2012 Olympic Games
« on: August 02, 2012, 09:03:29 AM »
Ok, so I just came across this on the web, and... WTF?

Since WHEN do the Standings take into consideration overall number of medals DESPITE the number of GOLD medals?

Ever since the Olympic Games have had the current configuration, Medal Standings are supposed to go from hardest to achieve medal to lowest, with overall having no effect whatsoever, so a country with 2 Gold Medals and nothing else is STILL ahead of a country with 35 medals, all silver/bronze (and this is, in fact, how the official Olympics website is tallying the Standings).

What gives?

EDIT: When I first looked, USA was in first place, with 31 medals, but China has gone over them again (luckily, I immortalized it here). Still, the question remains, why the #$&*@! is NBC counting OVERALL medals?

Different tables count different ways. The official olympic one i believe is http://www.london2012.com/medals/medal-count/
and goes by Golds > Silvers > Bronzes.

I saw the US Basketball match against Nigeria, and was just wow.

i always thought that a 3-2-1 system might be effective. like 3 points for a gold, 2 for silver etc. because honestly, 30 silvers is better than 1 gold.

could even go 5-3-1, but whatever. nobody asked me...

i hope the usa volly ball teams do well.

the usa mens gymnastics SUCKED!

What baffles me is the sudden change ever since China began fighting for the top spot, I mean, do people actually buy this? Anyway, I think these Olympics are not going very well for basically every "shark" (except China), and just a little too well for GB.
PS: Yes, the Nigeria game was awesome, it was like watching Bedazzled.
PPS: For the record, it also showed Brasil, with 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze, ahead of Khazakstan, with 4 golds. Borderline ludicrous.

I think it started last olympics when China had more Golds then the US but less overall medals.

i also think its only NBC. all our other medal counts are normal. and plus, it makes sense, the USA news is trying to highlight the positives for the USA audience. at least we can be grateful they aren't completely making stuff up...
