Don't Threaten Me/Ninja Gollum
« on: May 20, 2011, 09:30:47 PM »
Not sure if this has been posted before so forgive me if it has. I always wanted to use the companions that used threats to pump up so here is my attempt at it in Movie Block.

Bearer and Ring
*The One Ring, Answer To All Riddles (4R1)
*Gimli, Bearer of Grudges (RB)(9R+4)

Sites
(1R)Steps of Edoras (7U334)
(2R)West Road (7U337)
(3R)Hall of the Kings (7U339)
(4R)Pelennor Prarie (10U118)
(5R)Pelennor Flat (7U345)
(6R)Minas Tirith Third Circle (7U352)
(7R)Pelennor Grassland (7U354)
(8R)Northern Ithilien (7U359)
(9R)Slag Mounds (7U363)

Fellowship (35)
2x *Ring of Fury (9R+7)
1x *Aragorn, Driven by Need (7P364)
2x *Merry, Rohirrim Squire (7C320)
2x *Pippin, Sworn to Service (7C323)
1x *Smeagol, Always Helps (7R71)
2x *A Light in his Mind (10U108)
1x *Good Work (4U305)
2x Birthday Present (10R104)
3x Don't Look at Them (6R39)
4x The Shire Countryside (3R113)
4x Dagger Strike (7C84)
4x Nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom (10C112)
2x *Gimli's Battle Axe, Trusted Weapon (7R9)
1x Dwarven Bracers (2U3)
2x Hobbit Sword (1C299)
2x Knight's Spear (7C108)

Shadow (35)
1x *Fat One Wants It (7R57)
3x *Promise Keeping (8R24)
1x *Unabated in Malice (10U24)
2x Evil-smelling Fens (5U22)
1x Heavy Burden (7U60)
2x Hidden Even From Her (8C22)
4x They Stole It (6R46)
4x Captured by the Ring (7C53)
2x Nasty, Foul Hobbitses (6C42)
4x We Must Have It (5C30)
2x *Desert Lord (4R219)
1x *Gollum, Mad Thing (10R21)
1x *Gollum, Stinker (5R25)
3x *Shelob, Her Ladyship (10R23)
2x *Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul (1U231)
2x Web (8C30)

Basic idea is to assign Smeagol to the big minions to exhaust em the hit em with Don't look at Them, and add threats to pump and remove them with Nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring Doom to manage them for each companion's skirmish. I decided to give Aragorn, Driven By Need a Knight's Spear in case you use a Nine-Fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom you can add 3 more threats to maximize Aragorn's text and get an extra +3 . Most the time you wanna do Smeagol's Skirmish last so any wounds taken by other companions are healed when he dumps 3 cards to use Don't Look At Them to kill the minion off (losing initiative triggering The Shire Countryside to mass heal). I decide to run Gimli as my ring-bearer cause he is stronger than a Frodo and his set backs are easily managed with the free peoples, not to mention he can add threats to pump Aragorn and Pippin if needed. Dagger Strike is an obvious pump for this deck since you run [Gondor] and [Shire] companions with weapons. Birthday Present to keep those NFFatRoD coming and it adds a burden to assure you have 1 to remove when you need some healing. Another plus to running Dagger Strike is it can pump your [Shire] companions without keeping you from getting NFFatRoD back with Birthday Present.

Here is how your companions look if decked out correctly:

Gimli is power 11 with his axe (and two threats), Ring of Fury and the Dwarven Bracer (13 if you wear the ring)
Aragorn is power 15 with Knight Spear (adding 3 threats with it for a +3 pump after you wipe threats)
Smeagol can basically insta-kill whatever so no need to be a strength monster
Merry is strength 11 with a hobbit sword (and adding 3 threats if you again have none to start)
Pippin is strength 8 with a hobbit sword (and spotting 3 threats that are added by knight's spear or Merry)

Granted none are to impressive but if they aren't overwhelmed chances are they will get healed when Smeagol uses Don't Look At Them to lose initiative to remove a burden with A Light in His Mind and triggering The Shire Countryside . Use Aragorn in the regroup phase to peel 3 threats to set up your next turn or maybe even a double move.

Not sure what is to be said about the shadow except stack on burdens to make Gollum big, kill annoying companions with They Stole it. Use shelob to keep other companions from being assigned and use as a pincushion for archery decks. It adds burdens fairly fast and once you get 5 burdens hit em with a Ulaire Enquea to more than likely then the herd. Desert Lord can soften up a few companions for either They Stole it (if they foolishly assign that companion to Gollum) or Ulaire Enquea to get more than 1 companion in the maneuver phase .

Anyway let me know what you think and thanks for looking this deck over,

NK

If a Balrog falls from a bridge and noone is around, does it make a sound?

Maybe, maybe flip Gimli for Isildur and add Hardy Garrison for more killing power since aragorn has no damage bonus... But it looks good either way!

Gimli was their so if he fights it add threats and Aragorn and other things could remove them.

Not sure you have quite enough threat removal, add at least one Hearts Raised. This is more personal preference, but I'd drop the 4 dagger strike and one knights spear and add 4x everyone knows and 2x escape, then add 1 card to the shadow side. Gives your hobbits more permanent str, especially with the healing. Cool deck tho!
No one loves you like I do.

Old thread revival!

I'm playing with this deck right now on GEMP, and let me say...there's got to be a better way than starting Aragorn and Smeagol.

I am in my second game and have really shat the bed when drawing multiple copies of The Shire Countryside before even getting a single hobbit...

I do really love the concept though.

With so many [Shire] and [Shire] support cards, I'd say start with Merry/Pippin/Smeagol and pack 4x Aragorn. The extra Gorns will be more useful for healing as well.

I agree, you could then bid something start with Sam as well and suicide him when gorn comes along. Although I saw ket's game on gemp today and against those beseigers it's always going to be rough I imagine.

Switched some stuff out a little bit...

Frodo Ring-Bearer, starting Arwen, Fair Elf Maiden, Merry, Pippin, and Smeagol. All of the Dwarven stuff was ditched for Frodo stuff and multiple copies of Gorn-Bot.

Getting Aragorn at site one gives you six companions, but since only Arwen has three vitality, she's the only guaranteed Enquea kill and she's totally non-essential regardless.

Since switching up the fellowship, I've gone two-and-three [though I royally screwed myself in one of the games to my own doom]. Way better than the oh-and-three of the original deck.

Also, I've paired the free peoples with a Desert Lord tank shadow, just because I wanted to play with Mumak.
