A Big Tournament
« on: December 29, 2010, 08:12:26 PM »
Good day,

My name is James Booker and I am a former "Rider of Rohan" and Lord of the Rings TCG player.  After looking at my old cards and discovering some people are still interested in the game, I have taken it upon myself to host a large event.  Currently, I am gauging how many of you would be interested in attending such a tournament.

I intend to hold the event near Cleveland, Ohio.  Also, I can secure a large enough area for the event.

I plan on doing either a movie block tournament with a banned list or a Fellowship block tournament (though I am hesitant to ban cards in this format, but I am aware of some strong cards).

I'm looking to hold this event in February or March.  For prizes, I will donate my own cash to the prize pool and use the entry fees toward the  prize pool as well.  If people are opposed to a prize tournament, I can attempt to secure foils and other neat LOTR items.

If you could, please answer the following questions.

1. Would you attend a LOTR TCG tournament in Cleveland, Ohio in February/March?

2. Which format would you like the tournament to be? (Movie block, Fellowship block)

3.  Would you prefer cash prizes or LOTR TCG related prizes?

4.  Would you be comfortable with a $30 entry fee?

5.  What other suggestions do you have that would lend to the success of this event?

I look forward to your responses!

1. I might travel to Cleveland. I drive to Chicago, and Cleveland is only 50 miles more. But the event would have to be very sure. I don't want to spend a weekend for a 5 person tournament. If you don't have locals, it might be tough. Also, given winter weather, February is too chancy. Late March or April would be better.

2. Movie Block, with the posted banned list plus Galadriel, Lady Redeemed. While Corsairs are annoying, they're not head and shoulders above everything else. The problem with Fellowship Block is that there's no agreement on a banned list. Horn or Boromir - Keeper of Isengard is the best deck in the format, so you'd either have to defend a banned list or see little variety.

3. Cash, unless you've got Hunters block stuff.

4. I would be OK, but that's on the steep side.

5. Pick a decent location, one with passable tables, space, and a bathroom that's been cleaned in the last year.

1. No.  It's really hard to find a good location for a huge tournament like this as you have to find an area that most people can access easily.
2. I would go Movie Block.  Maybe have a few different tournaments?  One for Standard, Movie, and Casual and each person can pick which one they want cause I know a bunch of people would rather have casual
3....  Probably cash as it would help pay for the entry fee.
4. Yes but it would be nice if the entry fee was lower and it also depends whether there's going to be a decent sized tournament.  If there's gonna be 8 people then no.

1. I live in Iowa so Cleveland is a bit far.  I would love to go though, any chance you could aim for Chicago instead?  I could make that I think plus from reading on here I think there are still a decent number of players around Chicago.
2.  I would go Movie block and add Galadrieal, LR to the X-List.
3. Probably cash unless you have lots of Hunters block stuff to use.
4. I would be okay with it if the tournament had lots of people and good prize support.

Thanks for all your replies.

I am hosting the tournament in Cleveland because I live in Ohio.  If someone wants to take the initiative to run an event within the region, I would strongly consider attending the event.  I understand that it's not within an hour or two from many of you, and I don't expect all of you to drive to Ohio.  However, I would like to unify a player base and have people play LOTR again.

Still feel free to reply to original post and I hope some of you can make it.

I'm leaning towards late March and I should have a date announced soon.
