vilya

I've seen only jmccarthy and myself play him and while Elrond, Herald to Gil Galad is by far a better choice as a splash healer/condition remover (with Vilya), Elrond, KoV is much better in "elf only" decks. Saved me many times.

New Errand can be used if you have Isildur or Boromir as your alternate RB and can be nice even if you don't care about Site Numbers.

That's great!--burden removal that fits with any deck that needs it dearly (Rohan comes to mind) without taking up a companion spot like Sam, SoH!
My Elfhelm and Grimbold Marshals of Rohan deck while fun to play (as mentioned by hrcho) just lost (barely) to an all out burden deck---here's my fix!

The good news about that is that using Frodo, OBH allows you to add other allies if you want.

Banner of Westernesse - I favor this in knight decks over strength-boosting hand weapons. Usually minions are killed by vitality reducers and wounding, or Fifth Level does the job. That leaves the Banner to heal and prepare the knights for the next batch of minions.

Mithril Shaft (+ Ring of Guile) - There's a joke that pulling this card in a pack means you've been shafted... but it's something of a pet card. If you can accept your deck disappearing before your eyes (not as bad as Ever My Heart Rises though), the Shaft can get whatever's needed to set up combos and the like. Link it to Ring of Guile for extra mileage.

Southron Archer Legion - At first he seemed like an overpriced minion, but now I like to splash him in my Moria archery decks. When cards in hand are spent as resources (They Are Coming), it's pretty good when just one card can net 5 points of archery--and with [Moria] the twilight isn't as big a deal. Not to mention he's a 4-vitality sink, and if he reaches a skirmish, 13 strength might squeeze in another wound.

Incidentally, I've heard that knight decks shouldn't use City Wall... anyone know the reason for this? (Personally I can never find room for it, and I like Fifth Level more, but maybe there's something else.)

Aye, a great card, I go with it in my Ranger wounding deck along with Citadel of Minas Tirith. In knight and ranger wounding decks, skirmishes are rarely lost and healing is massive.

One other card I use in my deck: Ithilien Trap - not as good as Merry's Sword, but saved my #$&*@! more then once.

Base of Mindolluin is a pretty underated card. It is a very good site 3 to use if you have any Gondor or 2 Rohan companions in your deck. Garrison of Osgiliath, Arrow-slits, City Wall, Citadel of the Stars... I usually like to put 3 fortification in my deck allong-side Base of Mindolluin in case I draw one before site #3. This site isn't only for Knights.

Okay, here it is, the most underused combo of all time.  i have been mocked for using it in the past.  It actually works best in fotr format, because the raider culture didn't exist yet, I like this combo because I found it without any help from anyone.  It is my own, my precious, but enough talk.  Legolas, Prince of Mirkwood and Long-knives of Legolas (3R21).  Why is this good?  With this combo Legolas receives a skirmish bonus against Nazzies, Orczees, and Uruk-haizees (The "only" minions in fotr block).  I know Greenleaf is "better" but if your building a skirmish deck, he is the way to go.

Flaming Brand is a much better solution vs Nazgul than Legolas.

the point isn't to use solely legolas, the point is to make legolas a usable fighter

Radagast. Most people know it's a good card but I consider it as a GREAT card. It can makes the difference between a win or a loss. Splashing one in any deck can be useful.

I still think I'd rather run Legolas, Greenleaf, and leave the fighting to Arwen, Daughter of Elrond and Aragorn and Boromir with the Flaming Brand.
-wtk

a very valid point, but if you're building a trust me deck, daughter of elrond won't help.  Plus i know how you feel about greenleaf.  he is a great card, extremely flexible and has the frodo sig, making him perfect for frodo's pipe.  However prince of mirkwood with long knives is a little known and never used combo, which is the purpose of this thread, to point out scarcely used combos

However prince of mirkwood with long knives is a little known and never used combo, which is the purpose of this thread, to point out scarcely used combos
It's not used because it's not that good. In a Trust me Deck, even if FOTR Block, all you need is 3 Gandalf Signet, Aragorn, RotN Gimli, SoG and Frodo, OBH. In other blocks, Legolas, EC is still better.

The Number Must Be Few, a very underrated card. However, it is the only way to stop Ents as Ulaire Enquea gets destroyed by Terrible and Evil and Greed is discarded easily. If you think that your shadow if potentially weak vs Ents or large fellowship, you should consider it.

exactly. My Tmayod/ Pipeweed Deck ( I think it's somewhere here on the FotR Block board) runs those 3 comps, Gandalf, FotS and Greenleaf. Works perfectly, as I can heal both Gandi and Greenleaf with Frodo's Pipe. But still, I think it's a very creative idea.

The number must be few... I really like the way the card is played. A  [Sauron] condition with no spotting requerements nor any other restrictions... I like it.

Haha. I'm quite late/new here. But I noticed that there is one card in particular missing from the list:

WE MUST GO WARILY - Almost laughable that it's a common!

And if someone already did mention this overpowered card, my bad- kudos to them! Just thought that it really needed to be on here.

Here are a few I can think of...

Hate And Anger
Naith Troop in telepathy decks
Helpless
Saruman's Snows

i've been seeing sarumans snows a lot recently, so i'm not sure its an underrated card, but hate and anger is a card you can build a deck around (which i did a couple weeks ago) but i have never seen anyone else play.
